Scuffles break out as Hong Kong clears part of protest site | Reuters.
(Reuters) – Scuffles erupted after Hong Kong authorities cleared part of a pro-democracy protest camp in the bustling district of Mong Kok on Tuesday following a court order to reopen a road, with several demonstrators taken away in police vans.
The gritty, working-class area across the harbor from the main protest site at Admiralty has been the scene of some of the most violent clashes during two months of pro-democracy demonstrations in the Chinese-ruled city.
Hundreds of police stood guard as authorities enforced the court order to reopen Argyle Street to free up traffic. There was little resistance until the afternoon when police, some in rows with arms linked, faced off with protesters, several of whom were forcibly removed.

Hong Kong Umbrella Movement Day 52 Live Stream and Blog Updates.
HONG KONG—Police began moving in Tuesday morning to clear out metal barricades, tents, and protesters from a section of road outside a shopping mall and office building near Hong Kong’s government complex, executing orders the High Court handed down recently.
But they were quickly stymied by pro-democracy protesters and their lawyer, former legislator Albert Ho. He successfully argued that the injunction should not extend to the whole area as originally anticipated.
The operation is the first time in weeks that the Hong Kong government has moved against the pro-democracy activists, as the standoff over the right for Hong Kong people to freely elect their leaders enters its eighth week.

Chinese Leader Xi Jinping Says Hong Kong’s Occupy Movement Is Illegal
Chinese Leader Xi Jinping Says Hong Kong’s Occupy Movement Is Illegal.
HONG KONG—Xi Jinping, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, has for the last six weeks been relatively quiet about the pro-democracy students and activists that have flooded streets in Hong Kong, calling for free and open elections.
He departed from that quiet on Wednesday, saying that the occupy movement in Hong Kong is an “illegal incident.”
“We resolutely support the government of the Special Administrative Region dealing with the matter according to law, protecting Hong Kong’s social stability, and safeguarding the safety of the Hong Kong people and their property,” he said in a joint press conference with President Barack Obama, held after the APEC meetings in Beijing on Nov. 12.

China Fake Invoice Evidence Mounts as HK Figures Diverge – Bloomberg
China Fake Invoice Evidence Mounts as HK Figures Diverge – Bloomberg.
The gap between China’s reported exports to Hong Kong and the territory’s imports from the mainland widened in September to the most this year, suggesting fake export-invoicing is again skewing China’s trade data.
China recorded $1.56 of exports to Hong Kong last month for every $1 in imports Hong Kong registered, leading to a $13.5 billion difference, according to government data compiled by Bloomberg. Hong Kong’s imports from China climbed 5.5 percent from a year earlier to $24.1 billion, figures showed yesterday; China’s exports to Hong Kong surged 34 percent to $37.6 billion, according to mainland data on Oct. 13.
While China’s government has strict rules on importing capital, those seeking to exploit yuan appreciation can evade the limit by disguising money inflows as payment for goods exported to foreign countries or territories, especially Hong Kong. The latest trade mismatch coincided with renewed appreciation of China’s currency, leading analysts at banks and brokerages including Everbright Securities Co. and Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. to question the export surge.

Hong Kong protesters march after fruitless talks with government | Reuters
Hong Kong protesters march after fruitless talks with government | Reuters.
(Reuters) – About 200 Hong Kong protesters marched to the home of the city’s Beijing-backed leader on Wednesday to push their case for greater democracy a day after talks between student leaders and senior officials failed to break the deadlock.
Others continued to occupy main streets in the Chinese-controlled city, where they have camped for nearly a month in protest against a central government plan that would give Hong Kong people the chance to vote for their own leader in 2017 but tightly restrict the candidates to Beijing loyalists.
A wide chasm separates the protesters and the government, which has labelled their actions illegal and repeatedly said their demand for open nominations is impossible under the laws of the former British colony.

Why Chinese Growth Forecasts Just Crashed To A Paltry 3.9% – And Are Going Even Lower – In One | ZeroHedge
Up until a few years ago, conventional wisdom was that China would grow at nearly double digits as long as the eye could see. Then, however, something happened, and China’s 9% growth became 8%, then 7% and even lower, as suddenly the Politburo made it quite clear China would not chase growth at any cost, especially when the cost is trillions in bad debt and other NPLs, as we have explained time and again. The collapse in Chinese growth expectations is shown best on the following formerly hockeysticking chart of IMF’s revised Chinese growth projections which has completely collapsed in the past few years.

Protesters in Hong Kong have reoccupied the Mong Kok site, a key zone in the heart of the city, after police had cleared the area on Friday, sparking some of the most violent confrontations since the demonstrations began three weeks ago.
On Saturday, police used batons and pepper spray against protesters who were shielding themselves with umbrellas on the central district, but were forced into a partial retreat as the sun began to rise, to cheers from the crowd. …click on the link above for the rest of the article… |
