Water Cannons? Tear Gas?

“Flora” (Roman Goddess of Spring), Villa di Arianna 1st Century A.D.

[..] the rifleman’s stalking the sick and the lame
Preacherman seeks the same, who’ll get there first is uncertain
Nightsticks, water cannons, tear gas, padlocks
Molotov cocktails and rocks behind every curtain
False-hearted judges, dying in the webs that they spin
Only a matter of time ’til night comes steppin’ in

Bob Dylan, Jokerman

I’ve seen huge amounts of riot police in many cities this weekend, in Holland, Germany, UK, Sweden, Canada, Florida and money more places (Miami Beach declared a state of emergency), using water cannons, horses, dogs, in some cases tear gas, to disperse relatively small and peaceful crowds. These things are normally used in case of serious rioting. But now the “justification” is that people are standing and walking too close together, and not obeying the “measures” and restrictions.

But that is exactly what they’re protesting. If you protest the measures, and they say you can only do that if you comply with those same measures, which includes asking permission beforehand, that is not a protest, that is theater. And the right to protest is not something that can just arbitrarily be taken away in a democratic country. Until now. Until Covid came along.

Here’s a clip of 14 countries with protests. They don’t include the water cannons etc. footage, which is fine by me.

Almost all countries have rising numbers of Covid cases again, so their only response will be re-activated: lockdown. Well, yes, the response now also includes vaccines as our only hope out of this, but those will take a long time to arrive everywhere, and both their efficacy and adverse effects remain major and untested questions.

Germany Reintroduces “Border Controls” With Austria, Sends Riot Police As Refugee Crisis Spirals Out Of Control

Germany Reintroduces “Border Controls” With Austria, Sends Riot Police As Refugee Crisis Spirals Out Of Control

Two weeks ago, in what was the first official shot across the bow to Europe’s long-standing “Schengen” customs union, we reported that the Italian province of Bolzano across from the Austrian border announced it is willing to “temporarily suspend Schengen” and “restore border controls” following a request by the German state of Bavaria.

Today, none other than Europe’s master state, Germany itself, is about to launch an ICBM at Schengen when, as BBC reports, “Germany is to reintroduce some form of controls on its border with Austria to cope with the influx of migrants, German and Austrian media report.” While the BBC said that it is not clear what measures would be introduced, it is likely that a full return to the pre-Schengen era, with extensive customs checks of every border crosser is imminent.

BBBC further reports that”more than 13,000 migrants arrived into Munich alone on Saturday. Germany’s vice-chancellor said the country was “at the limit of its capabilities”. Germany’s Bild newspaper and Austria’s Kronen Zeitung said controls would be in place on the Bavaria-Austria border. Germany expects 800,000 migrants to arrive this year.”

Also, according to Germany’s Spiegel, German Interior Minister, Thomas de Maiziere, would make an announcement in the coming hours. Since last month, Mr de Maiziere said the Schengen agreement, which allows free movement between a large number of European countries, could be suspended, it is quite likely that as of today, Europe’s customs union will officially be halted if only temporarily.

Kronen Zeitung said that Bavarian police will begin to carry out checks “to determine immediately who is entitled to asylum”, but it is not clear how such checks would be made.

Earlier on Sunday, Germany’s Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel, who is also economy minister, warned the country was being stretched to its limits by the new arrivals.

Riot police attack student protesters in Athens | ROAR Magazine

Riot police attack student protesters in Athens | ROAR Magazine.

It’s been some time since we last heard from the Greek movement. But, thanks to the Greek government and its riot police, today became a day of large student demonstrations, clashes with the cops, injuries and rising tension. First, let’s see what happened. Early in the morning, the Athens Law School students arrived at their university in order to carry out their assembly decision, which included a symbolic occupation of their university until the 17th of November — commemoration day of the 1973 student revolt against the military dictatorship.

The problem was that the school was already occupied by the riot police. The Athenian Universities’ rectors had decided to apply a peculiar “lock out” of the students and employees, supposedly for “security reasons”. The government gave a helping hand by sending in hundreds of cops, in riot gear, to carry out the decision. The cops assaulted the students, seriously injuring a couple of them and dispersing the rest. The news circulated, public outrage was expressed about the police blockades and violence, hundreds of students demonstrated in the center of Athens during lunchtime, and another protest — involving thousands — took place in the evening around the universities, confronting a total police blockade of the city center.
