A Scourge for Coal Miners Stages a Brutal Comeback by Ken Ward Jr.: Yale Environment 360

A Scourge for Coal Miners Stages a Brutal Comeback by Ken Ward Jr.: Yale Environment 360.

Black lung — a debilitating disease caused by inhaling coal dust — was supposed to be wiped out by a landmark 1969 U.S. mine safety law. But a recent study shows that the worst form of the disease now affects a larger share of Appalachian coal miners than at any time since the early 1970s.

by ken ward jr.

In August, when former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney visited West Virginia to campaign for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Shelley Moore Capito, the Democrat in the race was quick to remind voters what Romney had said a decade earlier about the coal industry.

“I will not create jobs or hold jobs that kill people, and that plant — that plant kills people,” Romney had said in 2003, standing outside a Massachusetts coal-fired power plant that was facing new environmental controls. The Democratic candidate’s campaign jumped on this, criticizing Capito for aligning herself with “someone who believes coal ‘kills people’” — a deeply unpopular sentiment in a state where coal has long been king.

How to Care For Wounds When the Medical System Has Collapsed

How to Care For Wounds When the Medical System Has Collapsed.

In my opinion, our medical system will be one of the first to collapse during a major catastrophe.

We have a shortage of primary care doctors in the U.S., a shortage of emergency rooms, a shortage of nurses, and most hospitals have gone to a “just in time” ordering system, where they stock two to three day’s supplies vs. several weeks.

Plus our hospitals are utterly dependent on electricity, although the all have backup diesel generators – but what happens when the diesel tanks are empty.

Furthermore, especially in an outbreak of contagious disease, many hospital personel will just not show up, be injured, or caring for ill or injured family members at home.

I can tell you from personal experience, our national medical disaster preparedness is a sad joke. Think Katrina, but ten times worse.

Study Says Home Cooking Equals Better Health: 5 Ways to Cut Kitchen Time Without Sacrificing Nutrition |

Study Says Home Cooking Equals Better Health: 5 Ways to Cut Kitchen Time Without Sacrificing Nutrition |.

Those of us who are proponents of whole foods and scratch cooking have known it all along, but a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine confirms it.  Time spent in the kitchen equals a better diet.

1319 participants in the Seattle Obesity Study answered questions about the amount of time they spend preparing food for their families each day, including prepping, cooking, and cleaning up.

  • 16% spent less than an hour a day
  • 43% spent between 1-2 hours per day
  • 41% spent more than 2 hours per day

Those who worked outside the home were less likely to spend time on food preparation. They relied on restaurant meals and convenience foods.  Those who spent more time preparing food were also more likely to consume a greater proportion of fruits and vegetables.

Many of us lead very busy lives, what with activities for the kids, work, and other obligations. This doesn’t mean that you have to say goodbye to healthy eating. There are lots of ways to cut the time spent in the kitchen while still enjoying optimum nutrition, scratch meals, and yummy produce.  When you are not in control of your food, you’re much more likely to consume additives, toxic chemicals, and GMOs. Even though I work from home, it’s rare for me to spend hours per day in the kitchen.  Here are 5 of my favorite kitchen short cuts that allow me to step away from the stove while still providing a hearty dinner for the family.

Survey Says… wind farms don’t hurt people’s health. But some people find them annoying. | – Environmental Defence.

We now have another study that confirms that there are no health impacts associated with living near wind farms.

The study, conducted by Health Canada at a cost of $2.1 million, agrees with the findings of the study by Ontario’s Medical Officer of Health, which found no “causal link between wind turbine noise and adverse health effects.” A study by the American Psychological Association  found the same. So have a myriad of other studies done over the years in multiple jurisdictions.

Health Canada’s study found that there was no relationship between wind turbines and reports of trouble sleeping, incidence of self-reported illness, stress, or quality of life.

They did, however, find that some people are annoyed by wind farms. In the language of epidemiology, the study found a correlation, but not a causal relationship, between increasing levels of wind turbine noise and “annoyance.”

Ebola: Sierra Leone Hit by Lack of Treatment Units – The Epoch Times

Ebola: Sierra Leone Hit by Lack of Treatment Units – The Epoch Times.
FREETOWN, Sierra Leone—The 7-year-old boy’s family and friends are praying over his body when the men in yellow protective suits, face shields and masks arrive. The boy had died at his home in Freetown. This same day, the collection team goes into a house for the body of another Ebola victim. Family members scream in grief as the workers put the corpse into a black body bag and carry it on a stretcher down a dirt path.

These victims, seen in video released by an international charity, died in their homes because Sierra Leone is desperately short of Ebola treatment centers more than five months after the virus came to the impoverished West African country. Of the three countries hardest hit, the epidemic is currently infecting more people in Sierra Leone.

In the past 21 days there have been 1,174 new Ebola cases in Sierra Leone, almost triple the 398 new cases in Liberia and more than quadruple the 256 new cases in Guinea, according to figures released Wednesday by the World Health Organization.

While Sierra Leone accounts for almost two-thirds of new cases, there are only an estimated 400 beds in Ebola treatment units in the whole country. The international community is slowly responding but many more lives will be lost before the level of assistance approaches the need.

99 Healthy Meals and Snacks for People Who Can’t Cook |

99 Healthy Meals and Snacks for People Who Can't Cook |.
The most common excuses I hear when people tell my why they can’t eat healthy, non-GMO food is that they “can’t” cook or that they “don’t have time” to cook.

It’s a sad disservice that our schools have decided that home economics class is no longer necessary. Whether you are male or female, the ability to put together a nourishing, tasty meal on a budget can’t be overrated. We’ve all got to eat, right? My kids have been cooking since they were 9 years old. (Uh-oh, someone call the child abuse hotline! She’s making her children slave over a hot stove!)

Anyhow, whether you can’t cook, won’t cook, don’t have time to cook, or just want some speedy solutions for busy days, here are 99 relatively healthy menu options. The list assumes that the reader has the ability to boil water, to operate a blender, to heat something up in the oven on a cookie sheet, and to use a sharp knife without injuring any digits.

Boosting Your Immune System: 6 Things You Need to Be Eating |

Boosting Your Immune System: 6 Things You Need to Be Eating |.

Do you want glowing skin, boundless energy, and a nearly super-human resistance to germs and viruses?

It’s time to step up your nutritional game. With flu season bearing down on us, we’re hearing a lot in the media about how we should be rolling up our sleeves for a toxic flu shot. Instead, perhaps we should be focused on immunity-boosting foods that will help our bodies to fight off the bugs that come knocking.  Last week, we discussed what NOT to eat, but it’s a lot more fun to think about the delicious bounty we should be consuming.

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.

~Hippocrates

There are so many wonderful nutritious whole foods out there that it would be impossible to make a comprehensive list of everything that enhances your immune system. It probably goes without saying that I strongly recommend organic, local versions of these items whenever possible. If you can’t get the food locally, the next best choice is usually frozen, since that was done at peak ripeness.  Food that was picked two weeks ago while unripe, then shipped and artificially ripened, just doesn’t have the same benefits. As well, not all of these foods are healthy for everyone. Obviously, if you’re lactose intolerant, you shouldn’t be downing a glass of raw milk. If you’re a vegetarian, look for other sources of certain nutrients. Adapt these suggestions to fit your lifestyle.

The Ebola Story Doesn’t Smell Right — Paul Craig Roberts – PaulCraigRoberts.org

The Ebola Story Doesn’t Smell Right — Paul Craig Roberts – PaulCraigRoberts.org.

The federal government has announced that thousands of additional US soldiers are being sent to Liberia. General Gary Volesky said the troops would “stamp out” ebola.
The official story is that combat troops are being sent to build treatment structures for those infected with ebola.

Why combat troops? Why not send a construction outfit such as an engineer battalion if it has to be military? Why not do what the government usually does and contract with a construction company to build the treatment units? “Additional thousands of troops” results in a very large inexperienced construction crew for 17 treatment units. It doesn’t make sense.

Stories that don’t make sense and that are not explained naturally arouse suspicions, such as: Are US soldiers being used to test ebola vaccines and cures, or more darkly are they being used to bring more ebola back to the US?

I understand why people ask these questions. The fact that they will receive no investigative answer will deepen suspicions.

Boosting Your Immune System: What NOT to Eat |

Boosting Your Immune System: What NOT to Eat |.

Tis the season for the flu shot propaganda machine to rev into high gear, as Big Pharma, the CDC, and the mainstream media urge people to roll up their sleeves and have toxins like mercury and formaldehyde injected into them, all in the name of “staying healthy this winter.”

There’s a much easier way to stay healthy that also involves toxins – the ones in our food supply. Only I recommend avoiding them instead of injecting them directly into your body.

If you consume processed foods on a regular basis, you’re forcing your immune system to work to protect you against the things you are ingesting, instead of fighting off viruses and germs.

Many people thoughtlessly poison themselves every single day. They have some white sugar and fluoride in the morning coffee. They have some MSG-laden, highly salted saturated fat at lunch and wash it down with a neurotoxic, artificially sweetened drink. Dinner gets picked up at a convenient drive-thru window, and it’s enriched with more MSG and some GMO high fructose corn syrup. Don’t even get me started on that late night snack in front of the TV. Most of what typical Americans eat can hardly even be considered actual food.

UN officials ‘shocked’ by Detroit’s mass water shutoffs | Al Jazeera America

UN officials ‘shocked’ by Detroit’s mass water shutoffs | Al Jazeera America.

Surrounded by a frenzy of cameras, Detroit resident Rochelle McCaskill explained her predicament to a team of United Nations officials on Sunday: The numbers simply didn’t add up.

Out of her $672 monthly disability check, McCaskill spends $600 rent, she said, leaving her unable to pay the city’s water bills, which have skyrocketed to more than twice the national average.

“They need a category for those of us who cannot pay,” said McCaskill, whose water was shut off this summer as part of a wave of disconnections that, block by block, have left thousands of city residents without running water.

The city turned off McCaskill’s water despite the fact that she had been paying down her $540.10 water bill in increments and that she suffers from MRSA, a contagious infection that the NIH considers a “serious public health concern” and requires frequent bathing.

When it comes to food packaging, what we don’t know could hurt us | Ensia

When it comes to food packaging, what we don’t know could hurt us | Ensia.

It’s almost impossible to imagine life without flexible, transparent and water-resistant food packaging, without plastic sandwich bags, cling film or shelves filled with plastic jars, tubs and tubes, and durable bags and boxes.

While storing food in containers dates back thousands of years, and food has been sold in bottles since the 1700s and cans since the 1800s, what might be considered the modern age of food packaging began in the 1890s when crackers were first sold in sealed waxed paper bags inside a paperboard box. Plastics and other synthetics began to appear in the 1920s and ’30s, shortly after chemical companies started experimenting with petroleum-based compounds and pioneering new materials that could be used for household as well as industrial applications.

Fast forward to 2014: Upwards of 6,000 different manufactured substances are now listed by various government agencies as approved for use in food contact materials in the U.S. and Europe — materials that can legally go into consumer food packaging, household and commercial food containers, food processing equipment, and other products.
