If you live in an area where temperatures dip quickly and often during the winter months, you know how hard it can be to keep your home warm; especially when the outside temperatures drop below zero!

We actually live in an area that gets to -20 during the winter months. Luckily, we have yet to experience that this year, however, we have gotten several degrees below zero. Sometimes, your wood-burning stove and electric or propane heaters have a tough time keeping up and your bill to use those goes sky high! So here are some tips to stay warm when it gets unbearable cold.

Heavy Curtains

Heavy curtains will block a lot of the cool air and keep it from hitting you. When it gets cold, even with high-quality windows, you can feel the cold coming off the glass just walking by. Using heavy curtains helps keep this chill from taking over your whole house. Usually, this is something I would do during the night to help it feel warmer. But if you have a really cold day, keep those curtains closed until the sunlight hits the windows.

While some air particles will be able to move through the gaps in a curtain, many of them will encounter resistance – just like wind blowing against a ship’s sail. Even if the air immediately beside the window cools considerably if it doesn’t have the opportunity to mix with the warm air in the rest of the room, you won’t notice – and neither will your energy bills.

Layering Clothes Effectively To Stay Warm Outside In Winter

Layering Clothes Effectively To Stay Warm Outside In Winter

Layering your clothing is one of the best ways to stay warm.  Anyone who works outside or has chores around the house to take care of in the winter months understands the importance of keeping the body warm so it can operate at optimal levels.

Layering your clothing comes with many benefits, including the ability to remove one or two items of clothing if you begin to feel a bit warm and overdressed. This makes you more prepared for any possible weather outcome, writes Mountain Warehouse. When you’re doing a combination of activities such as standing, walking, sitting, going outside and inside and back outside again, your body regulates its temperature very differently. This is ideal for people who do a lot of their chores outdoors! Layering allows you to be comfortable throughout the day as your body temperature and activity level change.

But just how does this technique work to keep a person warm? Layering clothing works by trapping warm air created by your own body heat in between the many layers of clothing. That trapped warm air acts like a layer of insulation for your body. Especially in winter, because that’s when it’s much colder, keeping your core warm is a key to good health, because this is the area that generates heat for your vital organs. Those organs need your body heat to function properly.

The University of Health Services in Madison Wisconsin writes that the basics of layering include four layers.

  • Base: a thin layer that fits your body. It works to wick away any sweat and moisture that would otherwise suck up your body heat.
  • Mid: your normal outfit, whether that’s a long sleeved shirt or sweater.

How To Stay Warm in a Long-Term SHTF Event

How To Stay Warm in a Long-Term SHTF Event

As well-informed readers, you know the world situation does not appear to be improving.  At any time, we could well find ourselves in the middle of a SHTF event…be it economic collapse, a nuclear attack, or a string of natural disasters.  Regarding this last item, the steady string of hurricanes bringing a deadly swath of death and destruction to the United States has been happening as we speak.  The unmentioned problem: we’re on the “butt” end of winter, and as such, you’ll have to take extra precautions in the event it hits the fan.

10 Ways to Stay Warm in a Long-Term SHTF Event

This is going to be a very specific list; however, it is not exhaustive.  There will always be more to add, and there is never enough: that’s the bottom line.  This will get you started on your checklist, either physical or mental to ready your preparations before the winter hits.

  1. Warm clothing: and plenty of it. Gore-Tex top and bottoms are an absolute necessity, and plenty of warm socks, thermal underwear, and good boots that are waterproof, have plenty of Thinsulate and good soles, and give good ankle support.
  2. Sleeping bag, Gore-Tex cover, and sleeping pad: Remember to go for the best in terms of quality and performance. Another essential in this regard is a good compression bag and a wet-weather bag.  A soaking wet sleeping bag is not fun.  Stay warm, dry, and insulated from the conduction of lying on the ground.
  3. Plenty of hand warmers: Why? Because if you’re going to give an IV in the middle of the winter, you want to warm up the bag, that’s why.  Because you may need to thaw something out and not be able to light a fire due to operational security reasons.

Selco: How to Stay Warm During a Long-Term SHTF Situation

Selco: How to Stay Warm During a Long-Term SHTF Situation

As America is dealing with a record-breaking cold snap and a weird storm hitting the East Coast, some folks are having to handle the whole thing with the power out also. But we all know that at least this time, our situation is temporary. Most of us have power, and those who don’t will have it restored within a few days. But what if you had to stay warm during a long-term SHTF situation?

After your warm response to Selco’s story about Christmas during the SHTF in Bosnia, I hired him to start writing for us more often. Today, he shares with us what it was like to try and stay warm during an entire year in a war zone without any type of utilities. It’s a lot of information, and we can apply this to our preps.

Selco’s information is incredibly valuable because he has actually been through what we plan for during our preparedness endeavors. He teaches this information in-depth on his website, SHTF School.  Let’s get started.

The US is dealing with quite a cold snap right now, and it got me thinking about your SHTF year in Bosnia. First of all, what is the winter like there? How cold does it get and what is the climate?

In a small part of the country close to Adriatic sea it is Mediterranean climate with mild winters and temperatures then goes just below 0 or -5 Celsius (32-23 Fahrenheit) and in other parts of country it is a Continental climate with temperatures during the winter -10 or -18 (14-5 Fahrenheit), with cold waves down to -26 (-15 Fahrenheit) and a lot of snow.

Very usual are periods of strong cold wind (Bora) that actually can lower your body temperature very fast and complicate things.

“Pure Arctic Outbreak”: Staying Warm During the Polar Vortex |

“Pure Arctic Outbreak”: Staying Warm During the Polar Vortex |.

If you turn on the news or look at any type of social media today, the theme of the day is….Brrrrr….

That’s because most of the United States is getting hit with the first storm of the winter – and it’s a doozy.  Mac Slavo wrote about the impending deep freeze on SHTFplan:

Leading physics professor Michio Kaku, of the City University of New York, has signaled a warning concerning the polar vortex now bringing extreme cold weather to a majority of states in the U.S.

“Superstorm Nuri packs more energy than Hurricane Sandy. It’s headed our way, and we are in the bullseye. This weekend it’s going to plow into Alaska, creating fifty foot waves. Then, by midweek, all hell breaks loose. It’s going to combine with the jetstream, pushing arctic air perhaps as low as Florida,” Michio Kaku told CBS News.

“In the worst case scenario, it could mean a deep freeze. It means airlines canceling flights left and right. It means transportation being disrupted… we’re talking disruption that will peak between November 13 and November 15, but will ripple through the rest of November,” Kaku added, telling viewers to “get used to” polar vortexes, because “the earth is changing, and we’re going to see more violent swings.”

Now that your body is warm, turn your attention to warming the space about you. The goal is to feel comfortable in your home and stay warm regardless what temperature exists outside those walls.

How to Stay Warm in Winter

When you want to stay warm, or at least maintain a comfortable temperature in your home, there are a number of things you can do to stay warm without power from the grid.

They essentially fall into three categories: 1) initial design and layout, 2) immediate actions when power goes out, and 3) survival actions when power outage drags on.

Initial Design and Layout of the Home

Homes can be designed and built from the ground up to be optimized for heating and cooling in any weather. These include:
