Greenwash: Shell May Remove “Oil” From Name as it Moves to Tap Arctic, Gulf of Mexico<\/a><\/h3>\n

Shell Oil<\/a>\u00a0has announced it may take a page out of the\u00a0BP<\/span>\u00a0\u201cBeyond Petroleum\u201d<\/a>\u00a0greenwashing book,\u00a0rebranding itself as something other than an oil company<\/a>\u00a0for its United States-based\u00a0unit.<\/p>\n

Marvin Odum<\/a>, director of Shell Oil’s upstream subsidiary companies in the Americas,\u00a0told Bloomberg<\/a>\u00a0the name Shell Oil \u201cis a little old-fashioned, I\u2019d say, and at one point we\u2019ll probably do something about that\u201d\u00a0during a luncheon interview with Bloomberg News co-founder Matt Winkler<\/a>\u00a0(beginning at 8:22)\u00a0at the recently-completed\u00a0Shell-sponsored\u00a0Toronto Global Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOil,\u201d said Odum, could at some point in the near future be removed from the\u00a0name.<\/p>\n

Odum’s comments come as Shell has moved aggressively to drill for\u00a0offshore oil in the Arctic<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0deep offshore in the Gulf of Mexico<\/a>, while also maintaining a heavy footprint in\u00a0Alberta’s tar sands oil patch<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Shell also recently acquired\u00a0BG<\/span>\u00a0(British Gas) Group<\/a>, a company that owns numerous assets in the global\u00a0liquefied natural gas (LNG<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0industry, transforming the company into what Forbes hailed as a \u201cworld\u00a0LNG<\/span>\u00a0giant<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winkler quipped in Toronto that due to this major asset purchase, it might be more accurate to call Shell Oil, \u201cShell\u00a0Gas.\u201d<\/p>\n

In October 2011,\u00a0BG<\/span>\u00a0Group signed a major contract<\/a>\u00a0with the U.S.-based\u00a0LNG<\/span>\u00a0giant\u00a0Cheniere<\/a>\u00a0to ship its gas product obtained via\u00a0hydraulic fracturing (\u201cfracking\u201d)<\/a>\u00a0to the global market. That\u00a0LNG<\/span>\u00a0will begin to flow\u00a0by the end of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just a week before Odum told Winkler that Shell may take \u201coil\u201d out its company name, he\u00a0appeared on Bloomberg News<\/a>\u00a0on the sidelines of the Aspen Ideas Festival to boast about his company’s big plans\u00a0\u2014\u00a0plans to drill for\u00a0oil\u00a0in the deep offshore Gulf of Mexico Appomattox field<\/a>. At Aspen, Odum called Appomattox a \u201cworld class oil and gas\u00a0project.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
