Adelaide Hills bushfires: Crews racing to contain blaze before high temperatures hit

Adelaide Hills bushfires: Crews racing to contain blaze before high temperatures hit

Hundreds of firefighters are racing to contain a blaze burning out of control north-east of Adelaide, with temperatures set to soar today.

Authorities said more than 375 firefighters from South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales would work on securing the 240-kilometre perimeter of the bushfire that has already burnt more than 12,000 hectares.

The Country Fire Service (CFS) warned the next 48 hours would be crucial to firefighting efforts due to the higher temperatures.

“Today we will see easterly winds coming through and by mid-afternoon, 4:00pm, we’re going to be back to 36 degrees [Celsius],” CFS state coordinator Brenton Eden said.

“We’ve got to get through Tuesday and Wednesday and see no increase in the perimeter of this fire.”

Active fires in inaccessible terrain in the south-western corner and most southern point of the fire were causing the most concern for crews.

“We just do not want this fire to go any further south. It then starts to impact on a whole new scenario,” Mr Eden said.

The CFS has a record number of 31 aircraft at its disposal today, which will be dispersed across South Australia to manage the fire risk.

Adelaide Hills bushfires: Specialist teams sent in to assess damage as crews continue to battle blaze – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

Specialist teams are racing against time to assess areas damaged by bushfires in the Adelaide Hills today as fire crews prepare for deteriorating weather conditions expected to hit again on Wednesday.

Fire crews will be sent in to burnt-out areas of the Adelaide Hills to assess the damage caused by the Sampson Flat bushfire, which continues to burn out of control.

South Australia Police have now confirmed 13 homes have been destroyed in the fire, one more than previously thought, but that number is expected to rise to more than 30.

Premier Jay Weatherill said there were more than 1,100 properties in the fire-affected area and authorities expected to have a better idea of the damage tally later today.

Crews were focusing on protecting pockets of homes at greatest risk, including by conducting back-burning operations.

Live: SA faces most dangerous day since Ash Wednesday as ‘incredibly dangerous’ bushfire burns NE of Adelaide; crews battle blazes in Victoria – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

Firefighters in South Australia and Victoria are battling out-of-control bushfires, with warnings today’s conditions in the Adelaide Hills are the worst since Ash Wednesday more than 30 years ago.

A huge bushfire at Sampson Flat in the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges north-east of Adelaide has already destroyed homes and is expected to turn south fanned by winds of up to 110 kilometres per hour. A major emergency has been declared.

Meanwhile, temperatures are forecast to reach above 40 degrees Celsius in Victoria, hampering conditions for firefighters battling a fire which is threatening Maroona in the state’s west.
