Leaked Documents Show FBI, DEA and U.S. Army Buying Italian Spyware<\/a><\/h3>\n

The FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Army have all bought controversial software that allows users to take remote control of suspects\u2019 computers, recording their calls, emails, keystrokes and even activating their cameras, according to internal documents hacked from the software\u2019s Italian manufacturer.<\/p>\n

The company, Hacking Team, has also been aggressively marketing the software to other U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies, demonstrating their products to district attorneys in New York,\u00a0San Bernardino, California<\/a>, and\u00a0Maricopa, Arizona<\/a>;\u00a0and multi-agency task forces like the\u00a0Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation<\/a>\u00a0in Florida and California\u2019s\u00a0Regional Enforcement Allied Computer Team<\/a>. (We do not use this product nor are we currently considering a proposal from the vendor\/manufacturer to purchase it,\u201d\u00a0Jerry Cobb, a spokesperson for the\u00a0Maricopa County Attorney\u2019s Office\u00a0<\/i>said.)<\/p>\n

The company was also in conversation with various other agencies, including the CIA, the Pentagon\u2019s\u00a0Criminal Investigative Service<\/a>, the\u00a0New York Police Department<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0Immigrations and Customs Enforcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The revelations come from hundreds of gigabytes of company information, including emails and financial records, which were released online Sunday night and analyzed by\u00a0The Intercept<\/em>. Milan-based Hacking Team is one of a handful of companies that\u00a0sell off-the-shelf spyware<\/a>\u00a0for hundreds of thousands of euros \u2014 a price point accessible to smaller countries and large police forces. Hacking Team has drawn fire from human rights and privacy activists who contend that the company\u2019s aggressive malware, known as Remote Control System, or RCS, is being sold to countries that deploy it against activists, political opponents and journalists.<\/p>\n

Even in the U.S., where the software would presumably be used only with a judge\u2019s approval, the tactic is still controversial. Just last month, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa,\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0to the director of the FBI asking for \u201cmore specific information about the FBI\u2019s current use of spyware,\u201d in order for the Senate Judiciary Committee to evaluate \u201cserious privacy concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n
