Powerful Earthquake Hits Afghanistan, Pakistan, India

Powerful Earthquake Hits Afghanistan, Pakistan, India

Things are “shifting” in the Hindu Kush – literally.

Just months after back-to-back quakes hit Nepal killing thousands, a powerful earthquake shook northeast Afghanistan on Monday. Tremors were felt in Pakistan and India as well.

The quake, which the USGS says measured 7.5, “centered 82 km (51 miles) southeast of Feyzabad in a remote area of Afghanistan in the Hindu Kush mountain range,” Reuters reports.

Here’s more from Bloomberg:

USGS sited the earthquake as being 42 miles west-northwest of Chitral, Pakistan. Chitral is located around 100 miles north of the city of Peshawar.

Pakistan’s GEO TV reported people leaving their homes in Peshawar, Abbottabad and the capital Islamabad, with no reports of casualties so far.

Pakistan’s AAJ TV said at least one building collapsed in Peshawar.

Residents of Delhi said tremors were felt in the Indian capital at 2:44 p.m. local time. The India Meteorological Department said the earthquake was at a depth of 118 miles (190km).

And here are a few first-hand accounts gathered by NBC:

“I just felt it go up and down as if I was on a New York subway on a really rough ride. Everything was moving up and down. My lunch on the table was literally just popping up and down.”

“There was no was way to go downstairs so we immediately climbed to the rooftop. It seemed the entire building is going to collapse. Women and children were crying and traffic was stopped on roads.”

More color from CBS:

“There are reports of casualties and destruction” in some remote districts of Badakhshan, said the provincial director of the national disaster management authority, Abdullah Humayoon Dehqan.

Power was cut across much of the Afghan capital, where tremors were felt for around 45 seconds. Houses shook, walls cracked and cars rolled in the street. Officials in the capital could not be immediately reached as telephones appeared to be cut across the country.

Russia Is Going To Pass A Law Formally Dumping The U.S. Dollar

Russia Is Going To Pass A Law Formally Dumping The U.S. Dollar

Vladimir Putin 2015 - Public DomainRussian President Vladimir Putin has introduced legislation that would deal a tremendous blow to the U.S. dollar.  If Putin gets his way, and he almost certainly will, the U.S. dollar will be eliminated from trade between nations that belong to the Commonwealth of Independent States.  In addition to Russia, that list of countries includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.  Obviously this would not mean “the death of the dollar”, but it would be a very significant step toward the end of the era of the absolute dominance of the U.S. dollar.  Most people don’t realize this, but more U.S. dollars are actually used outside of the United States than are used inside this country.  If the rest of the planet decides to stop accumulating dollars, using them to trade with one another, and loaning them back to us at ultra-low interest rates, we are going to be in for a world of hurt.  Unfortunately for us, it is only a matter of time until that happens.

When I first read the following excerpt from a recent RT article, I was absolutely stunned…

Russian President Vladimir Putin has drafted a bill that aims to eliminate the US dollar and the euro from trade between CIS countries.

This means the creation of a single financial market between Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and other countries of the former Soviet Union.

“This would help expand the use of national currencies in foreign trade payments and financial services and thus create preconditions for greater liquidity of domestic currency markets”, said a statement from Kremlin.

For a long time, tensions have been building between the United States and Russia over Syria, Ukraine, the price of oil and a whole host of other issues.  But I didn’t anticipate that things would get to this level quite yet.  It is expected that Putin’s new bill will become law, and this is only one element of a much larger trend that is now developing.

Putin Signs Secret Pact to Crush NATO « The Burning Platform

Putin Signs Secret Pact to Crush NATO « The Burning Platform.
Back on September 11 and 12, there was a summit meeting in a city that involved an organization that most Americans have never heard of. Mainstream media coverage was all but nonexistent.

The place was Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, a country few Westerners could correctly place on a map.

But you can bet your last ruble that Vladimir Putin knows exactly where Tajikistan is. Because the group that met there is the Russian president’s baby. It’s the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), consisting of six member states: Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The SCO was founded in 2001, ostensibly to collectively oppose extremism and enhance border security. But its real reason for being is larger. Putin sees it in a broad context, as a counterweight to NATO (a position that the SCO doesn’t deny, by the way). Its official stance may be to pledge nonalignment, nonconfrontation, and noninterference in other countries’ affairs, but—pointedly—the members do conduct joint military exercises.
