‘F**k austerity’: Protesters clash with cops outside opening night at La Scala, Milan — RT News.
At least 300 protesters clashed with riot police in an anti-austerity march in Milan, Italy, outside La Scala which opened its glamorous opera season. Activists threw Molotov cocktails and flares, leaving two officers injured.
The demonstrators were protesting against the austerity policies of Italian PM Matteo Renzi. They demanded rights for social housing after authorities launched a series of squatter evictions.
Among the protesters there were public workers and students who voiced their criticism against Italy’s labor reforms.
About 1,000 officers attempted to hold back the protesters, who were carrying banners reading “fight the power”, “we resist!” and “Jobs Act = Bad Jobs.” Some of the banners were slightly more radical, with expressions like “F**k austerity.”

Papua New Guinea police and army involved in shootout at lock-up – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Papua New Guinea’s police and army have formed a joint taskforce to investigate a shootout between the two forces that left four men in hospital with gunshot wounds.
Businesses located near the confrontation closed their doors and there were reports of looting following the clash.
“After last night’s stand off, culminating from a drunken brawl between our soldiers and policemen … senior officers from both the defence force and the constabulary have now formed a task force to investigate,” deputy police commissioner Jim Andrews said.
“I appeal to all members of the constabulary to refrain from provoking or inciting further violence with our counterparts from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF).”
The altercation began in the early hours of Saturday morning in the Port Moresby suburb of Boroko.
Police say a group of soldiers were drunk and disorderly on the street in front of a nightclub.
They arrested several soldiers and locked them up at the nearby Boroko police station.
A short time later, a group of soldiers arrived at the police station and managed to free three soldiers from the cells.

Athens on fire as rioters mark anniversary of police killing of teen — RT News
Athens on fire as rioters mark anniversary of police killing of teen — RT News.
Greek police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds during clashes in the capital. Athens was gripped with protests marking six years since police shot dead an unarmed teenager during an anti-austerity rally.
At least 8,000 demonstrators marched in Athens on Saturday commemorating the sixth anniversary since the police slaying of Alexandros Grigoropoulos. Grigoropoulos’ murder on December 6, 2008 sparked violent clashes across Greece, with cars being burned, shops looted, and police attacked in a number of Greek cities.
The violence on Saturday began at 19:30 in the evening by a group of some 200 black-clad masked men, local media reported. They started setting on fire cars and bank ATMs and threw Molotov cocktails and other projectiles at police in the bohemian neighborhood of Exarchia, where Grigoropoulos was killed.

Protests against police violence flare for third night in New York | Reuters
Protests against police violence flare for third night in New York | Reuters.
(Reuters) – Protesters in New York and other U.S. cities rallied for a third straight night on Friday denouncing the use of deadly force by police against minorities, as prosecutors said they would consider charges against an officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man in November.
The killing of Akai Gurley, 28, gunned down in a dimly lit stairwell in the New York borough of Brooklyn, was the latest in a string of lethal police actions fueling public outrage over what many perceive as race-based violence by law enforcement.
This week’s wave of angry but largely peaceful protests began Wednesday when a New York grand jury declined to bring charges against white officer Daniel Pantaleo in the chokehold death of Eric Garner, a black 43-year-old father of six.
A videotape of the confrontation on Staten Island in July showed Pantaleo’s arm across Garner’s neck as four officers subdued the unarmed man on suspicion of selling cigarettes illegally. Garner was pinned face down to the pavement as he repeatedly gasped, “I can’t breathe” – a phrase protesters have transformed into a rallying cry.
The decision sparing Pantaleo from prosecution was announced nine days after a Missouri grand jury chose not to indict a white policeman for the shooting death in August of an unarmed black teenager in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, spurring two nights of arson and unrest there.

At least 15 people have been arrested after a peaceful support rally for jailed hunger strike anarchist turned into violent confrontation with police. Authorities used tear gas and stun grenades to quell rioters carrying Molotov cocktails.
As an estimated between 8,000 and 10,000 protesters marched through the central Athens shouting slogans in support of Nikos Romanos, the imprisoned anarchist who is staging a hunger strike as he demands the right to be able to attend university, anarchists’ march got violent on the streets of Exarchia, downtown Athens.
Protesters have been smashing cars, setting fire to bins, burned cars and erected barricades in several streets of the popular neighborhood. At least 10 cars have been overturned with five of them destroyed, local media reports.
Youths wearing hoods broke the glass front of the National Bank while overturning a bus to make barricades.
The focus of the riots became the gate of the Athens University, on Stournari road, where some 80 rioters entered the premises.

Hong Kong police pepper spray protesters as hundreds try to surround govt office — RT News
Hong Kong police pepper spray protesters as hundreds try to surround govt office — RT News.
Hong Kong police have used pepper spray to prevent hundreds of protesters from encircling the government headquarters, as China’s special administrative region continues to be gripped by demonstrations which began two months ago.
Demonstrators chanting “Surround government headquarters” and “Open the road,” as well as “I want true democracy,” made their way into the city’s government neighborhood of Admiralty, where scuffles with police occurred.
Protesters with wooden shields and metal barricades charged police as officers warned them to retreat.
Many in the crowd carried umbrellas, which have become a symbol of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy push, due to providing protection from pepper spray. Others had surgical masks, hard hats, goggles, and construction-style eye protectors.

Hamilton Police Under Investigation For Writing Fake Tickets | Canadian Awareness Network
Hamilton Police Under Investigation For Writing Fake Tickets | Canadian Awareness Network.
The Hamilton police ACTION (Addressing Crime Trends In Our Neighborhoods) team is described on the Hamilton police website as:
“The ACTION Team is made possible through funding obtained from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services under the Provincial Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (PAVIS). PAVIS aims to reduce illegal gang, drug and weapons activities in communities by focusing on intervention, prevention, enforcement and community mobilization.”

Police cheif Glenn DeCaire has repeatedly applauded the team for “cleaning up” the downtown core. Even though not much has changed. You can take a walk down King St. and watch drug deals out in the open on a daily basis, and the alcohol problems are just as prevelent.
Anyone who has spent any amount of time in downtown Hamilton has at least seen the ACTION team. There are days where there is as many as 8 action team officers are patroling the intersection of King St. and James St. On several of those days I had been in the area filming, had them approach me asking what I was doing and even had one officer state “I smell weed smoke, do you smoke weed?”. This kind of behavior is not out of the ordinary, I have been told by countless people that Action team officers have unjustly harrassed them.
Now the ACTION team is under investigation for writing fake tickets, to improve their numbers.

Nigerian parliamentarians scuffle with police – Africa – Al Jazeera English.
The president of Nigeria’s Senate has suspended legislative proceedings in the National Assembly until Tuesday following a scuffle between parliamentarians and police.
David Mark announced the closure on Thursday after police fired tear gas inside the parliament building.
The target of the attack seemed to be Aminu Tambuwal, speaker of the House of Representatives, who defected to the opposition last month.
Tambuwal said police had prevented him from entering the building, but a police spokesman told Al Jazeera the speaker and his entourage had been behaving in a disorderly manner by breaking through barriers and assaulting police officers on duty.
“Following an intelligence report of a likely invasion of the House of Representatives by hoodlums and thugs, the Nigeria Police Force promptly deployed its personnel to the premises to prevent a breakdown of law and order,” a police statement said.

Angry Mexicans besiege airport over students – Americas – Al Jazeera English
Angry Mexicans besiege airport over students – Americas – Al Jazeera English.
Protesters angry at the apparent massacre of 43 Mexican students have clashed with police and besieged Acapulco’s airport for hours over a scandal shaking President Enrique Pena Nieto’s administration.
Thousands of people marched to the Pacific resort town’s international airport on Monday, with parents of the students leading the demonstration along with comrades from the missing young men’s teacher-training college in the southern
state of Guerrero.
The rally followed violent protests that erupted over the weekend after authorities said gang hitmen confessed to murdering the 43 students and incinerating their bodies in September after corrupt local police handed the men over.
In a case causing national revulsion, Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam downplayed chances of ever identifying the charred remains, warning that only two bones were salvageable for DNA tests.

Police approached the man who refused to provide his details when directed, and was then arrested.

The man was charged with disobeying a direction to provide particulars under the G20 (Safety and Security) Act 2013 and obstructing police.

Roar II | The carbon pilgrim
In a nice bit of irony, the route of People’s Climate March cut through the gaudy heart of Times Square, placing protestors under the smoky gaze of two-story tall fashion models. The contrast was delicious – and intimidating. We had marched into one of the cultural epicenters of indifference toward the steep challenges of our times and the tall canyon walls all around us mocked our suddenly puny protest. Even the neon fashion models seemed to smirk. Then in a flash, the indifference was washed away by an unexpected and joyful incident involving a tour bus, of all things. It was an encounter that lifted my spirits again.
And made me think.
It happened at the intersection of 42nd street and 7th avenue where the police had temporarily halted the long line of marchers to let traffic cross. My son and I were standing near the head of the line when an open-topped, double-decker tour bus sailed into the intersection. Spying the protestors, a group of tourists in the open-top section spontaneously raised their hands and cheered a cheer of support. We cheered right back. Wow! Watching the progress of the bus, I dropped my gaze to look at a tough New York City police officer who was directing traffic. The cheering had made him smile.

Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America’s Police Forces, by Radley Balko, PublicAffairs, 2013
“There is no crueler tyranny than that which is perpetuated under the shield of law and in the name of justice.” —Charles de Montesquieu
If there was any silver lining to the horrifying events that took place in Ferguson, Missouri which riled the month of August, it has finally brought the issue of police militarization to the forefront. As outrageous as the police shooting death of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown was, the brutal law enforcement response in the form of running roughshod over the First Amendmentand resorting to quasi-martial law to mostly peaceful protests by local residents and activists was worse. To many observers, what took place in a Midwest suburb was indistinguishable from scenes out of occupied Iraq.
How did this happen? For an answer, the writings of investigative journalist Radley Balko are an invaluable resource. Perhaps more than any other person, Balko has reported substantially onpolice militarization and injustice across the country for years.
