In the past several years, my family has been taking as many steps forward as possible when it comes to self-reliance. This is the one skill that will come in handy in every single imaginable crisis.
Other than not having an existence on this planet anymore, knowing how to rely on yourself and your skills will take you far when something goes wrong. Learning, researching, and reading are all great ways to boost your knowledge about self-reliance, but I’ve found that the only way to improve, is to just do it. Jump in with two feet!
All of our properties, homes, climates, and family structures are different, so there is no one size fits all plan that I could give you and everyone would have immediate success with. Unfortunately, trial and error are how we became more self-reliant. Our first garden on this property was an abject failure. I mean that with love and gratitude, however, because we learned what we had done wrong and how to correct it for future plantings. Our second garden was almost ruined because of a late frost in mid-June, however, once again, we were were grateful for that experience because we were able to scrounge up parts and build an almost free greenhouse from items we already had on hand. (It’s a collapsed horse shelter that didn’t survive the first snow here. We salvaged the metal and turned it into a greenhouse since we do not have horses.)

Water Procurement: Setting Up a Low-Budget Water Catchment System and Why It Will Save Your Life
Using the information from Part 1 & 2, the setup of a water system, decontamination station, and rain catchment procedures entailed to blend all parts together.
How are you doing, Ready Nutrition Readers? This article is the final segment of a three-part series dealing with obtaining water in a preparedness and survival stance. We will focus today on home and small group needs for water, incorporating knowledge from the prior two segments to complete the picture. The needs of each home will differ considerably due to varying needs of water consumption. A two-story home with five children, two parents, and an elderly grandparent with a long-term illness, for example, will need a different amount of water than two brothers in their thirties living in a small cottage.
The basics we’ll cover can be tailor-made to fit the situation that governs your needs. Conservatively speaking, each person needs between 1-2 gallons per day for intake; this does not include use of showers, toilet, sink, and laundry. As we covered in part 2 of this series on water, during a survival/grid down scenario, there are a number of diseases that must be taken into consideration. There are filtration and purification methods as detailed in part 1 as well as large-scale considerations. First things first: let’s discuss obtaining water.
I have included a diagram that shows how to make a water point for the family. Prior to doing any of this, consult with your lawyer or your local and state guidelines concerning laws, statutes, and regulations in the state you live; they may prohibit your obtaining and storing water (surface, rain, or other).

8 Important Things To Do On The Homestead This Summer
8 Important Things To Do On The Homestead This Summer
It’s finally here! Warm, sunny days, and cold herbal tea that’s brewed in the sunshine all day. But there are a few vital tasks that homesteaders should get done this summer before the weather turns.
The warm, sunny days are upon us. While we all love to sip on cold herbal tea that’s brewed in the sunshine all day, there are a few vital tasks that homesteaders should get done this summer before the weather turns.
Where I live, we get three months of summer weather. June, July, and August. A late freeze last year around Father’s Day destroyed everything in our garden, but this year, we prepared by saving up money and constructing a greenhouse. This will expand our growing season too. If you live in a cooler climate, I cannot stress enough how much a greenhouse is necessary. Because we were caught off guard last year, this year, we’ve figured out what we need to do, and how to prepare well in advance for the cooler weather this fall.
Sometimes it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but just take it one step at a time. If you know what needs to be done, you’ll be sure to complete it. Most of these tasks aren’t difficult ones for me, because I love doing them. But if you don’t like it, it can be psychologically draining.
8 Homestead Chores To Do in Early Summer
- Maintain your Greenhouse – make sure plants are thriving and they aren’t getting too hot. Keep your vegetables and herbs free of weeds. I also weed around the pollinator flowers so they won’t be snuffed out too. This is a daily task of checking your plants to make sure they are thriving. If you find pests, it’s best to figure out how to deal with them sooner, rather than later when it’s time to harvest.

Laundry detergent is a prep item that I have not begun to stock up on. I was planning on using some form of soap and baking soda mixture to wash clothing, but the below recipes look more appealing. I came across this recipe that was found on a preparedness forum that is mentioned below for those that are interested in knowing how to make laundry detergent to clean clothes. Did you know that mixing your own laundry is cost effective, and you get more for your money.
The below recipes were found of the forums of www.survivalistboards.com.
Laundry Detergent
I have used the below recipe for a little over two years now with good results. It is cheap and easy to mix up and gets the dirt out.
Ingredients
- 1 bar of soap – whatever kind your prefer
- 1 box of washing soda – in the laundry detergent aisle of stores. It comes in an Arm and Hammer box and will contain enough for 6 batches.
- 1 box of Borax – optional, but really kicks the cleaning up a notch.
- 5 gallon bucket with lid – or a container that can hold up to 15 liters.
- 3 gallons of tap water
Put about 4 cups of water into a pan on your stove and turn the heat up on high until it’s almost boiling.
While water is heating up, begin shaving strips off of bar soap into the water until most of the bar of soap is shaved off into the water. Make sure the soap shavings have dissolved into the water.

How To Start A Fruit Orchard!
How To Start A Fruit Orchard!
Nothing is more freeing than growing your own food. If you’ve already started growing vegetables in a garden, you know how good it is for your health and mental wellness, so why not try a fruit orchard?
Nothing is more freeing than growing your own food. If you’ve already started growing vegetables in a garden, you know how good it is for your health and mental wellness, so why not try a fruit orchard?
A home orchard can supply you with delicious, low-cost fresh fruit, attract pollinators, and provide shade and beauty to your property. It requires a relatively small investment of money but a large investment of time and patience. The time and patience that you put in are more than worth it, however.
Being more self-reliant can change your life! It will offer a wonderful source of freedom and help you save some money in the long run.
How To Choose Trees
Not all fruit will grow well in all areas, but the same is true of vegetables. You should visit USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to learn what agricultural zone you’re in and talk to those at greenhouses or nurseries to get a better idea of what will row well. Nurseries should be able to provide you with information about the zones where their plants will grow. For example, we live in zone 4, and that means red and golden delicious apples are some of the best to grow in that climate. If you live in a colder climate, apple trees might be a great choice in general because they are hearty. Cherry and plum trees will also be able to withstand some brutal cold, but you should make sure before you start to plant them.

The Importance Of Eating Healthier & Always Improving Your Diet
As a nation, the United States is barreling towards a healthcare crisis that will be difficult to avoid. As a nation, the United States is barreling towards a healthcare crisis that will be difficult to avoid. The majority of Americans are now overweight or obese and this mostly comes down to the decisions about what to eat. But there are so many other reasons why you should choose to constantly improve your diet.
We all know the health consequences of being overweight or obese, but did you know that an estimated 160 million Americans are obese? When looking at obesity alone, there are more obese adults living in America today – 78 million – than in any other country in the world, according to Health Data. Unfortunately, along with obesity comes chronic diseases, inflammation, heart conditions, and joint pain. It is also often readily remedied by making different food choices. (Yes, there are several diseases and conditions that make weight loss difficult, but that isn’t the case for the majority of Americans who are obese.)
“The rise in obesity among children in the US is especially troubling,” said Marie Ng, Assistant Professor of Global Health at IHME and the paper’s lead author. “We know that there are severe health effects related to childhood obesity, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and many cancers. We need to be thinking now about how to turn this trend around.”

6 Generator Safety Tips You Need To Know Before the Next Emergency
6 Generator Safety Tips You Need To Know Before the Next Emergency
Generators are great to have around! Portable or permanently installed standby generators can come in handy during long-term power outages. However, if you do not know how to use these tools properly, they can be dangerous.
Generators are great to have around – especially if you find yourself in an off-grid situation! Those that are dependent on power for medical equipment are especially vulnerable during power outages. Portable or permanently installed standby generators provide a temporary source of power during emergency power outages. But because these emergency tools are not regularly used, it is easy to overlook basic safety concerns; and, at times this can be dangerous. In fact, generator misuse can lead to dangerous issues like carbon monoxide poisoning, fire, and electrocution, so it needs to be taken seriously.
When purchasing a generator, you will need to add up the total amount of power (watts) needed for appliances to run and find a generator capable of handling the total amount. The total electric load should never exceed the manufacturers of the generator.
If you are installing a permanent generator, make sure it has a transfer switch. The transfer switch prevents energy from leaving your generator and going back onto the utility electrical equipment when it could be dangerous to a lineman or others near downed power lines, a process known as “back feed.” A qualified electrician should install your generator and transfer switch.
Make sure you know how your generator works and how to safely operate it. Part of this is reading the entire owner’s manual. You cannot “overdo it” or absorb too much information when it comes to the use of this important tool. Moreover, make sure the generator can handle the wattage of the appliances you are connecting. As well, practice setting up the generator and connecting it beforehand. Listed below are 6 safety tips you should know before the next emergency hits.

Food Shortages Are Coming: This Is How You’ll Survive

We have all likely seen the reports that food shortages are coming. This seems to be the one thing that the mainstream media and alternative media can agree upon. From the health crisis, we learned that we cannot be fully dependent on stores to have an everlasting supply of food and everyday living items. Furthermore, some states have even banned the purchase of seeds, all but making being self-sufficient “illegal.” But this is still the best way to protect yourself.
If food shortages are coming, there is a way to prepare yourselves so your family can eat healthy foods even when the worst happens. You need to make the effort to become more reliant on yourself for your food regardless of what the media reports. No matter what happens, self-reliance is freedom. This is often seen as difficult in our minds, but it can be done! Any amount of improvement in the are of food self-sufficiency will go far when the grocery store’s shelves start to empty.
Order seeds online. It only takes a small amount of research to figure out what kind of vegetables and/or fruit you can easily grow in your own yard or balcony. Ready Nutrition offers a “garden in a can” which is an excellent way to grab some seeds from the comfort of your own home. With over 5,000 seeds in the can, this is what you get in a Homestead Vegetable Garden-In-A-Can:

Sustainable Living: How To Take Control of Your Food Supply
Sustainable Living: How To Take Control of Your Food Supply
Food freedom is all about getting creative and using what you have. With a little resourcefulness, you could literally create a backyard microcosm and take control of your very own, homegrown food supply.
With a worldwide health crisis circulating the globe, it’s important to remember and put thought into what today is. Today is the day we focus on better ways to take care of Earth. Because let’s be honest, we haven’t done enough to care for this precious planet we call home. The way we live directly impacts our environment and, let’s be honest, humans are very wasteful in regards to using up precious resources.
The health crisis, which quickly became an economic crisis, and will soon morph into a food crisis shouldn’t stop us from doing the right thing by our bodies and the Earth. In fact, these crises should highlight how much more important it is to be self-sustainable by providing your own food and caring for the planet. We should all desire to take control of our food supply for the betterment of ourselves and the environment this Earth Day!
American decline is playing out in the news on a daily basis. Food banks are overwhelmed by those people who are unable buy groceries for their families. Mass unemployment and threats of looming economic recessions are forcing families to find more sustainable ways of making what they have work. As a result, rampant consumerism which is the backbone of the economy in America is doing an about-face.

10 Grocery Items That Disappeared Almost Immediately When an Emergency Was Declared
10 Grocery Items That Disappeared Almost Immediately When an Emergency Was Declared
Planning and preparing an emergency food pantry now will help you keep popular food items stocked and ready for the next crisis.
Large-scale events can quickly cause significant economic, social, and political disruption in its wake. Studies have shown most households are not prepared for a two-week disruption, let alone a month-long ordeal such as what we are enduring with COVID-19. As a result, the public quickly sees how vulnerable they are to an emergency. An unprecedented strain has been put on our food system as a result of the initial food grab at the beginning of the health crisis.
With grocery items flying off the shelves and a huge demand on food banks, its no wonder that vegetable and garden seeds have been in high demand because of interest in sustainable food production. We now see that when a large population is hit with a rapid, far from equilibrium event, the system itself cannot keep up with the demand. The result, at best, shows how thin the protections of society are when this type of event happens and we must learn from this.
In the wake of the COVID-19 food panic, certain food staples disappeared almost immediately; almost all of which are listed in our 25 must-have survival foods. While toilet paper seems to be the one item that is ingrained in our memories as the grocery item that initially incited the run on the grocery stores, the items listed below have been in short supply if not out of stock for weeks on end.
10 Food Items That Disappeared Almost Immediately in the COVID-19 Health Crisis
- Pasta and tomato sauce
- Yeast
- Flour
- Sugar
- Milk
- Eggs
- Butter
- Rice
- Beans
- Peanut butter

The Grim Reality About Pandemics They Don’t Want You To Know: “No Country is Prepared”
It’s been 100 years since the Spanish Flu caused a global pandemic. While you can rest easy right now knowing a global pandemic is not currently a threat, it is just a matter of time before the next one arrives. And when the next one does arrive, “scientists say an outbreak of a flu-like illness could sweep across the planet in 36 hours and kill tens of millions due to our constantly-traveling population.”

According to the Daily Mail, “The report, named A World At Risk, said current efforts to prepare for outbreaks in the wake of crises such as Ebola are ‘grossly insufficient’”. It was headed by Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, the former Norwegian prime minister and director-general of the WHO (World Health Organization). He said in the report: “The threat of a pandemic spreading around the globe is a real one. ‘A quick-moving pathogen has the potential to kill tens of millions of people, disrupt economies and destabilize national security.’”
No country is fully prepared for the mayhem a pandemic flu can cause

6 Ways to Recycle Water
6 Ways to Recycle Water
Water is an important part of our lives, and something we take for granted. Learnings ways to conserve water will help during droughts, economic hardships, keeping the utility bill down and conserving our vital natural resources. Here are 6 ways to conserve water from the home.
Watching the aftermath unfold during recent major disasters, has caused many of us to wake up and start finding solutions to be better prepared and more independent. One of these solutions is finding ways to conserve water for later use. Instead of looking forward to the future to find the answers, we are turning our heads back to the past, to our forefathers. Many have begun to grow gardens, care for livestock, and started learning self-reliant practices.
Conserving water is an important aspect of preparedness and homesteading alike, and also something that every home can begin practicing. These conservation methods teach individuals the importance of frugality, prudence and self-reliance. Using water consumption calculators is a great way to start researching how much water is used on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. When a person gets an idea as to how much water is used in the home, they can begin making appropriate changes.
Here are six easy ways to conserve and recycle water for later use:
1. Use rain collection barrels. This is one of the most efficient ways of collecting water. Because the barrels come in different sizes, you can adjust your conservation method to how you see fit. If a person does not have rain collection barrels, they could use buckets placed out in the yard to collect water. The stored water can be used for a short or long-term needs. As well, because rain water lacks all the chemicals added to tap water, it can be used for other purposes such as feeding livestock, or watering the garden with.

As winter approaches, we find ourselves cooped up indoors more enjoying those hot cups of coffee or cocoa, and dismissing the idea of venturing out in the cold. However, our bodies need sunlight and vitamin D, especially in the winter when the days shorten.
It’s difficult to get enough vitamin D in the winter. The days are shorter and the weather is cold and gloomy and the dreaded cold and flu season is in full swing. But you definitely should venture outside some, because so many studies show that vitamin D helps reduce the risk of colds and flu, giving your immune system a huge boost. The Vitamin D Council recommends vitamin D to help prevent colds and flu (URI or upper respiratory infections) based on the findings of two large meta-analyses (the strongest proof in medicine) published in respected medical journals. The best dose to use is unknown (as all of us are different with different body compositions), but the Vitamin D Council recommends that adults take 5,000 to 10,000 IU per day, depending on body weight. Children should take at least 100 IU/kg/day.
It isn’t just about immunities either
Vitamin D supports essential bodily functions like immunity, but it also helps maintain brain, heart, and bone health. Because vitamin D is essential to cognitive function, it’s important to make it a top priority. Unfortunately, up to 77% of people in the United States may not be getting enough of this important vitamin.
