Another “Bomb Cyclone” Hammers U.S. Plains And Midwest 

As the storm reaches “bomb cyclone” criteria on Thursday, more than 200 million people in the United States will feel the impact of this dangerous weather system sweeping across the Plains and Midwest.

Heavy snow has developed and will continue to fall on the northern Plains, a portion of the central Plains and Upper Midwest into Thursday night as arctic air rushes in, reported Reuters. 

Into the overnight, heavy snow will extend from northeast Colorado and northwest Kansas through Nebraska, South Dakota, southeast North Dakota, Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

“It is a bomb cyclone, the second we’ve had,” said Brian Hurley, a meteorologist at National Weather Service (NWS) in College Park, Maryland. “This is like a slow-moving snowstorm inside a hurricane.”

PowerOutage.Us shows 13,660 homes and businesses are without power in Minnesota, and about 9,500 in South Dakota around 7 am est.

Between 4 am and 8 am, there are 61 airport delays across the U.S., mostly seen at Minneapolis−Saint Paul International Airport, according to Flight Aware.

The region in focus is the Central U.S., the same area where a “bomb cyclone” hit last month and unleashed deadly flooding and blizzards. A little over $3 billion in damage was done to property, crops, and livestock in Nebraska and Iowa alone.

“The heaviest snow so far is piling up in South and North Dakota, with some areas getting 17 inches, and more is on the way,” Hurley said. “We’re expected another 10 to 15 inches before this is done.”

The snow adds new woes to Midwest farmlands which have been slammed by President’s Trade war and last month’s “bomb cyclone.”

NWS said this storm is a “historical springtime snowstorm.”

The storm is expected to crossover the Great Lakes area and northern Michigan on Friday, bringing more rain and snow to the East North Central U.S.

It’s Spring And A Monster Winter Storm Is About To Punish Central U.S. 

About three weeks into spring and 40 million Americans are under wind-related advisories, and millions more are expecting blizzard conditions across the Midwest.

Parts of Wyoming, Colorado, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Minnesota are expecting heavy snow resulting in blizzard conditions through Thursday.

“This is potentially a life-threatening storm,” Patrick Burke, a meteorologist at National Weather Service (NWS) in College Park, Maryland, said on Wednseday morning.

Parts of Utah, Nevada, western Wyoming, Idaho, and California could see wind speeds approaching hurricane strength on Wednesday, with some gusts up to 74 mph.

About 4 million people in Colorado, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Iowa, Wyoming, and Kansas are under severe winter storm warnings and blizzard warnings through Thursday morning, NWS said.

Flood evacuation orders have already been issued in Oregon and Washington state.

NWS warned that some areas of western Minnesota and southeast South Dakota could see 30 inches of heavy wet snow by Thursday afternoon.

The region in focus is the Central U.S., the same area where a “bomb cyclone” hit last month and unleashed deadly flooding and blizzards.

The extreme whipsaw in temperatures on Tuesday in the Central U.S., allowed the storm to supercharge overnight, could be on the verge of becoming a “bomb cyclone” in the next 12 hours.

Reuters said the drop in temperatures on March 13 was also responble for last month’s cyclone.

Regions in northwest Missouri’s Holt County have not yet recovered from last month’s flooding which estimates have put the damage into the billions of dollars.

The storm is expected to crossover the Great Lakes area and northern Michigan on Friday, bringing more rain and snow to the East North Central U.S.

A powerful winter storm is forecasted “to intensify explosively” in the southwest US on Tuesday into Wednesday, unleashing a wide array of life-threatening weather hazards for tens of millions of Americans, reported Axios.

The impact area is expected from North Texas through the Dakotas and Minnesota is expected to be hit the hardest. The storm will likely qualify as a meteorological “bomb” — short for bombogenesis, which describes storms whose central pressure drops 24 millibars in 24 hours. The lower the pressure and the quicker it drops, the more powerful the storm. This could be one for the record books.

“A strong storm is poised to rapidly develop across the Plains this week, meeting “bomb” criteria (deepening of 24mb or more in 24 hours).

This will spread heavy rains, thunderstorms, and flooding risks into the central Plains into Wednesday, then spread snow into the Dakotas later Wednesday into Wednesday night.

This storm is particularly strong for this time of year in this part of the world. Data suggests this storm will be the strongest (via minimum central pressure) storm since at least 1979 to impact the central Plains. With a central pressure equivalent to that of a category 2 hurricane, wind, rain, and snow will all be threats.

This will spark heightened wind generation in the southern Plains, and combined with melting snowpack, offer significant flooding risks across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest. This will halt any progress farmers were making toward fieldwork in this part of the country,” Meteorologist and owner of Empire Weather LLC., Ed Vallee.

The bombogenesis will detonate over Central Plains and bring almost every weather hazard possible at once. Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit south Texas to eastern Nebraska on Wednesday, which includes the potential for tornadoes.

Winter Storm: Northeast Braces For Next Round Of Harsh Weather This Weekend

Just when Zerohedge readers thought it was time for spring, old man winter has a few more tricks up his sleeve. New weather models show several storms will affect the Northeast over the weekend.

The storm system that brought severe weather from California to the Midwest is beginning to shift and could threaten Mid-Alantic and Northeast cities with snow, ice, and rain by this weekend.

Winter Storm Ryan will begin along the West Coast by late Friday, then move across  Rockies, Plains, Ohio Valley and Northeast through the weekend.

Winter storm watches have been published for California’s Sierra, Central Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast, where the weather is expected to deteriorate in the next 24 to 48 hours.

The storm is expected to impact the Northeast late Sunday into early Monday.

“The exact track of that storm and magnitude of the lingering cold air in its path will determine the extent and intensity of snow, ice and rain in the Eastern states from Sunday to early Monday,” according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Courtney Travis.

Here are the scenarios at play

If Winter Storm Ryan takes a northeastward route toward the central Appalachians and the mid-Atlantic coast as Travis believes (scenario 1), 4 to 8 inches of snow may fall from central Plains to the northern part of the Ohio Valley, the eastern Great Lakes, the Allegheny and Pocono mountains in Pennsylvania and northern New England.

This shift eastward would allow the bulk of the snow to fall in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and perhaps Boston. Such a path could result in significant travel disruptions Monday.

A new wave of Arctic air expected 

Despite Winter Storm Ryan’s track, a significant blast of Arctic air is inbound for Northeast and Midwest.

High winds will follow the leading edge of the Arctic air. 

Gusts between 40 and 55 mph are expected over the Upper Midwest and 30 and 45 mph in the Northeast.

AccuWeather said the blend of wind and falling temperatures would send RealFeel® Temperatures well below zero over the Upper Midwest, Mid-Alantic and Northeast.

Major Weekend Snow Storm Expected To Batter Northeast

A series of winter storms traversing the country will bring significant snow and ice to the Midwest and Northeast this weekend followed by an ice storm that could paralyze travelers.

Approximately 100 million people are currently under a winter storm watch, warning or advisory across the US.

Travel has already been disrupted, with 500 flights canceled as of Friday morning, according to FlightAware.com.

Vallee Weather Consulting meteorologist Ed Valle warns of heavy snow, with blizzard-like conditions, could leave parts of the northern Mid-Atlantic and Northeast with a “plethora of precipitation,” specifically, several feet of snow in parts of the interior Northeast.

“A strong storm will move into the Northeast over the coming days, delivering a plethora of precipitation types and hazards. Snow will be the main precipitation type from northern Pennsylvania into northern New England with 1 to 2 feet of snowfall expected. Amounts of 30-36” locally are possible in the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine – perfect conditions ahead of a long holiday weekend at ski resorts. Heaviest snow is expected from Saturday evening through Sunday morning is these regions. Further south, a nasty mix of precipitation types is expected from south-central PA into central and southern New England including Harrisburg, Pa., Allentown, Pa., Hartford, Ct., and Boston, Ma. Here, snow will be the initial hazard, transitioning to an icy mix of sleet and freezing rain overnight Saturday.

A modest accumulation of snow (4-8”) along with locally 0.25-0.50” icing is expected. Closer the coast, snow Saturday evening will change to rain overnight from Philadelphia to New York City, but not before a few inches of accumulation. As colder air rushes back in Sunday afternoon, a flash freeze is expected as temperatures tumble into the single digits above and below zero Sunday night. This will lead to any slush and standing water freezing quickly on roads and sidewalks. Brutally cold air will impact the entire Northeast Monday,” Vallee reported.

Parts of Canada could become the coldest spot on the planet with a winter storm coming with crazy frigid temperatures with wind chill factors in the -40oC level for some. This going to be really dangerous. Quite frankly, the human body was NOT designed to handle conditions like that. This is really very dangerous cold and not hype. Your eyes can actually freeze. Anyone who has ever been in real cold will notice that in cold weather notes your eyes will tear up, which is your body’s natural defense trying to reduce the freezing point. You better start regularly blinking your eyes to prevent them from freezing and going blind.

While your eyes can’t freeze solid, your extremities can. That includes feet, fingers, and toes. They can actually freeze to the point that the can even fall off your body, or else needing to be amputated. The human body is designed to maintain a core temperature of 98.6oF (37oC) exactly! Any deviation from that causes serious problems. When the body temperature begins to drop, that’s when hypothermia sets in. The statistics in Canada show that more than 80 people die from extreme cold, according to Environment Canada. 

People who have died from hypothermia seem to lose brain function and become completely confused. They begin taking off their clothes in their final death throes apparently assuming they are hot rather than cold.

If the migration of the North Pole is contributing to this extremely cold weather nobody really knows. We are definitely moving into Solar Minimum. Our greatest risk at this stage in the game is major volcanic eruptions that throw such much debris into the atmosphere we end up with a volcanic winter.

A Massive Winter Storm Buries Parts Of The US, Kills Seven 

After what was a quiet but abnormally warm start to 2019, a severe winter storm has left seven people dead as it charged across the Midwestern US, striking the Mid-Atlantic coast on Sunday.

By late Saturday night, the storm had shifted over the Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore region, where 4 to 7 inches of snow is on the ground/

Weather models suggest the snow could get heavier around 2:30 p.m. for a few hours, especially in the Washington metropolitan area.

The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) warned that freezing rain would also be a big concern for the region into the overnight.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency on Saturday in anticipation of the storm.

“I am declaring a state of emergency in order to prepare and coordinate the Commonwealth’s response to anticipated winter storm impacts, including snow and ice accumulations, transportation issues, and power outages,” said Northam.

The state of emergency allows officials to “mobilize resources and to deploy people and equipment to assist in response and recovery efforts,” according to the press release.

St. Louis, which was pounded the hardest by the storm so far, recorded almost 11 inches, forcing closures of Interstates 44, 64 and 70 around the city.

Parts of central Missouri, around Harrisburg, recorded almost 20 inches of snow.

Columbia, Missouri, saw more than one foot of snow, more than doubling a 109-year-old record for snowfall.

North Carolina Prepares For “Historic Storm;” Fears Of “Impossible Travel Conditions”

Ed Vallee, head meteorologist at Vallee Weather Consulting, is now warning that a “severe winter storm” is about to hit parts of North Carolina this weekend.

His forecast on Thursday, correctly pointed out that Winter Storm Diego was going to be a “historic storm in parts of NC and VA this weekend. European ensemble data is suggesting a wide area of 12″+ of snow, which is more than the seasonal normal snowfall in many areas outside of the mountains.”

While much of his forecast has not changed, he is indicating that western parts of the state could get 8 to 16 inches as the system is currently moving over south Texas towards the southeast as it collides with cold air.

“As we have been discussing in our going forecast, a severe winter storm will impact the western Carolinas and parts of Southwest Virginia this weekend. A small shift southward has removed areas in the Shenandoah (sp?) Valley of Virginia from heaviest accumulations, including the city of Roanoke, VA. However, we are still expecting some snowfall accumulation in this region. The hardest hit areas will likely be along the 1-77 corridor north of Charlotte, NC into southwestern Virginia, where 8-16” of snow is expected to fall. Further south and east, including major cities of Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, and Winston Salem, NC, snow is expected to evolve into a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain, potentially limiting snowfall accumulations. However, ice will be just as, if not more, impactful in these areas typically not equipped with proper equipment to remove such large amounts of snow and ice. This system will promote tough to at times impossible travel conditions along the major interstates of I-77, I-85, I-81, and I-40 Saturday night through Monday,” said Vallee.

“Historic Storm” To Bury Southern Appalachians In Snow; Expect Massive Travel Disruptions

Ed Vallee, head meteorologist at Vallee Weather Consulting, has certainly been on his weather game this year. Last month, his forecasts correctly pointed to a number of cross-country storms and unprecedented cold weather that punished the East Coast.

Now, his forecasts point to a new danger. Winter Storm Diego will travel through the southern US with a swath of snow, sleet and freezing rain from the southern Plains to the Ozarks, southern Appalachians, and parts of the Mid Atlantic late this week into early next week.

A winter storm will take shape across the Four Corners region of the U.S. late this week, and will move across the southern tier of the United States into the weekend. This sets the stage for an impactful early season storm in areas that typically don’t receive abundant winter weather. Snow and ice will impact the Panhandle of Texas and western Oklahoma Friday night into Saturday. As it moves eastward, it will pick up Gulf of Mexico moisture and allow for heavy snow and ice in the western Carolinas and western Virginia along the I-81, I-77, and I-85 corridors Saturday night through Monday. This looks to bring wintry impacts to cities such as Charlotte, NC, Raleigh, NC, Roanoke, VA, and Asheville, NC – all areas that typically average 14 inches of snow or less (all except Roanoke, VA average less than 7 inches) per year. This storm may provide those amounts or even more, particularly in areas west of I-77 in North Carolina, and along the I-81 corridor in southwest Virginia, said Vallee.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared an official weather emergency in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County on Thursday as the storm is expected to drop up to a foot of snow on New York City.

Nearly all flights out of La Guardia, New York City’s other major airport, were cancelled late last night in anticipation of the storm.

Prepare for Extreme Winter Weather: Forecasters Warn of Bomb Cyclone 

If you aren’t dealing with extreme winter weather, consider yourself lucky. 90% of the 48 continental U.S. states started off 2018 below freezing (32 degrees or lower). For weeks, severe winter weather has pounded many parts of U.S. and Canada with no end in sight.

Currently, a winter cyclone is projected to bring much of the East coast to a screeching halt where forecasters are warning to prepare for heavy snow, hurricane-force gusts, and blizzard conditions. With these types of frigid storms, expect schools to be canceled, flights to be canceled and utility companies to have widespread outages. Given the record-breaking low temperatures, hospitals could see a record number of cold weather injuries from the grid being down.

How to Prepare for Extreme Winter Weather

The primary principles for preparing for these types of extreme weather is to concentrate on the basics: heat, food, water, and first aid. Keeping the core warm by layering clothing is your main priority. Exposure-related injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia could occur quickly with this type of weather. This will be discussed further in the article.

Heat

The wood stove (wood burner, if you prefer) is the answer to keeping the abode heated when the temperature falls.  This is crucial to keep your pipes from freezing.  The problem being when you heat the place up too much (you should see mine…it’s only about 3’x2’x2’ but can heat the place up to 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit in nothing flat).  Too much heat and your food in your refrigerator is going to go bad faster.

A “Bomb Cyclone” Is Set To Detonate Off The East Coast

“This storm developing off the Southeast coast will meet the meteorological criteria of a “bomb” as it rapidly intensifies. The signal for a storm has been evident since last week, but as the track has been fine-tuned, impacts to the I-95 corridor are now expected. Snow, strong winds, and very cold temperatures are expected particularly the further east one heads,” said Ed Vallee, meteorologist at Vallee Weather Consulting LLC.

Winter Storm Grayson, a very large and powerful winter storm is threatening the East Coast of the United States with heavy snow, intense winds, and record-setting low temperatures. Winter storm watches and warnings have been issued for many coastal regions in north Florida to Maine from Wednesday into late Thursday.

This week’s storm may end up being worse than your average nor’easter, according to Bloomberg. It could produce a “bomb cyclone,” otherwise known as a bombogenesis, a phenomenon that occurs when a system’s central pressure drops steeply – 24 millibars or more – in 24 hours. If current computer models hold, that’ll start to happen somewhere off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and continue as the storm moves north. Hurricane-force wind warnings have been posted off the coast where ships could encounter winds of 80 miles (130 kilometers) an hour and waves as high as 26 feet on Thursday.

“The real apex, the peak of the storm, will be Cape Cod to Nova Scotia,” said Gregg Gallina, a forecaster at the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

This particular storm, which is currently developing off the coast of Florida, will devour enough warm water that it could be considered a winter hurricane by the time it leaves the Mid-Atlantic coast late Wednesday.

Northeast Forecast To Get Big Winter Blast

Three days ago, we asked: Is A Major Winter Blast Coming To The East Coast This Christmas? Despite all the chatter from global warming alarmists this year, there is a chance, some in the Northeast could experience a white Christmas.

Ed Vallee, a private weather forecaster based in Connecticut, reports merging storms will spread snow, rain, and mixed conditions from the central Appalachians to New England. The system will start on Sunday night and continue into Monday. Snow totals are forecasted to bring 2-8″ for parts of the Northeast (shown below). 

Vallee discusses the risks associated with the storm, along with more details into the timing of this system.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson, confirms Vallee’s forecast and said, there will be “enough snow to shovel and plow is likely from western and northern Pennsylvania and southern Ontario to Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.”

Here are the highways that could be heavily impacted by the storm include Interstate 70, I-76, I-78, I-80, I-81, I-84, I-86, I-87, I-88, I-89, I-90, I-91, I-93, I-95, and I-390. AccuWeather’s team expects delays at airports in Pittsburgh, New York City, and Boston.

Also, the National Weather Service has issued a deluge of winter weather advisories and warnings for the Northeast (as of 12-24).

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides an animated Gif depicting the trajectory of the system with the different types of precipitation probabilities.Accuweather sheds more color on the storm:

From just north and east of Philadelphia to New York City, Providence, Rhode Island, and New Bedford, Massachusetts, just enough snow may fall to cover the ground, just in time for a White Christmas.

Farther south and west from Atlantic City, New Jersey to Baltimore and Salisbury, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., little or no snow is likely. Little or no rain may fall as well due to a gap in the storm.

Winter Storm Neptune: ‘Life-Threatening’ Storm, Cold to Hit New England

Here’s a few updates on Winter Storm Neptune, which will hit the northeast U.S. on Friday, but the impact will be felt on Saturday and Sunday.

New England, including hard-hit Boston, will get slammed by the blizzard, says Accuweather.com.

“A storm passing through the Northeast riding a tidal wave of frigid air will evolve into a blizzard over New England before departing during the Valentine’s Day weekend,” the site says. “The worst of the storm will target the central and northern New England coast Saturday night into Sunday with wind-driven snow.”

 

Meanwhile, the “major cities in the path of the burst of snow that can cross hundreds of miles include Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Virginia,” says Accuweather.

The Weather Channel urged northeast residents to “prepare now” for the storm, which it dubbed Winter Storm Neptune. “Areas far removed from the center of the storm in the mid-Atlantic can experience life-threatening cold, the risk of power outages from high winds, and the possibility of road closures and flight cancellations,” it said.
