This self-serving amnesia is particularly glaring given the U.S.’s own fire record. As of mid-July 2026, America is experiencing an above-average fire year, with 3.7 million acres burned. American fires have drifted north into Canada in previous seasons and are doing so currently from conflagrations in Washington state and Oregon, yet no Canadian legislator threatened sanctions or tariffs over it. Furthermore, the current U.S. administration’s rollback of climate protections and dismissal of climate science as a “con job” directly contribute to the very conditions that intensify fire seasons on both sides of the border. Senator Markey’s call for coordinated action is therefore more apt than ever: “Like the climate crisis, the wildfire crisis is a shared crisis. It does not respect national boundaries”.
