The Butlerian Carnival

The Butlerian Carnival

Over the last week or so, I’ve heard from a remarkable number of people who feel that a major crisis is in the offing. The people in question don’t know each other, many of them have even less contact with the mass media than I do, and the sense they’ve tried to express to me is inchoate enough that they’ve been left fumbling for words, but they all end up reaching for the same metaphors: that something in the air just now seems reminiscent of the American colonies in 1775, France in 1789, America in 1860, Europe in 1914, or the world in 1939: a sense of being poised on the brink of convulsive change, with the sound of gunfire and marching boots coming ever more clearly from the dimly seen abyss ahead.

It’s not an unreasonable feeling, all things considered. In Washington DC, Obama’s flunkies are beating the war drums over Ukraine, threatening to send shipments of allegedly “defensive” weapons to join the mercenaries and military advisors we’ve already not-so-covertly got over there. Russian officials have responded to American saber-rattling by stating flatly that a US decision to arm Kiev will be the signal for all-out war. The current Ukrainian regime, installed by a US-sponsored coup and backed by NATO, means to Russia precisely what a hostile Canadian government installed by a Chinese-sponsored coup and backed by the People’s Liberation Army would mean to the United States; if Obama’s trademark cluelessness leads him to ignore that far from minor point and decide that the Russians are bluffing, we could be facing a European war within weeks.

Head south and west from the fighting around Donetsk, and another flashpoint is heating up toward an explosion of its own just now. Yes, that would be Greece, where the new Syriza government has refused to back down from the promises that got it into office: promises that center on the rejection of the so-called “austerity” policies that have all but destroyed the Greek economy since they were imposed in 2009.  This shouldn’t be news to anyone; those same policies, though they’ve been praised to the skies by neoliberal economists for decades now as a guaranteed ticket to prosperity, have had precisely the opposite effect in every single country where they’ve been put in place.

Kiev’s Bloody War Is Backfiring

Kiev’s Bloody War Is Backfiring

And the War Party is pushing to prop up their Ukrainian sock puppets

When Ukrainian army officers came to the Ukrainian village of Velikaya Znamenka to tell the men to prepare to be drafted, they weren’t prepared for what happened next. As the commanding officer was speaking, a woman seized the microphone and proceeded to tell him off: “We’re sick of this war! Our husbands and sons aren’t going anywhere!” She then launched into a passionate speech, denouncing the war, and the coup leaders in Kiev, to the cheers of the crowd.

What she did is now a crime in Ukraine: the only reason she wasn’t arrested on the spot is that the villagers wouldn’t have permitted it. But in Ukrainian Transcarpathia, well-known journalist for Ukrainian Channel 112 Ruslan Kotsaba has been arrestedand charged with “treason” and “espionage” for making a video in which he declared: “I would rather sit in jail for three to five years than go to the east to kill my Ukrainian brothers. This fear-mongering must be stopped.” Kotsaba may sit in jail for twenty-three years, the prescribed term for the charges filed against him.

Kotsaba’s arrest is part of a desperate effort by the Ukrainian government to intimidate the growing antiwar and anti-draft movement, which threatens to upend Kiev’s dreams of conquering the rebellious eastern provinces. Kotsaba’s particular crime, according to prosecutors, was in describing the conflict as a civil war rather than a Russian “invasion.” This is a point the authorities cannot tolerate: the same meme being relentlessly broadcast by the Western media – that an indigenous rebellion with substantial support is really a Russian plot to “subvert” Ukraine and reestablish the Warsaw Pact – now has the force of law in Ukraine. Anyone who contradicts it is subject to arrest.

KIEV FORCES CAUSE EXPLOSION AT CHEMICAL FACTORY IN DONETSK – OFFICIALS

KIEV FORCES CAUSE EXPLOSION AT CHEMICAL FACTORY IN DONETSK – OFFICIALS

A powerful explosion has occurred at a chemical factory in the city of Donetsk in southeastern Ukraine as a result of artillery shelling by Kiev forces, Ukrainian officials have informed on their social network accounts.

The explosion occurred late Sunday night.

Borys Filatov, former deputy governor of Dnipropetrovsk, and current member of the Ukrainian parliament, Verkhovna Rada, wrote on Facebook that the same “heroes” who had cut the “aviation of LPR [self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic]” have shelled Donetsk from the Smerch rocket launchers.

Earlier, leader of Ukraine’s Right Sector movement Dmytro Yarosh announced that the explosion was caused by artillery belonging to Kiev forces.

Meanwhile, Konstantin Dolgoff, co-chairman of the People’s Front of Novorossiya (united front established last spring by the self-proclaimed people’s republics in Ukraine’s southeast) said on his Facebook page that the explosion occurred at a chemical plant in Donetsk.

US risking another proxy war with Russia?

US risking another proxy war with Russia?

Surge of violence in Ukraine prompting the US to review its involvement in the conflict.

Ten months of fighting, more than 5,000 people killed and a poorly respected ceasefire in tatters.

A surge in violence in Ukraine is prompting the US to review its involvement in the conflict.

Up until now, it has stopped short of providing arms, as the Kiev government battles pro-Russia separatists.

But the White House has been hinting at a change of policy. But is it prompting a bigger fight that Ukraine is unlikely to win?

And does the US risk expanding a proxy war with its old adversary?

Russia Deploys Nuclear ICBM Launchers On Combat Patrol

Russia Deploys Nuclear ICBM Launchers On Combat Patrol

Perhaps it is a coincidence that a day before John Kerry’s arrival in Kiev (a visit which “coincided” with a 35% devaluation of the local currency) where among other things the US statesman discussed the possibility of official (as opposed to unofficial) deliveries of US “lethal support” to the civil war torn and now hyperinflation country, that Russia decided to put its nuclear ICBMs on combat patrol missions in various Russian regions. Specifically, according to Tass, “About 700 units of military equipment, including launchers are deployed in the positioning areas in the Tver, Ivanovo, Kirov, Irkutsk regions, as well as in Altai Territory and the Mari El republic.”

More:

The Topol, Topol-M and Yars mobile ballistic missile launchers have been put on combat patrol mission in six Russian regions, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman for Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) Colonel Igor Yegorov said on Wednesday.

“The Topol, Topol-M and Yars mobile launchers are drilling combat duty tasks in six regions of the country with extended combat patrolling time. About 700 units of military equipment, including launchers are deployed in the positioning areas in the Tver, Ivanovo, Kirov, Irkutsk regions, as well as in Altai Territory and the Mari El republic,” Yegorov said.

According to him, the time of winter combat patrolling has been extended to nearly a month this year. “This means that each missile regiment will spend about 60 days per year on combat patrolling routes,” he said.

Topol is a ground-based mobile strategic intercontinental ballistic missile system. The Topol-M ICBM system belongs to the fifth generation of strategic missiles. The three-stage solid-propelled single warhead missile has a silo and mobile version. Yars is a solid-propelled mobile and silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile with multiple warhead.

Now all that is needed is for Emmett Fitz-Hume and Austin Millbarge to show up and to confirm the old saying that “a weapon unused is a useless weapon”, especially if said weapon belongs to Northrop Grumman, Lockheed or General Dynamics.

US sending weapons to Kiev ‘not the answer’ to Ukraine crisis – White House adviser

US sending weapons to Kiev ‘not the answer’ to Ukraine crisis – White House adviser

Supplying more arms to the Ukrainian government will not solve the crisis in the country, US deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes has stated. According to Rhodes, implementing more sanctions against Russia is the amicable solution.

Responding to the comments made earlier in the day by US senior administration officials, saying that Washington is looking into providing Kiev with more weapons, Rhodes stated: “We don’t think the answer to the crisis in Ukraine is simply to inject more weapons.” He made the comments in an interview with CNN on Monday.

Instead, “the best way” lies through imposing more economic sanctions on Russia, the White House official said, blaming the events in the country on “Russia’s calculus.”

How to Start a Nuclear War

How to Start a Nuclear War

The United States has just made an exceptionally dangerous, even reckless decision over Ukraine. Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet leader who ended the Cold War, warns it may lead to a nuclear confrontation with Russia.

Rule number one of geopolitics:  nuclear-armed powers must never, ever fight.

Yet Washington just announced that by spring, it will deploy unspecified numbers of military “trainers” to Ukraine to help build Kiev’s ramshackle national guard. Also being sent are significant numbers of US special heavy, mine resistant armored vehicles that have been widely used in Afghanistan and Iraq. The US and Poland are currently covertly supplying Ukraine with some weapons.

The US soldiers will just be for training, and the number of GI’s  will be modest, claim US military sources. Of course.  Just like those small numbers of American “advisors” and “trainers” in Vietnam that eventually grew to 550,000. Just as there  are now US special forces in over 100 countries. We call it “mission creep.”

Blitzkrieg turned mayhem: Hacktivists claim they reveal Ukrainian troops’ annihilation

Blitzkrieg turned mayhem: Hacktivists claim they reveal Ukrainian troops’ annihilation

Ukraine’s subversive hacker group CyberBerkut has published documents allegedly exposing dreadful situation with the Kiev’s troops attacking separatist forces in the East: war crimes, tremendous loss of lives and wholesale desertion of entrapped troops.

The anti-government activists claim they have hacked personal computer of Ukraine’s Judge Advocate General and copied a number of classified documents. These documents are allegedly exposing some dark secrets of Kiev’s authorities regarding the real state of things in the zone of the so-called ‘anti-terrorist operation’ in the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions of the country.

The price of the warfare resumed by President Petro Poroshhenko in the east is terrifying. The hacked documents claim at least 1,100 servicemen of the Ukrainian army have lost their lives over the period of the last two weeks. Many dozens Ukrainian soldiers gave up to separatist forces. Ukrainian army has lost over 100 tanks and the armored vehicles.

This information comes into collision with the latest reports by Kiev generals about “no losses”“defeated enemy” and “thousands of eliminated terrorists”.

The explanation to this is simple: according to the documents allegedly hacked, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has officially forbidden the Defense Ministry to reveal true casualties among servicemen.

Panic in Kiev?

Panic in Kiev?

The following article appeared briefly at this URL on censor.net.uaand was quickly pulled down. Ironic? It would seem so. My translation. I bring it to you because it succinctly lays out the situation as I’ve been able to piece it together from multiple Russian- and Ukrainian-language sources, and because you are unlikely to come across anything this truthful from cough Western media cough.

“Panic in Kiev: Ukrainian forces surrender Donbass”

International observers report of growing panic in Kiev in connection with the successful counteroffensive of the separatists near Donbass.

Over a week of fighting the partisans have delivered a heavy blow to the Ukrainian forces. The group of Ukrainian fighters in Donbas suffered huge losses, the soldiers are demoralized, the officers are confused and unable to control the situation.

Ukrainian military leadership is seriously concerned of a new encirclement near Debaltsevo, as well as in other areas.

The situation is made worse by the fact that army and national guard reserves are almost completely depleted, and plugging the gaps in defense using small formations canoot stabilize the front. Besides, the Ukrainian forces are running low on ordnance, food and medical supplies.

Kiev used barrier squads to prevent troops from retreating – E. Ukraine militia

The Ukrainian military employed barrier troops who fired at their fellow servicemen in order to prevent their retreat during a night battle in the country’s southeast, the Defense Ministry of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) said.

“Ukrainian troops are demoralized, which is proven by an unprecedented incident that occurred last night,” DPR Defense Ministry spokesman Eduard Basurin said, as quoted by Donetsk News Agency.

An injured Ukrainian soldier who surrendered to the militias said during questioning that “anti-retreat units from territorial defense battalions were used against the Ukrainian troops,” Basurin said.

According to the spokesman, 70 Ukrainian troops have surrendered to the rebels since January 9, with 11 of them capitulating in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry decided to accelerate the graduation of students from the country’s military schools and universities in order to deploy them to the conflict zone in the Donetsk and Lugansk Regions, TASS reported.

“It is done to make up for the huge combat losses of officers” in the fighting in the southeast and the mass evasion of mobilization by reserve officers of the Ukrainian army, representative parent associations of Ukrainian military schools said.

Ukraine’s Government Is Losing Its War. Here Is Why:

Ukraine’s Government Is Losing Its War. Here Is Why:

On January 27th, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense headlined “Militants Continue to Suffer Losses,” and reported that four helicopters, and other weapons of the “militants,” were destroyed in battle, but no evidence was given to support the assertion.

Just two days prior, the (also pro-Government) Kiev Post had, in fact, bannered “Ukraine Hides Devastating Losses as Russia-Backed Fighters Surge Forward,” and reported “Ukraine’s worst-kept secret — that the Ukrainian army is drastically understating its casualties.” After detailing, there, what seems to be outrageous unconcern by the Government, for the welfare of troops it’s sending into battle (even by jamming battlefield-injured soldiers into regular civilian hospitals, which aren’t equipped to handle their injuries), this report ends with a doctor saying, “It’s bad everywhere. Yes, the soldiers are still standing at their positions ready to fight. But we don’t see any help coming for them.”

The Ukrainian news agency RIAN headlined on January 26th, “Mobilization in Dnipropetrovsk Almost Drowned,” and reported, “In Dnipropetrovsk region [which is run by the U.S. White House’s friend, the Ukrainian-Swiss-Israeli billionaire Ihor Kolomoysky, whose longstanding personal mercenary army has, alone, more than 5,000 fighters], thousands of men are hiding from the draft. Enforcement officers recognize that accomplishing their task will be very difficult.” More than 2,000 people there who were drafted “did not show up, they evaporated.”

Mariupol-Donetsk-Frunza! Can Poroshenko Escape Crimes Against Humanity Trial?

Mariupol-Donetsk-Frunza! Can Poroshenko Escape Crimes Against Humanity Trial?

A little over a week ago Petro Poroshenko ordered an all out assault on Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Faced with massive losses during the first few days the Poroshenko regime has resorted unsuccessfully to get both republic’s listed as terrorist organizations by the EU and United Nations.

It started with the Volonavaha bus attack after which the bus driver states in an interview with theKorrespondent that a mine exploded and killed his passengers in Ukrainian controlled territory.Images from the scene taken by the Ukrainian army shows a soldier carrying what appears to be a claymore mine. Claymore mines are directional explosives that are set off remotely or by a trip wire.

Kiev is engaging in a game of escalating crimes against humanity. Each attack on civilian populations has been followed by an all out media blitz trying to place blame on the fledgling republics.

Frunza- The Example not the Exception

When Poroshenko’s nationalist government ordered the new escalation Frunza was attacked again. Caught on video made by the Ukrainian army unit shelling the town, the world can no longer deny that Peter Poroshenko and the Ukrainian Rada are attacking civilian populations. The Ukrainian government and military are guilty of crimes against humanity.

Situation in Ukraine ‘nearing humanitarian catastrophe’ – Amnesty Intl

Situation in Ukraine ‘nearing humanitarian catastrophe’ – Amnesty Intl

Eastern Ukraine is nearing a humanitarian catastrophe, as residents struggle to get food and medicine, rights group Amnesty International told Reuters. The UN refugee watchdog added that the elderly in the region could be severely hit by Kiev’s policies.

People in the southeastern Lugansk and Donetsk regions are struggling financially and are barely scraping by, according to the deputy director of Europe and Central Asia at Amnesty International, Denis Krivosheev.

“While it may be too early to call this a humanitarian catastrophe, it’s clearly progressing in that direction,”Krivosheev said, adding that pensioners are the most vulnerable part of the population.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also expressed major concern for the elderly, pointing to Kiev’s dangerous decision to transfer payouts of social benefits and pensions to government-controlled areas.

‘Something wrong with Ukraine, EU’: Czech leader condemns ‘Nazi torchlight parade’

The chilling slogans and a flagrant demonstration of nationalist symbols during the neo-Nazi march in Kiev reminded the Czech President Milos Zeman of Hitler’s Germany. He said something was “wrong” both with Ukraine and the EU which didn’t condemn it.

Zeman was commenting on the appalling scenes, which showed thousands of Ukrainian nationalists holding a torchlight procession across the Ukrainian capital on Thursday to commemorate the 106th birthday of Stepan Bandera, a Nazi collaborator and the Ukraine nationalist movement’s leader during World War II.

“There is something wrong with Ukraine,” the Czech Republic’s leadertold radio F1 on Sunday. “Yesterday evening I was browsing the Internet and discovered a video showing the demonstration on Kiev’s Maidan on January 1.”

‘Premier of war’: Czech president says Yatsenyuk not seeking peaceful solution for E. Ukraine — RT News.

Czech President Milos Zeman has slammed Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk, calling him “a prime minister of war” because he is unwilling to peacefully solve the civil conflict in the country.

“From the statements byPM Yatsenyuk, I think that he is a ‘prime minister of war’, because he does not want a peaceful solution to the crisis [in Ukraine] recommended by the European Commission,” Zeman told Pravo, a Czech daily newspaper.

Yatsenyuk wants to solve Ukrainian conflict “by the use of force,” added the Czech leader.
