5 Surprising Items you NEED to Hoard

5 Surprising Items you NEED to Hoard

If you’ve ever considered creating a stockpile of necessities in the event of a crisis, you are not alone. Many people throughout the world are prepared to keep themselves and their loved ones safe and fed during any situation man or nature throws at them. However, you might be surprised by some items you will need to stockpile to actually make it through the crisis. This list does not contain any food products. NOTE: DON’T FORGET FOOD!

#1 Aspirin.

Everyone knows Asprin is a general pain reliever, and most everyone has used these pills to reduce fever or a bad headache. What most people don’t know is Asprin can be directly placed on a bee sting or bug bite, greatly reducing the pain experienced by the afflicted. When mixed with corn starch, Asprin can be used to create a very powerful bug repellent. Asprin infused water can even be used to help your plants avoid infection.

#2 Cat litter.

Even if you don’t have a cat, cat litter can be used for numerous purposes. Much like the use for a cat, litter would work for human waste. Litter poured into a portable toilet will greatly reduce smells. In addition to the obvious reasons, litter can be used to increase tire traction on icy roads. Just pour it under, in front and behind your tiers. If you are growing your own plants in a dry climate, add litter to the soil mix. It will actually hold in more moisture than just the soil.

#3 Cotton balls

Obviously we’ve all used cotton balls for applications of ointments and creams, but they will have many more uses in a crisis setting.

Preppers Love Diatomaceous Earth

Preppers Love Diatomaceous Earth

Survivalists love hacks that can help out in many different situations. That’s why preppers stock up on diatomaceous earth (DE). This organic product keeps animals – including us humans – healthy, protects food storage, gardens, and living quarters, and can help filter water.

You say you’ve never heard of this miracle stuff, much less how to pronounce it? Take heart, you are not alone.

First off, say “die-uh-tuh-MAY-shous” a few times to get the hang of it. Or use its short handle DE.

Diatomaceous earth is completely natural. It’s made from the fossilized remains of tiny algae-like organisms called diatoms (“DI-a-tomz“) that lived in ancient lakes, rivers, and oceans. Today, diatoms are mined to manufacture the soft white or off-white powder that has slightly abrasive properties.

Silica (or silicon dioxide) occurs is one of the two most abundant elements found in the Earth’s crust. Silica sand is used to make concrete and mortar. It is also used as a fine grinding polish for glass and stone, in foundry molds, and in glass-making.

Silica gel is often used as a desiccant, something that removes moisture.

The silica powder made from DE feels soft to our fingers but, in fact, is like microscopic concertina wire for insects. Tiny razor-sharp edges cut down any small-scaled intruder that attempts to cross a perimeter.

It might surprise you to know that diatomaceous earth comes in a food grade form that is safe and healthy for human consumption. [CAUTION: Non-food grade diatomaceous earth is NOT SAFE to be inhaled or ingested.]

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) strictly regulates food grade DE, for obvious reasons. Lives are at stake. Products must be clean, uncontaminated, and safe for internal bodily use. Non-food grade DE is used mostly as an agricultural and household insecticide.

Starting a Fire Without Matches or Other Modern Methods

Starting a Fire Without Matches or Other Modern Methods

If you have your Go Bag with you — as well you should — you should have several “modern methods” on-hand to start a fire including: water-proof matches, a lighter, and a magnesium striker. If for some reason you have been caught without these items, or they have been lost, or fail – here are some tried and true methods of starting a fire the “old-fashioned” way.

These techniques can and do work – but they are not as easy as you may have seen in the movies. Making fire without modern fire starters takes a lot of skill and patience, and can be physically demanding and frustrating. That is why it is so important that you carry more than one reliable method of starting a fire in your Go Bag.

You should practice these methods in your backyard until you can do one, or more well, before you should have to do so in an emergency situation. All primitive fire-starting methods use heat generated by friction for ignition. The two most reliable “primitive” fire starting methods are:

The Fire-Plow

To use this method, cut a straight groove in a softwood base and plow the blunt tip of a hardwood shaft up and down the groove. The plowing action of the shaft pushes out small particles of wood fibers. Then, as you apply more pressure on each stroke, the friction ignites the wood particles.

The Bow and Drill

The technique of starting a fire with a bow and drill is practical, but it requires much effort and patience to produce a fire. You need the following items to use this method:

What Is “Peak Oil” and How Can It Lead to Global Economic Collapse?

What Is “Peak Oil” and How Can It Lead to Global Economic Collapse?

Despite a steadily improving economy in the US, the same cannot be said for much of the rest of the world. And while there are strong and growing economies in places like China that can literally give the US a run for its money, there is one undeniable fact that many believe can and will eventually bring the world economies to a devastating state – we are using far more energy than the world’s oil reserves.

Dr. Stephen Leeb, who holds degrees in economics, mathematics, and physics, writes in his book, The Coming Economic Collapse, “The crisis is energy-related and will be brought about by the conflict between rising global demand for energy and our growing inability to increase energy production.” The supply and demand dynamics of oil are so out of balance that Leeb predicts it will not be long before we see crude oil at $200 per barrel!

In Dr. Leeb’s first book, The Oil Factor, which was written several years ago, he predicted the price of a barrel of oil would go to $100. It did reach a high of 113.00 in 2011. And while prices have dropped since then — largely due to stepping up in US production — they are trending back upward and are currently around 75.00 a barrel.

Professor Leeb’s concepts are still valid — oil is still a limited resource. He just may be off by a few years, just like Orwell. 2018 is right now looking a hell of a lot like his “1984.”

Most of us are woefully in denial about how much oil there really is remaining in the world’s oil reserves. We have been lulled into this ridiculous notion that the supply of oil is limitless.
