Purported Islamic State Video Calls For Attacks On Canadians
Purported Islamic State Video Calls For Attacks On Canadians.
OTTAWA – A slickly produced video released on Sunday urged Muslims to launch indiscriminate attacks against Canadians, similar to those carried out in October in Ottawa and Montreal.
The SITE Intelligence Group, an American based company that monitors trends within the global jihadist movement, said the video was produced by the Islamic State and the Levant. It was also been distributed on Twitter and jihadi forums.
On the video a man, who says he is a Canadian and identifies himself as “Abu Anwar al-Canadi,” urges his Muslim countrymen to follow the example of Martin Couture-Rouleau.
The National Post identified the man as John Maguire, a former University of Ottawa student who converted to Islam and became radicalized before leaving Canada last year. The newspaper cited friends and family.
The 23-year-old is among dozens of Canadians under RCMP investigation after allegedly making their way to Syria.

‘Extremism’: Perception vs reality? – Inside Story – Al Jazeera English
‘Extremism’: Perception vs reality? – Inside Story – Al Jazeera English.
The rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria and Iraq is raising fears of radicalisation across Europe.
The perception is of battle-hardened fighters returning from the frontline, full of anger and resentment, prepared to carry on the fight at home.
Numbers vary, but it is estimated around 3,000 European citizens have taken up arms in Syria.
The UK is leading European governments in drawing up measures to combat the potential threat posed by assumed radicals.
In its latest report, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, Europol, categorised 152 “terrorist attacks” in EU member states in 2013.
Of those, most were related to separatist groups, while “religious radicalisation” appeared to be evident in just two attacks.
So how do authorites balance the perceived threat from a comparitively small numbers of fighters returning from abroad, against the threat from myriad groups, categorised as “extremist”, already established on their soil?

Syria: US-led strikes failed to weaken ISIS — RT News
Syria: US-led strikes failed to weaken ISIS — RT News.
The Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has not been weakened since US-led airstrikes began in September, Syria’s foreign minister said, adding that nothing will change until Turkey increases security at its borders.

“All the indications say that [the Islamic State] today, after two months of coalition air strikes, is not weaker,” Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem told the Beirut-based Al Mayadeen TV on Friday.
US-led airstrikes in Syria against the IS began as part of a larger effort to battle the jihadist group after it had seized vast amounts of territory in Iraq and Syria. Despite carrying out airstrikes in Syria, Washington has refused to work with the country’s government, stating that it wants to see Bashar Assad ousted. Turkey shares the latter stance with the US.

Egypt armed group pledges allegiance to ISIL – Middle East – Al Jazeera English
Egypt armed group pledges allegiance to ISIL – Middle East – Al Jazeera English.
Egypt’s Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the country’s most active armed group, pledged its allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group, in a recording posted on its Twitter account.
If genuine, the declaration of allegiance would be a boost for ISIL which has changed its name to Islamic State, showing its widening influence in the region alongside its territorial advances in Iraq and Syria.
“We announce our pledge of allegiance to the caliph Ibrahim Ibn Awad … to listen and obey,” the audio recording said, referring to ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
In the audio clip, which is 9 minutes and 26 seconds in length, the Sinai-based armed group also urged Muslims around the world to follow suit and support ISIL.
“Your unity is strength and your division is weakness… Determine your fate, unite among yourself, and support your [Islamic] State,” the recording said.
Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which means Partisans of Jerusalem, had previously expressed support for ISIL, but stopped short of pledging its allegiance before Monday, even denying it last week.

ISIL fighters make gains in northern Iraq – Middle East – Al Jazeera English
ISIL fighters make gains in northern Iraq – Middle East – Al Jazeera English.
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has continued to gain ground in northern Iraq despite weeks of US-led air strikes, and are now moving closer to the Iraq-Kurdish city of Erbil.
ISIL fighters are battling Kurdish volunteer troops in the town of al-Kuwayr, about 60km southwest of Erbil.
However, national security expert Douglas Ollivant, of the New America Foundation, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that for now there was no immediate threat of ISIL closing in on Erbil.
Ollivant said that it is likely that the armed group will concentrate on al-Kuwayr, as they face a stronger resistance from Kurdish fighters and US-led air power should they make their way further into Kurdish areas.
“There are significant defences between these towns and Erbil,” he said. “Erbil and Baghdad are still safe at this point.”

Not Again! US Trained Syrian “Moderates” Surrender To Jihadists—–Hand Over Heavy Weapons | David Stockman’s Contra Corner
Two of the main rebel groups receiving weapons from the United States to fight both the regime and jihadist groups in Syria have surrendered to al-Qaeda.
The US and its allies were relying on Harakat Hazm and the Syrian Revolutionary Front to become part of a ground force that would attack the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil).
For the last six months the Hazm movement, and the SRF through them, had been receiving heavy weapons from the US-led coalition, including GRAD rockets and TOW anti-tank missiles.
But on Saturday night Harakat Hazm surrendered military bases and weapons supplies to Jabhat al-Nusra, when the al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria stormed villages they controlled in northern Idlib province.
The development came a day after Jabhat al-Nusra dealt a final blow to the SRF, storming and capturing Deir Sinbal, home town of the group’s leader Jamal Marouf.
The attack caused the group, which had already lost its territory in Hama to al-Qaeda, to surrender.

War on Terror, War on Muslims? – Empire – Al Jazeera English
War on Terror, War on Muslims? – Empire – Al Jazeera English.
US President Barack Obama is vowing to “degrade, and ultimately destroy” a terrorist group destabilising the Middle East he says could threaten Americans at home.
Sound familiar? George W Bush made a similar vow, yet more than a decade after launching the so-called War on Terror, both the war and the terror are still raging.
Obama says the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) will be different than the two wars started by Bush. But Muslims looked at with suspicion around the world are wondering, how different will their treatment be?

Muslim-Canadians decry attacks amid backlash – Features – Al Jazeera English
Muslim-Canadians decry attacks amid backlash – Features – Al Jazeera English.
Montreal, Canada – As more details emerge about separate attacks on soldiers and government institutions last week in Ottawa and Quebec, Muslim leaders are urging Canadians not to typecast the entire community amid fears of a backlash.
Corporal Nathan Cirillo was shot dead at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on Wednesday, while a hit-and-run vehicle attack in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec days earlier killed Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and wounded another soldier.
Many local media reports described the perpetrators – Michael Zehaf-Bibeau in Ottawa, and Martin Couture-Rouleau in Quebec – as Muslim converts with some inferring the men supported the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper described Couture-Rouleau as “an ISIL-inspired terrorist“, while much media attention focused on Zehaf-Bibeau’s Libyan father, and attempts he made to renew his Libyan passport.
