Chaos In Yemen: Chinese Troops Arrive As US-Armed Rebels Set Sights On Central Bank

Chaos In Yemen: Chinese Troops Arrive As US-Armed Rebels Set Sights On Central Bank

Iranian-backed Houthi rebels are now in control of the central Crater district in the key Yemeni port city of Aden despite a seventh consecutive day of bombing raids by the Saudi-led coalition which is keen on preventing the city from falling. Aden is the second largest city in the country with a population of some 800,000 and as noted by The Guardian, is “the last major holdout of fighters loyal to the Saudi-backed President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.” Residents have reported the presence of tanks, sniper fire, and patrolling Houthi fighters as the militia moves closer to exerting complete control over the city.

Via The Guardian:

Residents of Aden’s central Crater district said Houthi fighters and their allies were in control of the neighbourhood by midday on Thursday, deploying tanks and foot patrols through its otherwise empty streets after heavy fighting in the morning.

It was the first time fighting on the ground had reached so deeply into central Aden. Crater is home to the local branch of Yemen’s central bank and many commercial businesses.

“People are afraid and terrified by the bombardment,” one resident, Farouq Abdu, told Reuters by telephone from Crater. “No one is on the streets – it’s like a curfew“.

Another resident said Houthi snipers had deployed on the mountain overlooking Crater and were firing on the streets below. Several houses were on fire after being struck by rockets, and messages relayed on loudspeakers urged residents to move out to safer parts of the city, he said.

Armed With US Weapons, Yemen Rebels Advance On President As Saudi Arabia Prepares For War

Armed With US Weapons, Yemen Rebels Advance On President As Saudi Arabia Prepares For War

UPDATE: *PRESIDENT OF YEMEN SAID TO HAVE LEFT THE COUNTRY ON BOAT FROM ADEN, AP SAYS

Previously we reported that in the latest “coup” for US foreign policy, the US had “lost” over $500 million in weapons in Yemen, until recently an Obama administration foreign policy “success story”, following the abrupt evacuation of the US embassy there, all of which ended up in local rebel and al-Qaeda hands.

It didn’t take long for the local Houthi rebels to put all these weapons to good use: as Reuters reports, Houthi forces in Yemen backed by allied army units seized a key air base on Wednesdayand appeared poised to capture the southern port of Aden from defenders loyal to President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, local residents said.

As a reminder this is the second time the Yemeni president, so close to Obama, will be forced to uproot and get out of Dodge, after his prompt “evacuation” from the capital Sanaa a month ago:

The Houthis and their military allies later advanced to within 40km (25 miles) of the city, where Hadi has been holed up since fleeing the group’s stronghold in the capital Sanaa last month.

Yemen’s slide toward civil war has made the country a crucial front in mostly Sunni Saudi Arabia’s rivalry with Iran, which Riyadh accuses of sowing sectarian strife through its support for the Houthis.

Sunni Arab monarchies around Yemen have condemned the Houthi takeover as a coup and have mooted a military intervention in favor of Hadi in recent days.

Yemen president quits amid worsening crisis

Yemen president quits amid worsening crisis

Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi quits along with Prime Minister Khaled Bahah as Houthi rebels consolidate grip on capital

Yemen’s President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi has quit along with his prime minister and cabinet, plunging the country into political crisis even as Houthi rebels consolidated their grip on the capital.

Hours after Hadi resigned, authorities in four provinces of Yemen’s formerly independent south, including its main city Aden, said they would defy all military orders from Sanaa.

The committee in charge of military and security affairs for Aden, Abyan, Lahej and Daleh, which is loyal to Hadi, condemned the “tragic events in Sanaa and the totally unacceptable demands made by the Houthis,” the Shia fighters who have controlled much of the capital since September.

Hadi’s resignation on Thursday came a day after he and Houthi rebels announced that they had reached an agreement to resolve the crisis gripping the country.

Government spokesman Rageh Badi said the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Khaled Bahah handed its resignation to Hadi on Thursday without providing further details, the AP news agency reported. Hadi then resigned shortly afterwards.
