The American spy had an important message to convey: o<span class=\"s1\">ne of Germany\u2019s own senior officials\u00a0<\/span>was leaking information to the press.<\/p>\n<p>The suspected leaker, Hans Josef Vorbeck, had been in contact with\u00a0<em>Spiegel<\/em>, the station chief\u00a0told the German official, G\u00fcnter Heiss. Head of Division 6, Heiss is responsible for coordinating Germany\u2019s intelligence services. Vorbeck was his deputy.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Vorbeck was responsible for managing German counterterrorism efforts. Following the meet-up, Vorbeck was discreetly transferred to a less prestigious post, overseeing historical archives for the BND, Germany\u2019s foreign intelligence service.<\/p>\n<p>For four years, the conversation that led to Vorbeck\u2019s demotion remained secret. It has now become public, thanks largely to a German intelligence inquiry launched in the wake of Edward Snowden\u2019s historic leak of top-secret NSA documents.\u00a0The walk \u2014 and its implications for U.S.-German relations \u2014 were\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/politik\/deutschland\/der-spiegel-ist-im-visier-von-us-geheimdiensten-a-1041985.html\">detailed Friday<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<em>Spiegel<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Obama administration officials told the magazine that the disclosure of the alleged communications between Vorbeck and its journalists was prompted by national security concerns. The fact that the Americans were willing to expose an ongoing surveillance operation underscored the seriousness of the threat posed by the leaks, sources in Washington told\u00a0<em>Spiegel<\/em>.
