Yale Study Unveils Asteroid Strikes As Possible Trigger for Earth’s Ice Ages

Yale Study Unveils Asteroid Strikes As Possible Trigger for Earth’s Ice Ages

Snowball Earth Concept

A Yale-led research team has proposed that large asteroid impacts could have abruptly triggered “Snowball” Earth periods, where the planet was encased in ice, resolving a long-standing debate about these dramatic climate shifts. Their study, using sophisticated climate models, suggests that under certain cold climate conditions, an asteroid strike could tip Earth into a global glaciation state within a decade. Recent research argues that asteroid impacts may have triggered widespread ice ages in Earth’s ancient history.

Yale-led research team has picked a side in the “Snowball Earth” debate over the possible cause of planet-wide deep freeze events that occurred in the distant past.

According to a new study, these so-called “Snowball” Earth periods, in which the planet’s surface was covered in ice for thousands or even millions of years, could have been triggered abruptly by large asteroids that slammed into the Earth.

The findings, detailed in the journal Science Advances, may answer a question that has stumped scientists for decades about some of the most dramatic known climate shifts in Earth’s history. In addition to Yale, the study included researchers from the University of Chicago and the University of Vienna.

The Threat of an Ice Age is Real

The Threat of an Ice Age is Real

Most people have NEVER heard of the Beaufort Gyre, a massive wind-driven current in the Arctic Ocean that actually has far more influence over sea ice than anything we can throw into the atmosphere. The Beaufort Gyre has been regulating climate and sea ice formation for millennia. Recently, however, something has changed; it is not something that would create global warming but threatens a new Ice Age.

There is a normal cycle that appears to be about 5.4 years where it reverses direction and spins counter-clockwise, expelling ice and freshwater into the eastern Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic. The 5.4-year cycle is interesting for it is two pi cycle intervals of 8.6. The immediate cycle has suddenly expanded to two 8.6-year intervals, bringing it to 17.2 years as we head into 2022.

What you must understand is that this Beaufort Gyre now holds as much freshwater as all of the Great Lakes combined. Why is that important? Saltwater freezes at a lower temperature than the 32 degrees F at which freshwater freezes. The difference between the air temperature and the freezing point of saltwater is bigger than the difference between the air temperature and the freezing point of fresh water. This makes the ice with salt on it melt faster, which is why we salt the roads in an ice storm.

Now, think of the Beaufort Gyre as a carousel of ice and freshwater. Because it is now spinning both faster and in its usual clockwise direction, it has been collecting more and more freshwater from the three main sources:

  1. Melting sea ice
  2. Runoff from the Arctic Ocean from Russian and North American rivers
  3. Lower saltwater coming in from the Bering Sea

When the Ice Will be Gone: The Greatest Change Seen on Earth in 30 Million Years.

When the Ice Will be Gone: The Greatest Change Seen on Earth in 30 Million Years.

An image from the 2006 movie “The Meltdown,” the second of the “Ice Ages” series. These movies attempted to present a picture of Earth during the Pleistocene. Of course, they were not supposed to be paleontology classes, but they did show the megafauna of the time (mammoths, sabertooth tigers, and others) and the persistent ice, as you see in the figure. The plot of “The Meltdown” was based on a real event: the breakdown of the ice dam that kept the Lake Agassiz bonded inside the great glaciers of the Laurentide, in the North American continent. When the dam broke, some 15,000 years ago, the lake flowed into the sea in a giant flood that changed Earth’s climate for more than a thousand years. So, the concept of ice ages as related to climate change is penetrating the human memesphere. It is strange that it is happening just when the human activity is pushing the ecosystem back to a pre-glacial period. If it happens, it will be the greatest change seen on Earth in 30 million years

We all know that there is permanent ice at Earth’s poles: it forms glaciers and it covers huge areas of the sea. But is it there by chance, or is it functional in some way to Earth’s ecosphere?

Perhaps the first to ask this question was James Lovelock, the proposer (together with Lynn Margulis) of the concept of “Gaia” — the name for the great holobiont that regulates the planetary ecosystem. Lovelock has always been a creative person and in his book “Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth”  (1979) he reversed the conventional view of ice as a negative entity. Instead, he proposed that the permanent ice at the poles was part of the planetary homeostasis, actually optimizing the functioning of the ecosphere.

Are we Headed into Another Ice Age?

Our model has projected we are entering another “grand-minimum,” which will overtake the sun beginning in 2020 and will last through the 2050s, resulting in diminished magnetism, infrequent sunspot production, and less ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaching Earth. This all means we are facing a global cooling period in the planet that may span 31 to 43 years. The last grand-minimum event produced the mini-Ice Age in the mid-17th century. Known as the Maunder Minimum, it occurred between 1645 and 1715, during a longer span of time when parts of the world became so cold that the period was called the Little Ice Age, which lasted from about 1300 to 1850.

If Gates blocks the sun as he has been suggesting off-camera, we are looking at not just the reduction of population by 70%, but all life. Gates is surprised about how he and Fauci are the #1 targets. This again only shows his elitist position. Others have used a Deep Learning AI program that can only do one dimension. Nevertheless, applying it to sunspots they interestingly arrived at a similar forecast — Gates & Schwab are DEAD WRONG!

It has been Klaus’ main man in Washington, John Kerry, who is leading the charge on changing the economy entirely. He told coal miners to make solar panels instead, indicative of these elitists who think people can just work like drones. There is no consideration that the miners would have to sell their homes and move near a factor that makes solar panels if they are even hiring. If people do not enjoy what they do, they will never do it well. We all can’t be brain surgeons, a quarterback, or a programmer. We all have different talents and callings. Kerry knows nothing about humanity. You can see he has the same mentality as the Communists. The next job opening is a trash collector — you are next in line.

Do We Face Global Cooling or an Ice Age?

Do We Face Global Cooling or an Ice Age?

QUESTION #1: You expect global cooling due to the decrease in solar energy. Why do glaciers melt?

MG

QUESTION #2: Now that the Greenland Glacier is growing, is this part of the shift back toward global cooling? Do you think we are headed to an ice age?

FH

ANSWER: There appears to be a 20-year cycle in the Arctic to begin with. The mere fact that at times the Northwest Passage has been ice-free and ice blocked proves there is a cycle to absolutely everything. The Arctic has not always been frozen. There are documented accounts from 1817 when the ice melted. The point is nature functions in a cyclical manner — hello, remember four seasons?

I do NOT believe we are heading into an “Ice Age” of such a dramatic duration. All the data clearly shows that we are in a declining trend with each warming peak being less than the former. Anyone who thinks humans have caused this last warming period just listens to propaganda and ignores all the historical evidence. There is ABSOLUTELY no period in history absent of a cycle — NONE!!!!

From an objective and unbiased view, yes, we will see a cooling period. However, this will most likely be just a retest of the last low of the Little Ice Age. I would not speculate on an Ice Age coming, just a swing downward in temperature enough to cause us a lot of inconveniences.

The Greenland Glacier is growing again at the edges because the water is colder. That seems to be in line with the downturn in the energy output of the sun since 2015. The global cooling puts food production at risk. Sure, there are those who just refuse to believe this since global warming has become a religion. The herd may be thinned for their propaganda will ensure they are unprepared for food shortages.

Aurora Borealis Warning the Climate May Turn Sharply Colder into 2032

Aurora Borealis Warning the Climate May Turn Sharply Colder into 2032

There may actually be a confirmation that we are heading into a much colder climate. The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, can now be seen in the UK. Normally, the Northern Lights can be seen only extremely north as in Alaska. Sir Edmund Halley (1656 – 1742), the man who discovered Halley’s Comet, was a friend of Isaac Newton. He was asked to speak about the unusual events that were taking place in the sky. He addressed the British Royal Society, stating:

The Royal Society, having received accounts from very many parts of Great Britain, of the unusual lights which have of late appeared in the heavens ; were pleased to signify their desires to me, that I should draw up a general resation (sic) of the fact, and explain more at large some conceptions of mine I had proposed to them about it, as seeming to some of them to render a tollerable [sic] solution of the very strange and surprizing [sic] phænomena thereof.

During the period of Halley’s investigation, the Little Ice Age dominated the decades and it bottomed around 1680. The Aurora Borealis actually expands and moves further south during periods of a colder climate. The Northern Lights being visible in the UK is not a good sign for climate change. This may be warning that we are headed back to a prolonged colder climate. Solar cycle 14 had the record high for sunspots during February in 1906. The annual peak took place in 1957 with 190 sunspots taking place that year. Based upon our models, the ideal low was most likely 1686/1687. From the 1957 high, the collapse to just 10 sunspots per year took place in 1964 — 7 years later.

Just before the Mini Ice Age, sunspot activity peaked during 1787 at 132 (mean) and crashed for 11 years into 1798, dropping to just 4 sunspots. If we continue to witness this declining trend from the 2000 high where there are virtually no sunspots, we appear to be vulnerable to a significant decline at least into 2032.

At Last – Solar Minimum Discussions Begin

At Last – Solar Minimum Discussions Begin

COMMENT: Mr. Armstrong; You are the only one with your computer that has correctly forecast the weather years in advance. I understand these are not some premonition of you on a personal level. That means putting the major trends together as you do actually produce results.

My hat’s off to you.

Cheers from bitterly cold UK

NG

REPLY: It is amazing to me that we are still in the Stone Age when it comes to forecasting even weather. You are correct. This is NOT based upon a personal intuition or opinion. I am merely reporting what the computer is forecasting and why. Sorry, nobody speaks to me in my dreams or anything. I cannot even pretend that my opinion is better than someone else’s. There is no room for personal opinions in such matters.

Nevertheless, at last, there are people finally starting to talk about solar minimum and the DEEP FREEZE. There has been extremely cold weather, a WARNING that is finally being heard. Solar minimum has ARRIVED and could last for more than a DECADE, as many are starting to warn. The problem with this reality is that weather is impacted by Mother Nature. Then people like Alexandria OcasioCortez demand higher taxes to create her Green New Deal outlawing air travel. Even the National Geographic is starting to remember the Deep Freeze of 1709. Even the BBC was forecasting a Deep Freeze. Others were calling it the “‘Beast from the East’ to plunge Europe into a historic deep freeze.”

Earth’s ‘Big Freeze’ Approaches As Sun Remains Devoid Of Sunspots For Most Of 2018

Earth’s ‘Big Freeze’ Approaches As Sun Remains Devoid Of Sunspots For Most Of 2018

Scientists believe that Earth could experience a “big freeze” as the sun goes through what’s known as “solar minimum.” During this time, sunspots are minimal and the globe could be in for a wicked cold snap.

Scientists are reporting that the sun has been free of sunspots for a total of 133 days this year, according to The Express UK. With only 241 days of 2018 passing, that means the sun has been blank for the majority of the year. Experts continue to warn that this is a sign that the solar minimum is on its way. “The sun is spotless again. For the 133rd day this year, the face of the sun is blank,” wrote the website Space Weather.Solar minimum has returned, bringing extra cosmic rays, long-lasting holes in the sun’s atmosphere, and strangely pink auroras,” the website continued.

The sun follows a cycle of roughly 11 years where it reaches a solar maximum and then a solar minimum. During a solar maximum, the sun gives off more heat and solar particles and is littered with sunspots. Less heat in a solar minimum is due to a decrease in the sun’s magnetic waves.  Our sun was not expected to head into a solar minimum until around 2020, but it appears to be heading in that direction a little early which could prove to be bad news for warm weather lovers.

But a prolonged solar minimum could mean a “mini ice age.” The last time there was a prolonged solar minimum, it did, in fact, lead to a mini ice-age which was scientifically known as the Maunder minimum.  That little cold snap lasted for 70 years between the years 1645 and 1715. During this period, temperatures dropped globally by 1.3 degrees Celsius leading to shorter seasons and ultimately food shortages.

The planet’s inexorable warming means there will be no new ice age for at least the next 100,000 years, scientists say.

LONDON, 18 January, 2016 – Human beings have not just started to leave a unique geological stratum that will announce their existence long after the species has been extinguished. They may have altered a climate cycle that has been stable for millions of years and even cancelled – or certainly postponed – the next Ice Age.

Andrey Ganopolski and colleagues from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany report in Nature that they took a look at the conditions that determined the geologically recent cycle of Ice Ages.

The advance and retreat of vast glaciers over geological time are the consequence of a mix of factors involving sea, mountains, atmosphere, vegetation and the distribution of continents around the globe.

But ultimately what determines the rhythm of these events is what climate scientists call insolation: how much sun the Earth actually gets in a summer. The Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle but an ellipse, and the shape of the ellipse and the angle of the Earth’s tilt on its axis change subtly and imperceptibly over cycles lasting tens of thousands of years, which in turn alters the amount of sunshine striking the northern hemisphere.

And if the atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide are not high when the total insolation is near its lowest point, great thick sheets of ice begin to advance over Europe, Asia and North America.

This is enough to explain the last eight Ice Ages. The sequence is punctuated by “interglacials” that tend to last roughly 10,000 years before the ice advances once more.

Geoengineering Is Being Pushed By Politicians and Scientists … But It May Do MORE HARM THAN GOOD

Geoengineering Is Being Pushed By Politicians and Scientists … But It May Do MORE HARM THAN GOOD

Scientists Suggested Melting the Arctic Ice Cap to Stop a New Ice Age

Proposals to use geoengineering to fight global warming are in the news.   Indeed, humans have been intentionally modifying weather for climate control for decades.  But geoengineering has not always been thought of as a way to fight global warming

In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, scientists and presidents considered geoengineering to stop a new iceage and create more warming.

On April 28, 1975, Newsweek wrote an article stating:

Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects. They concede that some of the more spectacular solutions proposed, such as melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers, might create problems far greater than those they solve. But the scientists see few signs that government leaders anywhere are even prepared to take the simple measures of stockpiling food or of introducing the variables of climatic uncertainty into economic projections of future food supplies. The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality.

Here is a reprint of the article in the Washington Times, and here is a copy of the 1975 Newsweek article.

Why were scientists considering melting the arctic ice cap?

Because they were worried about a new ice age.

A Mammoth Enigma | Energy Matters

A Mammoth Enigma | Energy Matters.

During the depths of the last glaciation hundreds of Wooly Mammoths died and froze quickly sometimes with food in their mouths. The beasts became entombed in bogs that froze solid and remain frozen today in the East Siberian permafrost. (Image Wikipedia)

Why were there bogs in East Siberia during the depths of the last glaciation? And why has the permafrost not thawed during 10,000 years of Holocene interglacial?

That is the Mammoth Enigma.

In searching the internet for information to answer this enigma I was surprised to find little concrete data and that web sources on this subject are dominated by creationist views.

My initial interest on this topic was spawned by a TV documentary describing a remarkably well preserved specimen called Yuka with real Mammoth blood. Enter Stephen Spielberg with the script for Pleistocene Park. It does seem plausible that we see a mammoth clone one day.

Old, cold and bold: Ice Age people dwelled high in Peru’s Andes | Reuters.

(Reuters) – In a bleak, treeless landscape high in the southern Peruvian Andes, bands of intrepid Ice Age people hunkered down in rudimentary dwellings and withstood frigid weather, thin air and other hardships.

Scientists on Thursday described the world’s highest known Ice Age settlements, two archaeological sites about 2.8 miles (4.5 km) above sea level and about 12,000 years old packed with artifacts including a rock shelter, stone tools, animal bones, food remnants and primitive artwork.

“What this tells us is that hunter-gatherers were capable of colonizing a very extreme environment, the high Andes, despite the challenges at the end of the Ice Age,” said archaeologist Kurt Rademaker of Germany’s University of Tübingen, who led the study published in the journal Science.
