Climate Scientists Attack Tony Abbott’s ‘Misleading’ Speech to Global Warming Policy Foundation

Climate Scientists Attack Tony Abbott’s ‘Misleading’ Speech to Global Warming Policy Foundation

Tony Abbott

Abbott told the contrarian Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF) that rising carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning could be “beneficial” and compared acceptance of human-caused climate change to religion.

The GWPF, founded by former Thatcher government treasurer Lord Nigel Lawson, consistently pushes positions on climate change that fall well outside the established science.

The foundation, which claims to be bi-partisan but has accepted funding from many conservative figures, had declined requests from several specialist climate change media outlets to hear the Abbott lecture, claiming the speech “was not a media event.”

Dr. Benjamin Henley, a University of Melbourne scientist specializing in ancient climate change and climate models, who read the transcript, said: “It is precarious territory for a politician to enter the scientific boxing ring, with only a bible of conspiracy theories and misconstrued talking points in hand. His speech is full of falsehoods, miscomprehension, and basic untruths.”

Abbott lost the leadership of the conservative Liberal Party and, with it, the Prime Ministership, in September 2015 to the country’s current leader, Malcolm Turnbull.

Abbott’s public position on climate science has flip-flopped over the years. He once described the science as “absolute crap” but during office, claimed to accept the basic facts and said he took the issue seriously.

But he has also denied any link between rising temperatures and Australia’s bushfires, going against decades of research.

Abbott’s ‘Misleading’ Claims

Professor Steven Sherwood of the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales refuted Abbott’s claim that climate models were wrong:

Goldman Strikes Again: Did A Probe Into “Global Warming” Fraud Cost A Prime Minister’s Job

Goldman Strikes Again: Did A Probe Into “Global Warming” Fraud Cost A Prime Minister’s Job

When Tony Abbott became Australia’s prime minister in September 2013, the chain of events that would prematurely end his tenure may already have been in motion: just a few months later China would order its out of control shadow banking system to put on hold its debt issuance machinery, which as we reported a year ago, ground to a complete stop around November 2014 (which also was the explanation for the dramatic slowdown in the US economy over the winter as the collapse in China’s Total Social Financing growth sent a deflationary ripple effect around the globe), which – as we warned at the time – would have dire consequences on all of China’s “feeder” economies, namely Brazil and Australia.

But while we have been tracking the implosion of Brazil’s economy since December, long before the rest of the world noticed the calamitous collapse of what was once Latin America’s most vibrant economy, it was a very recent event in Australia – not the country’s parallel economic slowdown also due to China’s hard landing: that was painfully clear long in advance – that took many by surprise. Namely, the resignation of Tony Abbott almost exactly two years after becoming Prime Minister.

And while it is easy to blame his admission of failure on external factors, namely the Chinese slowdown, a very surprising finding has emerged over the past few days, one which reveals Abbott’s “ouster” in a totally different light.

According to Freedom of Information documents obtained by Australia’s ABC, now-former prime minister Tony Abbott’s own department discussed setting up an investigation into the Bureau of Meteorology amid media claims it was exaggerating estimates of global warming.

Yes, it appears that the prime minister himself had dared to question to prevailing status quo on “global warming.”

ABC reports that in August and September 2014, The Australian newspaper published reports questioning the Bureau of Meteorology’s (BoM) methodology for analyzing temperatures, reporting claims BoM was “wilfully ignoring evidence that contradicts its own propaganda.”

Australia Overthrows its Prime Minister in the Blink of an Eye

Australia Overthrows its Prime Minister in the Blink of an Eye

Abbott Tony

In Australia, we are seeing signs of political unrest. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has been a complete disaster. It is really a wonder how these people are elected and what goes through their minds. Abbott appears stunned by the swift pace of the challenge to his leadership. His collapse in the polls warned that he was off the mark, becoming an embarrassment for Australia as a nation on the world stage.

Essentially, for the past seven months following a no-confidence vote, Tony Abbott was overthrown this week in a leadership challenge from his popular former communications minister, Malcolm Turnbull, who won the Liberal Party vote 54-44 in Canberra just hours after declaring his leadership bid.

SATURNUS

This is the peak in government. During the fall of the Roman Empire, between 244 AD and 268 AD, there were 26 Roman Emperors within a period of 24 years. As the economy begins to turn down, we should expect to see this type of response within politics. This is the type of trend we are entering post-2015.75. This is what we should expect to see as people become disillusioned by government and confidence collapses.

First the Miners, now the Banks, then Property? Going to be a Hard Landing for… Australia

A housing market set for the mother of all corrections.

“I think it’s important that people don’t hyperventilate about these type of things.” With these words, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott tried to soothe the world’s rattled nerves today about the ongoing crash in China. Australia is heavily exposed to China, the biggest consumer of its commodity exports.

“It is not unusual to see stock market corrections,” he said about the relentlessly brutal three-month crash that has taken the Shanghai Composite down 43% so far.

“It is not unusual to see bubbles burst in particular markets and for there to be some flow-on effect in other stock markets, but the fundamentals are sound,” he said, speaking of the Chinese fundamentals, and by extension, of the Australian fundamentals that depend so much on Chinese fundamentals.

And he said this though factory activity in China shrank at the fastest rate since the Financial Crisis, other indicators are heading south, cars sales are suddenly plunging, and the People’s Bank of China started devaluating the yuan to mitigate the problem, thus further hurting Australian exports to China.

So here’s Lindsay David, founder of LF Economics in Australia, weighing in on the “sound” fundamentals in Australia.

Fairfax Ipsos poll shows climate change concerns heating up around Tony Abbott

Fairfax Ipsos poll shows climate change concerns heating up around Tony Abbott.

Six out of 10 of Australians think Tony Abbott’s Direct Action policy has left the country with an inadequate policy response to the problem of global warming, according to the latest Fairfax Ipsos poll.

The finding comes as Foreign Minister Julie Bishop attends a major international climate change conference in Peru, accompanied at the Prime Minister’s insistence, by Trade Minister and global warming sceptic, Andrew Robb.

His inclusion is being seen as a signal to those within the Coalition in favour of more ambitious emissions reduction targets that Mr Abbott remains opposed to ramping up policy even as the rest of the world positions to do so.

The phone survey of 1401 people taken between December 4 and 6, showed 57 per cent of respondents believed the Coalition’s proposed Direct Action policy was “too little” to deal with global warming.

Coal versus climate in Australia – Features – Al Jazeera English.

Australia continues to frustrate efforts by fellow G20 members to include climate change on the agenda at the upcoming leaders’ summit in the eastern city of Brisbane this weekend.

As the host nation sets the G20 meeting’s agenda, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott – an avowed sceptic of human-caused climate change – has resisted calls for global warming to be discussed when world leaders gather on November 15 and 16.

Despite a recent official draft summary of proceedings appearing to make token references to climate change, the level of importance afforded to the issue remains unclear. Climate change was on the agenda at the previous eight G20 summits.

Since forming the government in September 2013, Abbott has repealed Australia’s nascent emissions trading scheme and slashed funding to agencies and programmes promoting renewable energy and the environment.

Are we peddling fear just for the sake of it? – The Drum (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Are we peddling fear just for the sake of it? – The Drum (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

As disturbing as the events in Ottawa were, we are entitled to ask whether the political response here in Australia, on the other side of the world, was helpful or merely exploitative, writes Barrie Cassidy.

The threat of terrorism is real, but is it exaggerated?

The need to be vigilant is obvious, but do we have to live in fear?

Every time someone goes berserk overseas, do we have to behave as if it happened around the corner?

Why in 2014 is every act by a crazed gunman immediately interpreted as an act of terrorism?

And when does the rhetoric of politicians cross the boundaries from sensible public safety and security warnings to fear for the sake of it?

As disturbing as the events in Ottawa were, they could have been the actions of a “lone wolf” with a criminal history. Even if it turns out he was part of some sort of organised global terror attack – what the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, described in the Parliament as part of Islamic State’s “war on the world” – we are still entitled to ask whether the response here in Australia, on the other side of the world, was helpful or merely exploitative.

Australia’s Energy Policy Is Simple. Listen To The UN And Do The Opposite

Australia’s Energy Policy Is Simple. Listen To The UN And Do The Opposite.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s energy policy seems to stick to one iron-clad mantra: Whatever the United Nations advises, do the exact opposite. While this might seem like a flight of fancy chosen to make this article’s lede a little sexier, evidence is piling up.

Last May, ahead of the UN Climate Change Summit, the World Bank teamed up with a number of countries and corporations to move the needle on carbon pricing. No longer did this group think it necessary to argue over whether carbon pricing was necessary, instead, it sought to establish a fair price for carbon. Rachel Kyte, Vice President of the World Bank Group and its special envoy for climate change issued this call to arms, saying that “a carbon price provides a necessary signal for investment in low-carbon and resilient growth…it should be part of any package of policies to scale up mitigation.” Its initiative was a runaway success as 73 countries and over 1,000 companies signed up, including British Airways, Unilever and IKEA.
