Uranium Mine Sludge Discharge Permit Threatens Lake Malawi | Environment News Service

Uranium Mine Sludge Discharge Permit Threatens Lake Malawi | Environment News Service.

KARONGA, Malawi, November 25, 2014 (ENS) – Paladin Africa Ltd, which mines uranium ore in Malawi’s northern district of Karonga, has come under fire from a coalition of Malawian civil society groups and chiefs over its proposal to discharge mining sludge into the Sere and North Rukuru rivers.

The toxic substances that would flow from the tailings pond at the Kayelekera Uranium Mine into Lake Malawi 50 kilometers (30 miles) downstream include waste uranium rock, acids, arsenic and other chemicals used in processing the uranium ore, the coalition fears.

Lake Malawi in eastern Africa is the world’s ninth largest lake, some 580 kilometers (360 miles) long, and 75 kilometers (47 miles) wide at its widest point. It extends into Malawi’s neighbors Tanzania and Mozambique.

The lake provides water for drinking and domestic use to millions of Malawians. Part of the lake is protected as a national park, and it is inhabited by more than 850 cichlid fish species found nowhere else on Earth.

Canada bars visas from Ebola-hit countries – Americas – Al Jazeera English

Canada bars visas from Ebola-hit countries – Americas – Al Jazeera English.

Canada has suspended visa applications for residents and nationals of countries with “widespread transmission” of the Ebola virus, becoming the second nation after Australia to introduce such a measure.

The countries most severely hit by the worst Ebola outbreak ever are Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Canada has not yet had a case of the disease.

The similar move by Australia was slammed on Wednesday by Dr Margaret Chan, the World Health Organisation’s director general, who said closing borders won’t stop spread of the Ebola virus.

Canadians, including healthcare workers, in West Africa will be permitted to travel back to Canada, the government said.

Kevin Menard, a spokesman for Canada’s immigration ministry, said the government has “instituted a pause” in issuing visas for foreigners from risky countries, but noted “there was room for discretion if we can be assured that someone is not infected with the virus,” according to the Associated Press news agency.

As Ebola Cases Top 10,000, Obama Says America Can “Beat” The Deadly Virus | Zero Hedge.

Following the sad death of its first Ebola case, Mali’s President has said he will not close his nation’s border with Guinea, because “the incident showed it was impossible to completely seal his country.”

Mali’s neighbors, on the other hand, are shutting borders, as Mauritania tries not to become Africa’s 7th Ebola-infected country. This brings, according to The WHO, the number of cases of Ebola to 10,141 with 4,922 dead (so far).
