Bomb Cyclone Hits East Coast: Record Tide Floods Boston

Blizzards hit the East coast, record high tides flood Boston and in New Jersey, Christie declared a state of emergency.

The National Guard has been called out in several states as a bombogenesis or bomb cyclone makes its way up the East coast of the US.

“it is not the lowest pressure that defines bombogenisis but rather how quickly the pressure within the storm plummets. When the barometric pressure falls at least 0.71 of an inch (24 millibars) in 24 hours, a storm has undergone bombogenesis.”

We appear to be near the record high water level in . However, it is within a few tenths of an inch and this will need to be confirmed with the NOAA’s National Ocean Service (NOS) @noaaocean before we can confirm or deny whether the record was tied or broken

Record or near-record high tides accompanied the cyclone causing severe coastal flooding. Over 4,000 flights have been canceled. Newark and LaGuardia account for about half the total.

“Bomb Cyclone” Explodes Over East Coast, Sends NYC Nat Gas Price To Record High

“The strong storm system off the east coast continues to rapidly strengthen, bringing strong winds, heavy snow, and bitter wind chills to the I-95 corridor. As of 11 AM EST Thursday, the system had strengthened to 951mb, which is a drop of 59mb in 24 hours – more than double the criteria for bombogenesis (24mb/24hours). This storm will continue to produce winds in excess of 50mph from New York City into New England along with heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions. This will continue to lead to airport closures and delays along with other infrastructural damages. The combination of wind and snowfall may also lead to localized power outages,” said Ed Vallee, a meteorologist at Vallee Weather Consulting LLC.

He further warned, “Behind the storm, brutally cold air will invade the Northeast, with wind chills dipping well below zero. Numerous record low temperatures are expected this weekend across the Northeast Couple this with power outages, and this turns into a life-threatening situation quickly.”

High winds and heavy snow have contributed to whiteout conditions from coastal Delaware to New England, shutting airports, government offices, and schools, leaving much of the East Coast paralyzed.

On Thursday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared an official weather emergency in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County. Nearly all flights out of La Guardia, New York City’s other major airport have been canceled. The airline-tracking site FlightAware is reporting more than 3,200 flights have been canceled as of late Thursday morning.

Blizzard and winter storm warnings are in place along the coast from North Carolina to Maine, with the Weather Channel forecasting “snowfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour” and “wind gusts over 70 mph.”

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared an official weather emergency in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County on Thursday as the storm is expected to drop up to a foot of snow on New York City.

Nearly all flights out of La Guardia, New York City’s other major airport, were cancelled late last night in anticipation of the storm.

The Entire East Coast Needs to Get Ready for “Snow Bombogenesis”

We’re starting the New Year off with a bang in the form of Winter Storm Grayson. The next weather threat heading our way is a phenomenon called a “bombogenesis.” This occurs when a system’s central pressure plummets dramatically — “24 millibars or more — in 24 hours” according to Bloomberg.

Basically, it’s a hurricane. A winter hurricane.  The same high winds (up to 80 mph) and the same precipitation, but with snow instead of rain.

Because what could be more exciting than a hurricane and a blizzard all rolled into one kick-bootie storm?

The entire East Coast is at risk, from the northern part of Florida all the way up into Canada. The Southern US will get some snow and wind on Wednesday, and New England will be hit hard on Thursday.

…ice has already formed on fountains in some southern cities, including Savannah, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

In northern Florida and southern Georgia, a dangerous mix of snow and ice are in the forecast for Wednesday morning.

Residents of cities including Tallahassee, Florida, and Valdosta, Georgia, may see up to an inch of snow on the roadways during the Wednesday morning commute…

Through Wednesday the low pressure will ride up the East Coast, bringing a wintry mix of snow and ice through Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

Georgia and the Carolinas may see 1 to 3 inches of snow…

The storm will strengthen as it moves north overnight Wednesday. By Thursday morning, there will be heavy snow across the Mid-Atlantic coast, including Philadelphia and the New Jersey shore.

The Mid-Atlantic is forecast to have about 3 to 6 inches of snow, with lower amounts inland and higher amounts near the coast.

The snow will continue north Thursday. Long Island and New England — especially Maine — may get over 6 inches of snow. (source)

Prepare for Extreme Winter Weather: Forecasters Warn of Bomb Cyclone 

If you aren’t dealing with extreme winter weather, consider yourself lucky. 90% of the 48 continental U.S. states started off 2018 below freezing (32 degrees or lower). For weeks, severe winter weather has pounded many parts of U.S. and Canada with no end in sight.

Currently, a winter cyclone is projected to bring much of the East coast to a screeching halt where forecasters are warning to prepare for heavy snow, hurricane-force gusts, and blizzard conditions. With these types of frigid storms, expect schools to be canceled, flights to be canceled and utility companies to have widespread outages. Given the record-breaking low temperatures, hospitals could see a record number of cold weather injuries from the grid being down.

How to Prepare for Extreme Winter Weather

The primary principles for preparing for these types of extreme weather is to concentrate on the basics: heat, food, water, and first aid. Keeping the core warm by layering clothing is your main priority. Exposure-related injuries such as frostbite and hypothermia could occur quickly with this type of weather. This will be discussed further in the article.

Heat

The wood stove (wood burner, if you prefer) is the answer to keeping the abode heated when the temperature falls.  This is crucial to keep your pipes from freezing.  The problem being when you heat the place up too much (you should see mine…it’s only about 3’x2’x2’ but can heat the place up to 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit in nothing flat).  Too much heat and your food in your refrigerator is going to go bad faster.

North America is in the grip of a record-setting cold spell that’s set to culminate with the arrival of a “bomb cyclone” along the eastern seaboard late Thursday. The cold front has delivered temperatures that haven’t been seen in decades.

Already, stories about the epic cold snap have proliferated online. As we pointed out yesterday, a group of good Samaritans helped rescue a dozen elk that had crashed trough a thin patch of river ice and were in danger of freezing to death, or drowning. At the time, temperatures were below freezing across a staggering 92% of the US, with temperatures more than 20 degrees lower than their seasonal averages for this time of year.

Winter Storm Grayson, a very large and powerful winter storm is threatening the East Coast of the United States with heavy snow, intense winds, and record-setting low temperatures. Winter storm watches and warnings have been issued for many coastal regions in north Florida to Maine from Wednesday into late Thursday.

This week’s storm may end up being worse than your average nor’easter. That’s because meteorologists say it could produce a “bomb cyclone,” otherwise known as a bombogenesis, a phenomenon that occurs when a system’s central pressure drops steeply – by 24 millibars or more – in 24 hours.

If current computer models hold, that’ll start to happen somewhere off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and continue as the storm moves north. Hurricane-force wind warnings have been posted off the coast where ships could encounter winds of 80 miles (130 kilometers) an hour and waves as high as 26 feet on Thursday.

Already, the unusual weather patterns are causing all sorts of strange phenomena around the country. According to the New York Times, it’s too cold for many zoo penguins, which have been taken inside as a precaution ahead of the storm. Meanwhile, sharks have washed up dead on the Atlantic coast.

“This storm developing off the Southeast coast will meet the meteorological criteria of a “bomb” as it rapidly intensifies. The signal for a storm has been evident since last week, but as the track has been fine-tuned, impacts to the I-95 corridor are now expected. Snow, strong winds, and very cold temperatures are expected particularly the further east one heads,” said Ed Vallee, meteorologist at Vallee Weather Consulting LLC.

This particular storm, which is currently developing off the coast of Florida, will devour enough warm water that it could be considered a winter hurricane by the time it leaves the Mid-Atlantic coast late Wednesday.
