{"id":9889,"date":"2015-07-10T06:46:41","date_gmt":"2015-07-10T11:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9889"},"modified":"2015-07-10T06:46:41","modified_gmt":"2015-07-10T11:46:41","slug":"canadas-economy-isnt-in-recession-despite-report-joe-oliver-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9889","title":{"rendered":"Canada&#8217;s economy isn&#8217;t in recession, despite report, Joe Oliver says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-headline\">\n<h3 class=\"story-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/canada-s-economy-isn-t-in-recession-despite-report-joe-oliver-says-1.3137159\" target=\"_blank\">Canada&#8217;s economy isn&#8217;t in recession, despite report, Joe Oliver says<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"story-deck\"><strong>Private sector economists warn of possibility of recession this year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite an economy that&#8217;s shrunk every month for which we have data this year, the federal\u00a0finance minister says Canada is not in a recession and is poised for growth later in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>At an event in Toronto on Friday, Finance Minister Joe Oliver told reporters\u00a0that the economy will avoid recession this year, despite new<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/canada-s-economy-shrank-0-1-in-april-statistics-canada-says-1.3133017\">data from Statistics Canada earlier this week that shows GDP has contracted<\/a>\u00a0in each of the first four months of the year \u2014 two-thirds of the way toward the technical definition of a recession.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First off, we&#8217;re not in a recession,&#8221; Oliver was quoted by Bloomberg as saying.\u00a0&#8220;We don&#8217;t believe we will be in a recession.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Technically, economists define a recession as two consecutive quarters with negative GDP growth. (Darren Calabrese\/Canadian Press)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>April&#8217;s\u00a0federal budget assumed an economy that would grow by about two per cent this year. So far, the numbers show the economy shrank by 0.6 per cent in the first three months of the year, and another 0.1 per cent in April.<\/p>\n<p>The Finance Department&#8217;s optimism is far from a universal view.
