Winter is Coming

WINTER IS COMING

“Summer will end soon enough, and childhood as well.” – George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones

“Reflect on what happens when a terrible winter blizzard strikes. You hear the weather warning but probably fail to act on it. The sky darkens. Then the storm hits with full fury, and the air is a howling whiteness. One by one, your links to the machine age break down. Electricity flickers out, cutting off the TV. Batteries fade, cutting off the radio. Phones go dead. Roads become impassible, and cars get stuck. Food supplies dwindle. Day to day vestiges of modern civilization – bank machines, mutual funds, mass retailers, computers, satellites, airplanes, governments – all recede into irrelevance.

Picture yourself and your loved ones in the midst of a howling blizzard that lasts several years. Think about what you would need, who could help you, and why your fate might matter to anybody other than yourself. That is how to plan for a saecular winter. Don’t think you can escape the Fourth Turning. History warns that a Crisis will reshape the basic social and economic environment that you now take for granted.” – Strauss & Howe The Fourth Turning

I’m always a little behind when it comes to popular TV, especially when the shows are on premium cable channels. Being cheap, I’ve refused to pay for any premium cable channels, plus I’ve spent much of my life on baseball fields and in hockey rinks, rather than watching TV. When my kids recently signed up for HBO Now, I finally got to watch The Sopranos, eleven years after its final episode aired. Now I’m finally able to watch Game of Thrones, after it has been on the air for seven seasons. In the opening episodes I was impressed by the theme which permeates the series. Numerous characters stated “Winter is Coming”. I was immediately struck by the parallels with the Fourth Turning theory about the cyclical nature of our world.

U.S. Oil Supply To Fall Faster Than Expected

U.S. Oil Supply To Fall Faster Than Expected

Key package of statistics released on U.S. oil and gas activity this week, from the national Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

And one number in particular stood out. Showing how drilling activity in key U.S. plays is declining at an unprecedented pace.

That figure is the number of unused drilling permits on federal and tribal lands across America. Which the BLM said hit a record high during the fiscal year 2015.

According to BLM statistics, there are now 7,500 inactive drilling permits issued to oil and gas operators (6,100 permits on federal lands and another 1,400 on tribal lands under BLM purview). With these licenses currently sitting idle while operators wait to see if they want to indeed take up their rights to explore and develop.

BLM officials noted that’s the highest total ever seen for inactive drilling permits. With the current 7,500 unused permits equating to about four years’ worth of drilling activity, at current average drilling rates across the country.

One interesting point is that the negative turn in drilling appears to have happened quite recently. With the BLM noting that new permits issued during fiscal 2015 actually increased as compared to 2014 — with 4,228 permits being issued in the past year alone, up 10 percent from the previous year.

That suggests E&Ps were still relatively bullish in 2015 — pursuing new lands for lease in order to grow their inventory of drilling opportunities.

But the reality on the ground has obviously proven much different than expectations. With the big jump in unused permits showing that few oil and gas firms have been willing to actually set aside budgets for drilling new lands.

Of course, this has big implications for production. Which is now falling at almost all major plays across the U.S. It also suggests that things could ramp up relatively quickly if oil and gas prices recover, spurring E&Ps to drill down on their inventory.

The War Against the Cowboys: The Oregon stand off and US imperialism

The War Against the Cowboys: The Oregon stand off and US imperialism

As our old republic fades into history, replaced by a voracious global Empire, the division between foreign policy and domestic policy is erased. A conquistador treats his helots on the home front with the same contempt he has for his subjects abroad. In both cases, conquest and subjugation is the goal – and rebellion is the inevitable result.

Just as the people of Iraq rose up and finally threw out the American occupiers, so the people in the American West are rising up against their federal overlords. This is the reason for the occupation of a federal facility in Burns, Oregon, where hundreds of protesters rallied against the jailing of ranchers Dwight Hammond and his son Steve.

The Hammond case has become a cause celebre West of the Mississippi, where federal control of huge swathes of real estate has become a life and death issue for ranchers and others who make their living off the land. As the feds encroach on their livelihood, they are pushing back, and nothing illustrates this better than the Hammond case.

In 2001, the Hammonds started a controlled burn on their own land to eliminate invasive junipers from ruining grazing for cattle: the fire spread to neighboring federal lands. As the Tri-State Livestock News reports:

“The first fire, in 2001, was a planned burn on Hammonds’ own property to reduce juniper trees that have become invasive in that part of the country. That fire burned outside the Hammonds’ private property line and took in 138 acres of unfenced BLM land before the Hammonds got it put out. No BLM firefighters were needed to help extinguish the fire and no fences were damaged.

“’They called and got permission to light the fire,’ Dwight’s wife, Susan, said, adding that was customary for ranchers conducting range management burns – a common practice in the area.

Activist Post: New World Order Sustains Uncomfortable Setbacks in 2014

Activist Post: New World Order Sustains Uncomfortable Setbacks in 2014.

Looking back to 2014, I was thinking to myself, what theme summarized the year from a truth and freedom-seeking perspective? Could we pin down one common theme for the year?

Obviously many significant events occurred so I wondered, could we narrow these key events to one theme. Then it occurred to me, there was a clear-cut theme if you consider several memorable moments of the year and line them up side by side.

I recalled the April Bundy Ranch standoff where Senator Harry Reid got caught making secret business deals with the Chinese for land in Clark County, Nevada; and how this deal would be directly tied to the federal government’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) attempted land-grab of the Bundy Ranch estate. I recalled how the BLM showed up with SWAT teams, military equipment and helicopters, and even slaughtered innocent cattle and shut down cell lines as payback for unpaid fees they tried to illegally extort from the Bundy family.
