The No-Excuses Guide to Self-Reliance in the Suburbs
The No-Excuses Guide to Self-Reliance in the Suburbs
Do you live in the suburbs but yearn for the farm life?
The two do not have to be mutually exclusive. There’s a guide that can help you realize your self-reliance dreams no matter where you live.
As most of you know, I moved last year from my 5-acre farm in Northern California to my little house in suburban Virginia so my youngest daughter could start college early. It has been quite a change to go from a huge property with chickens, multiple gardens, and a bubbling creek to a tiny little fenced-in yard on the edge of a city. But, I’ve made the best of it and had my biggest tomato harvest to date here in town. In fact, it’s almost April and my root cellar still has several butternut squashes from last year’s harvest, and I have a couple of jars of home-grown marinara on the shelves.
How did I do it?
I used a variety of techniques found in the book, The Suburban Micro-Farm. This is the best gardening book I own for making the most of a small space for growing food. The ideas in it are not only useful but also beautiful.
Best of all, there’s a brand-new edition for your perusal. This one is illustrated with inspiring full-color photographs that will make you want to go dig in the dirt immediately. And it’s out just in time for spring planting! (Check it out HERE) If you have permaculture dream for a small space, this is the book for you. It’s the kind of book you will refer to again and again because it is such a thorough wealth of information.

Thousands More Stores Are on the 2018 Retail Apocalypse DEATH LIST: Are your local stores on the list?
Thousands More Stores Are on the 2018 Retail Apocalypse DEATH LIST: Are your local stores on the list?
Every year, it seems like more and more retail outlets are going out of business, resulting in the loss of jobs and local supplies. Last year, hundreds of stores closed, and this year, even more shops are scheduled to shut their doors for good.
The 2018 Death List
This year, in an effort to save their businesses, the following retailers will close hundreds of their stores, according to Fox Business.
- Abercrombie & Fitch: 60 more stores are charted to close
- Aerosoles: Only 4 of their 88 stores are definitely remaining open
- American Apparel: They’ve filed for bankruptcy and all their stores have closed (or will soon)
- BCBG: 118 stores have closed
- Bebe: Bebe is history and all 168 stores have closed
- Bon-Ton: They’ve filed for Chapter 11 and will be closing 48 stores.
- The Children’s Place: They plan to close hundreds of stores by 2020 and are going digital.
- CVS: They closed 70 stores but thousands still remain viable.
- Foot Locker: They’re closing 110 underperforming stores shortly.
- Guess: 60 stores will bite the dust this year.
- Gymboree: A whopping 350 stores will close their doors for good this year
- HHGregg: All 220 stores will be closed this year after the company filed for bankruptcy.
- J. Crew: They’ll be closing 50 stores instead of the original 20 they had announced.
- J.C. Penney: They’ve closed 138 stores and plan to turn all the remaining ones into toy stores.
- The Limited: All 250 retail locations have been closed and they’ve gone digital in an effort to remain in business.
- Macy’s: 7 more stores will soon close and more than 5000 employees will be laid off.
- Michael Kors: They’ll close 125 stores this year.
- Payless: They’ll be closing a whopping 800 stores this year after recently filing for bankruptcy.
- Radio Shack: More than 1000 stores have been shut down this year, leaving them with only 70 stores nationwide.
- Rue 21: They’ll be closing 400 stores this year.

Why People Will Happily Line Up to be Microchipped Like Dogs
Why People Will Happily Line Up to be Microchipped Like Dogs
So…some people actually want to be microchipped like a dog. They’re lining up for it. They’re having parties to get it done. It if isn’t available to them, they’re totally bummed out.
I’m not even going to venture into the religious aspect of having a microchip inserted into a human being. Let’s just talk about the secular ramifications.
Certain folks won’t be happy until everyone has a computer chip implanted in them. Here’s how this could go.
- Initially, it would be the sheep who blindly desire to be chipped for their own “convenience” leading the way.
- Then, it would become remarkably inconvenient not to be chipped – sort of like it’s nearly impossible to not have a bank account these days.
- Then, the last holdouts could be forcibly chipped by law.
Read on, because I could not make this stuff up.
Some employers are chipping workers.
Last summer, the internet was abuzz about a company in Wisconsin that wanted to microchip their employees. Workers at the technology company, Three Market Square, were given the option of having a chip implanted in their hands and 50 out of 80 eagerly lined up for the privilege.
Why? So they could buy food or swipe their way through building security with a wave of their hand. Software engineer Sam Bengtson explained why he was on board.
“It was pretty much 100 percent yes right from the get-go for me. In the next five to 10 years, this is going to be something that isn’t scoffed at so much, or is more normal. So I like to jump on the bandwagon with these kind of things early, just to say that I have it.” (source)

Depravity, Frivolity, and Dissent: Are We Watching the End of an Empire?
Depravity, Frivolity, and Dissent: Are We Watching the End of an Empire?
(ADULT CONTENT WARNING)
A 40-year-old essay predicted the end of an empire and current events sure make it look like we’re watching it happen in real time.
I spend a fair bit of time scanning the news every day for my site, Preppers Daily News. And some days, I just have to shake my head as I realize that people are so desperate for…something…that they just keep going to further and further extremes to try and find that elusive thing their lives are missing.
The more I read, the more likeness I see to Sir John Glubb’s essay, The Fate of Empires and Search for Survival. (It’s only 24 pages and you should definitely read it – it’s brilliant.) Sir Glubb wrote this outstanding work when he was 79 years old, after a lifetime of being a soldier, traveling the world, and analyzing history. It’s well worth a read as he goes into detail about the fall of empires past.
The final stage of the end of an empire is the Age of Decadence. Some signs of this age are political dissensions (Antifa, anyone?), an influx of foreigners (Europe, anyone?), the welfare state (America, anyone?), despair (350 million people diagnosed), depravity (see below), and the rise of frivolity as people try to fill lives that have less and less meaning.
Sound familiar?
This video is a brief synopsis of the signs of an empire that is near its end.
A synopsis I read makes Glubb’s theory entirely applicable to modern society:
In the age of decadence many people choose to behave in ways that are unsustainable, apparently unaware of the consequences. They indulge in excessive, often conspicuous, consumption.

`The Self-Reliance Weekly Report: Acts of Nature, Farm Fresh Eggs, and DIYs
`The Self-Reliance Weekly Report: Acts of Nature, Farm Fresh Eggs, and DIYs
The Self-Reliance Weekly Report discusses acts of nature, along with a healthy helping of information about eggs from the backyard and, of course, unique and frugal DIYs from across the web.
Despite the epic drought in California, the state also has a long history of devastating floods. We have received record amounts of rain recently, and many of us are dealing with just that.
Sometimes we don’t spend enough time thinking about the weather and how it affects our efforts to be self-reliant. Too much rain and your plants and livestock are at risk, too little rain and your plants and livestock are at risk. Add to this the fury of Mother Nature when she unleashes high winds and tornadoes, and any sensible person begins to realize that we can prep all we want, but we are still at the mercy of the weather.
The Self-Reliance Weekly Report is a collection of strategies, made up of the articles, books, DIYs, and products that I found useful on my own little prepper’s homestead.
Prepping
Tis the Season…for Tornadoes
Anyone who lives in an area prone to tornadoes knows that the season for them is fast approaching (and here already in some places). While some believe that you can’t really prep for a massively destructive act of nature, there are a few things you can do. For example, you can learn the signs of an impending tornado (and even volunteer as a storm spotter to provide valuable information for others), you can make a plan with your family, and you can stock your storm shelter in the event that you must hunker down there to wait out a threat.

#15 The 10 Daily Habits of Frugal People
Being a black belt in frugality takes creativity and an optimistic outlook. It should never be some grim, sad thing that you have to do. It should be something that you choose to do. By finding joy in your non-consumerism, you will be far more successful at it. It becomes a game that you win if you can do something for free that others spend money on.
When you feel like you require less, then you are happy with less. This means that you have to spend less time working at things you may not truly enjoy to pay for the things that you never actually needed in the first place. This means that the money that you have goes a lot further and that your life feels a lot more satisfying.
#14 The Top 10 Teas for Your Herbal Medicine Cabinet
When you’re sick, little is more comforting than holding a steaming mug of fragrant tea in both hands, warming your face with the hot steam. Somehow, no matter how rotten you felt before, you instantly feel just a tiny bit better.
