Winter Storms | How to Stay Warm and Survive – Survival Life | Preppers | Survival Gear | Blog

Winter Storms | How to Stay Warm and Survive – Survival Life | Preppers | Survival Gear | Blog.

The recent winter storms have left Buffalo, New York under seven feet of snow and counting.

These winter storms can be devastating. Obviously those affected have to deal with cold temperatures, snow and ice, and there’s also the risk of power outages, roofs collapsing, and even flooding once the snow melts.

People in the areas affected by these storms are sometimes unable to leave their homes for days or weeks at a time — or worse, they end up trapped in their car on the highway, like many drivers in the Dallas area experienced during last year’s winter storms.

In short, if you’re going to survive a winter storm of this magnitude, you need to be prepared.

We’ve had several posts on our site full of survival tips for winter weather. We’ve decided to compile them all in one list so that you can have a go-to place for winter storm survival.

Read on to learn more.

Understanding How Your Blood reacts To cold Is A Lifesaver | Underground Medic

Understanding How Your Blood reacts To cold Is A Lifesaver | Underground Medic.

Every winter we are bombarded by information about the cold and how to protect ourselves from it and from health issues associated with it.

Wrap up warm, keep one room heated to a minimum 18*C, avoid hypothermia, eat and drink warm food,  get the boiler serviced to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, turn off the Christmas tree lights to avoid fire. It’s endless.

Every winter in the UK upwards of 20,000 extra deaths occur that are attributed in one way, or another to the cold. These are referred to as ‘excess deaths from all causes’ on the official statistics. Now that wording makes it sound like the medics record which deaths are caused by the cold. In some cases they do, but in mostly they don’t, the figure is derived by taking the figure for the deaths recorded during non-winter months and taking it away from the winter tally, the number left is the excess deaths from all causes figure.

Now, some things that happen in winter are fully understandable and clearly lead to more deaths than would occur in drier warmer weather. Road accidents, domestic boiler incidents, house fires, drowning from falling through ice, asthma, pneumonia, falls, influenza and so on all have a higher incidence level in winter than at any other time of year.

“Pure Arctic Outbreak”: Staying Warm During the Polar Vortex |

“Pure Arctic Outbreak”: Staying Warm During the Polar Vortex |.

If you turn on the news or look at any type of social media today, the theme of the day is….Brrrrr….

That’s because most of the United States is getting hit with the first storm of the winter – and it’s a doozy.  Mac Slavo wrote about the impending deep freeze on SHTFplan:

Leading physics professor Michio Kaku, of the City University of New York, has signaled a warning concerning the polar vortex now bringing extreme cold weather to a majority of states in the U.S.

“Superstorm Nuri packs more energy than Hurricane Sandy. It’s headed our way, and we are in the bullseye. This weekend it’s going to plow into Alaska, creating fifty foot waves. Then, by midweek, all hell breaks loose. It’s going to combine with the jetstream, pushing arctic air perhaps as low as Florida,” Michio Kaku told CBS News.

“In the worst case scenario, it could mean a deep freeze. It means airlines canceling flights left and right. It means transportation being disrupted… we’re talking disruption that will peak between November 13 and November 15, but will ripple through the rest of November,” Kaku added, telling viewers to “get used to” polar vortexes, because “the earth is changing, and we’re going to see more violent swings.”

Now that your body is warm, turn your attention to warming the space about you. The goal is to feel comfortable in your home and stay warm regardless what temperature exists outside those walls.

How to Stay Warm in Winter

When you want to stay warm, or at least maintain a comfortable temperature in your home, there are a number of things you can do to stay warm without power from the grid.

They essentially fall into three categories: 1) initial design and layout, 2) immediate actions when power goes out, and 3) survival actions when power outage drags on.

Initial Design and Layout of the Home

Homes can be designed and built from the ground up to be optimized for heating and cooling in any weather. These include:
