Pandemic, Economic Collapse, Full Societal Breakdown

Pandemic, Economic Collapse, Full Societal Breakdown

“And the will of Zeus was moving towards its end.” – Homer

Symbiotic Disharmony

The recline and flail of western civilization beats on.  Pandemic, economic collapse, full societal breakdown.  The sequence grooves from one to the next with the symbiotic disharmony of a minor pentatonic scale.

Peaceful protests devolved to rioting, looting, and structure fires in our own lowly hamlet last Sunday.  The Long Beach police couldn’t stop the vandals.  So the National Guard was summoned to quell the ransacking.  Some Guardsmen even stuck around to help out with the cleanup effort the following day.

The refrain – pandemic, economic collapse, full societal breakdown – has been repeated in many cities across the country.  For each: The time is now.  The place is here.

The progression from government pandemic lockdown orders to government curfew orders has been as natural as day to night and back again.  The difference between the two is subtle; like the difference between ketchup and catsup.  The main variance is the local authorities, in what must be an act of public service, now spam our mobile phone each afternoon with warnings to not venture out past curfew.

The events of the last weeks and months have been well covered.  We’ll leave the ongoing documentation tasks to those better qualified.  Instead, we’ll take a step back and look around.  Our aim today is to better understand what’s going on…so we may better anticipate – and plan for – what’s next.

Where to begin?

Human Stampedes

The mass impulse of a cattle stampede can be triggered by something as innocuous as a blowing tumbleweed.  A sudden startle, or a perceived threat, is all it takes to setoff this mass uncontrolled running.  Once the herd collectively begins charging in one direction it’ll eliminate everything in its path.

“This Could Turn Violent” – Italian Officials Fear South Turning Into A Powder Keg

“This Could Turn Violent” – Italian Officials Fear South Turning Into A Powder Keg

Signs of social unrest in major Western cities could be developing over the next few weeks, and as we previously warned last Friday, a global depression with high unemployment could unleash a “social bomb” in European countries and or North America.

At the moment, Italy is the most high-risk country in the West to experience a potential breakdown in society. The country is suffering from an explosion in COVID-19 cases and deaths, a collapsed hospital system, an economic depression, and high unemployment. Sounds a lot like Venezuela…

Italy has called up the military in recent weeks to enforce lockdowns across the country. There have also been reports of organized gangs operating in the Southern part of the country that are using social media to plot raids on businesses, reported Bloomberg.

It’s a race against time for Italian officials to prevent social unrest:

“We need to act fast, more than fast,” Mayor Leoluca Orlando of Palermo, a city of Southern Italy, told daily La Stampa. “Distress could turn into violence.”

Lockdowns in the country have entered the fourth week, Health Minister Roberto Speranza said in a statement on Monday recommending that the government must extend the countrywide lockdown through Easter. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has been injecting stimulus into the economy to prevent a complete economic crash, and the next round could hit as early as mid-April, worth $33 billion.

Italy is the epicenter of COVID-19 in Europe. As of Monday afternoon, 101,739 confirmed cases had been reported, with 11,591 deaths. The growth rates in deaths in Northern Italy is still on an exponential curve.

“Discomfort and malaise are growing, and we are recording worrying reports of protest and anger that is being exploited by criminals who want to destabilize the system,” said Orlando.

Hong Kong Police Warn City On Brink Of ‘Total Breakdown’

Hong Kong Police Warn City On Brink Of ‘Total Breakdown’

After nearly six months of protests in Hong Kong, the weekend demonstrations – which more closely resemble street skirmishes between black-clad protesters and the cops – have grown increasingly violent, people are being seriously wounded and even killed on both sides. And this week, protesters have apparently committed to another escalation: they’ve taken to the streets to disrupt HK’s public transportation during Monday and Tuesday, forcing businesses to close and schools to cancel.

Hong Kong policed warned on Tuesday that the city is now “on the brink of total collapse” after a second straight day of violence and chaos. The MTR, Hong Kong’s subway network, closed several stations and reduced the frequency of trains to cope with the demonstrations.

Some commuters were forced to walk along rail tracks to the next stop to catch a train to work. A senior police superintendent insisted that the ‘rioters’ – a term used pejoratively to describe the protesters – were pushing “our society” toward a breakdown.

“Over the past two days, our society has been pushed to the brink of a total breakdown as rioters went on a rampage,” Kong Wing-cheung, a senior police superintendent, said in a press conference.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam accused protesters on Tuesday of trying to “paralyze” the city. She accused demonstrators of being “extremely selfish” and said she hoped all universities in Hong Kong would encourage students not to participate in the violence.

Of course, the violence has gone both ways. Lam was speaking one day after police shot a protester and a man was set on fire in some of the most dramatic violence to arise from the protests. Lam added that the city planned to hold local elections on Nov. 24, the first test of public sentiment since the pro-democracy protests began five months ago.

The Stupid Things People Do When Their Society Breaks Down

The Stupid Things People Do When Their Society Breaks Down

A frequent mistake that many people make when considering the concept of social or economic collapse is to imagine how people and groups will behave tomorrow based on how people behave today. It is, though, extremely difficult to predict human behavior in the face of terminal chaos. What we might expect, or what Hollywood fantasy might showcase for entertainment purposes, may not be what actually happens when society breaks down.

It is also important to note that social and economic destabilization is usually a process, not an immediate event. This actually works in the favor of liberty activists and the preparedness minded. As a system moves through the stages of a breakdown, certain signals in the psychology of the population can be observed, and this gives us a warning as to how far down the rabbit hole we have actually gone.

Except in the case of a nuclear or EMP (electromagnetic pulse) event (which unfortunately are concerns because of the powder keg situation in Syria), vigilant liberty proponents could have considerably more time than the average person to preposition themselves safely. That said, there will be a host of expanding problems of a psychological nature we will have to deal with before, during and after the final leg down in the unfolding mess that internationalists often refer to as the “great global reset.”

The following list is based on social behavior patterns commonly seen during systemic crashes through modern history (the past 100 years). These are some of the stupid things people do as they begin to realize, at least subconsciously, that a SHTF scenario is in progress.

This Is How Quickly Society Will Break Down: “If You Don’t Have Food Yet I Feel Sorry For You”

This Is How Quickly Society Will Break Down: “If You Don’t Have Food Yet I Feel Sorry For You”

panic-store-shelves

Record breaking winter snow storms… they might be extreme, but should they really be crippling cities across the country?

The Drudge Report is splashed with warnings to “shelter in place,” while reporting that food is running out, and grocery stores shelves have been wiped out. The East Coast is on the brink.

But should they be?

Here is a live exercise reminder that the system can and will break down in an instant. The population is simply not ready for a major emergency. Hopefully you are; but they just aren’t.

This is just a blizzard – it may be a worst-in-history snow storm driven by media frenzy– but it IS expected to pass through after a day or two. Aside from a few power outages and street repairs, things will hopefully be back to normal. It could get worse, but that remains to be seen.

Nonetheless, if these pictures of store shelves are any evidence, society is not equipped for even the most basic crisis:

Shelves starting to empty at Giant on H St. in D.C. Water mostly gone, eggs & milk too.
