Canada border officers vote to strike, warn of supply chain disruption

Canada border officers vote to strike, warn of supply chain disruption

Labor action could begin Aug. 6

Thousands of Canada Border Services Agency personnel have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike – something that could throw a wrench into port, cross-border trucking, airfreight and international parcel operations.

The strike could happen as early as Aug. 6, the Public Service Alliance of Canada and its Customs and Immigration Union said on Tuesday. The union represents some 8,500 CBSA employees, including officers serving at ports of entry across the country.

The threat of a strike comes as Canada prepares to reopen its land border to nonessential travel for the first time since March 2020. The timing wasn’t lost on the union, which warned that a strike could lead to “significant disruption to the flow of goods.”

The impacts could bring delays to commercial vehicle traffic and impact parcel deliveries and duties collection, the union said.

CBSA officers serving in essential positions are legally barred from striking. But as American Shipper reported, the legal definition of essential is narrow in scope and doesn’t include collection of duties and taxes, according to a federal tribunal ruling. The Port of Vancouver appears particularly vulnerable as it contends with an unprecedented level of container ship traffic. As the largest port in Canada, any disruption there could have impacts throughout the country and intermodal rail and trucking operations.

The union members have been without a contract since 2018 and are seeking pay parity with other Canadian law enforcement agencies and protections against what they allege is a toxic workplace culture.

Many Americans Are Getting the Country They Asked For and They Don’t Like It

Many Americans Are Getting the Country They Asked For and They Don’t Like It

Every single action taken is a precursor to a future action. That’s something that not enough people understand. All of these things that sound like such good ideas when they happen to the “enemy,” whoever that might be? They seem a whole lot less like good ideas when they happen to you. Many Americans are getting exactly the country they asked for and they don’t like it at all.

The astounding levels of cognitive dissonance make it impossible for some people to see that they themselves were the ones who set the precedents for things happening today. If you give the government – any government, not just ours – an inch, they will take a mile, and I guarantee some of that mile will be to your own detriment.

A bunch of people will read my headline and be too mad to read the article. They’ll retort angrily, “I didn’t ask for it.”

Maybe not. Maybe you are as pure an anarchist as ever there was. But just about everyone has had some feelings about things that should apply to one group but not others. It’s arrogant, and it’s true.

Let’s examine some events that are causing uproars and then look back to when it seemed like a good idea.

The Border Control is really taking the whole “control” thing seriously.

Here’s another place where folks were cheering until it happened to them. The scene at the US-Mexico border has been a tense one recently as the Trump administration cracks down on illegal aliens entering the United States. While some people strenuously object, many others have rejoiced over these policies.

Why Europe Will Collapse: Schultz’s Outrage at Poland

Why Europe Will Collapse: Schultz’s Outrage at Poland

A huge protest against the Europe Union has taken place in Poland. When I was there, everyone I spoke to was against joining the euro. They all said that the euro would destroy Poland as it did in Greece and the rest of Southern Europe. European Parliament President Martin Schulz (SPD) has said that the protests in Poland have a “coup-character” because they are realistic and against the policies of Brussels, whom refuses to review or admit that the euro has been a complete disaster for Europe as a whole.

Poland has responded with indignation, making it clear that the people have a democratic right and have acted within the rule of law. Prime Minister Beata Szydlo demanded on Monday for an apology from Schulz for his statement. But Luxemburg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn warned on behalf of the EU presidency that independence of the judiciary and the media in Poland is threatened. Indeed, the threat to any democratic right comes from Brussels.

Schulz said on German radio that “right-wing populists” are the greatest threat when they argue against his policies and take government into their own hands to accuse external forces to interfere in the internal politics of their country. These comments from Schultz are dictatorial in nature, as they say that anyone who disagrees with the federalization of Europe going into the hands of Brussels is a threat.  A threat to what — freedom? There is no hope of trying to reason in Brussels. This is beyond hope. We must crash and burn until the end for they will NEVER admit the slightest error in their ideas.
