The company&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/app.quotemedia.com\/data\/downloadFiling?webmasterId=101533&amp;ref=10367862&amp;type=HTML&amp;symbol=BTU&amp;companyName=Peabody+Energy+Corp.&amp;formType=8-K&amp;dateFiled=2015-07-02\" target=\"_blank\">chief financial officer Michael C. Crews resigned<\/a>\u00a0abruptly on June 28 amidst the\u00a0freefall.<\/p>\n<p>Another major\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0coal company,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?cid=697030\" target=\"_blank\">Alpha Natural Resources (<span class=\"caps\">NYSE<\/span>:\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ANR<\/span>)\u00a0<\/a>hit a new all-time low yesterday at just 27 cents per share, and sank as low as 24 cents that morning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?cid=660543\" target=\"_blank\">Arch Coal (<span class=\"caps\">NYSE<\/span>:\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">ACI<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0also hit its all-time low of 33 cents per share as well, down from its all-time high of $73.42 in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>All three companies&#8217;\u00a0stock values\u00a0are down roughly 80% from the beginning of\u00a02015.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Screen%20Shot%202015-07-02%20at%203.07.16%20PM.png\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<em>2015 year-to-date stock performance on the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">NYSE<\/span>\u00a0for Peabody (<span class=\"caps\">BTU<\/span>), Arch (<span class=\"caps\">ACI<\/span>) and Alpha (<span class=\"caps\">ANR<\/span>). Source: Google Finance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Arch has received a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/13162892\/1\/arch-coal-aci-tanks-on-debt-restructuring-negotiations-nyse-delisting-notice.html\" target=\"_blank\">delisting notice<\/a>\u00a0from the New York Stock Exchange for falling below $1 per share, and has only a few months to regain its footing or lose its spot on the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">NYSE<\/span>. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.4-traders.com\/ALPHA-NATURAL-RESOURCES-11655\/news\/ALPHA-NATURAL-RESOURCES--Notice-of-Delisting-or-Failure-to-Satisfy-a-Continued-Listing-Rule-or-Stan-20212821\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alpha received<\/a>\u00a0its own delisting notice a month\u00a0prior.<\/p>\n<p>Given the global nature of the coal industry and the generally complicated world of commodity trading, there are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-01-30\/coal-keeps-dropping-as-opec-like-tactic-stymied-by-dollar\" target=\"_blank\">a myriad of influences at play\u00a0<\/a>here. But one cannot ignore the fact that these historic lows are coming at a time of historic commitments to renewable energy and carbon reductions by major coal-consuming and producing countries<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/06\/30\/us-brazil-climate_n_7696454.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0like the United States<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2015\/06\/30\/breaking-china-indc-puts-world-emission-plans-50\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0China.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to energy analysts at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ieefa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis<\/a>\u00a0(<span class=\"caps\">IEEFA<\/span>),\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stowe.snetglobalindexes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stowe Global Coal Index<\/a>\u00a0has lost 71% of its value since\u00a02010:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/stoew%20global%20coal%20index.png\" alt=\"stowe global coal index\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">IEEFA<\/span>&#8216;s director of finance, Tom Sanzillo,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessgreen.com\/bg\/analysis\/2408771\/coal-industry-faces-grim-outlook-analysts-warn\" target=\"_blank\">recently told reporters<\/a>\u00a0that,\u00a0\u201cthe coal industry is arguably the poorest-performing sector in today&#8217;s global economy and is in a state of structural decline.
