{"id":9932,"date":"2015-07-11T06:56:42","date_gmt":"2015-07-11T11:56:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9932"},"modified":"2015-07-11T07:01:23","modified_gmt":"2015-07-11T12:01:23","slug":"why-greece-is-the-precursor-to-the-next-global-debt-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9932","title":{"rendered":"Why Greece Is The Precursor To The Next Global Debt Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakprosperity.com\/blog\/93398\/why-greece-precursor-next-global-debt-crisis\" target=\"_blank\">Why Greece Is The Precursor To The Next Global Debt Crisis<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"article-lede\">\n<div class=\"field field-type-text field-field-lede\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item odd\"><strong>The Eurozone fantasy will be one of the early casualties<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The one undeniable truth about the debt drama in Greece is that each of the conventional narratives\u2014financial, political and historical\u2014has some claim of legitimacy.<\/p>\n<p>For example, spendthrift Greeks shunned fiscal discipline: here\u2019s an account from 2011 that lays out the gory details:\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2007949\/The-Big-Fat-Greek-Gravy-Train-A-special-investigation-EU-funded-culture-greed-tax-evasion-scandalous-waste.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Big Fat Greek Gravy Train: A special investigation into the EU-funded culture of greed, tax evasion and scandalous waste<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Or how about: Greek reformers want to fix the core structural problems but are being stymied by tyrannical European Union\/Troika leaders:\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2015\/06\/29\/the-greek-debt-crisis-and-crashing-markets\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Greek Debt Crisis and Crashing Markets<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rather than get entangled in the arguments over which of the conventional narratives is the core narrative\u2014a hopeless misadventure, given that each narrative has some validity\u2014let\u2019s start with the facts that are supported by data or public records.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Greek Economy Is Small and Imbalanced<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are the basics of Greece\u2019s economy, via the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cia.gov\/library\/publications\/the-world-factbook\/geos\/gr.html\" target=\"_blank\">CIA\u2019s World Factbook<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Greece&#8217;s population is 10.8 million and its GDP (gross domestic product) is about $200 billion (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.macropolis.gr\/?i=portal.en.the-agora.2080\" target=\"_blank\">This source<\/a>states the GDP is 182 billion euros or about $200 billion). Note that the euro fell sharply from $1.40 in 2014 to $1.10 currently, so any Eurozone GDP data stated in dollars has to be downsized accordingly. Many sources state Greek GDP was $240 billion in 2013; adjusted for the 20% decline in the euro, this is about $200 billion at today\u2019s exchange rate.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles County, with slightly more than 10 million residents, has a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/laedc.org\/our-services\/business-assistance-layoff-aversion\/doing-business-in-l-a-county\/\" target=\"_blank\">GDP of $554 billion<\/a>, more than double that of Greece.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union has over 500 million residents.
