Government Trolls Are Using \u2018Psychology-Based Influence Techniques\u2019 On YouTube, Facebook And Twitter<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"Troll<\/a>Have you ever come across someone on the Internet that you suspected was a paid government troll?\u00a0 Well, there is a very good chance that you were not imagining things.\u00a0 Thanks to Edward Snowden, we now have solid proof that paid government trolls are using \u201cpsychology-based influence techniques\u201d on social media websites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.\u00a0 Documents leaked by Snowden also reveal that government agents have been conducting denial-of-service attacks, flooding social media websites with thinly veiled propaganda and have been purposely attempting to warp public discourse online.\u00a0 If we do not stand up and object to this kind of Orwellian behavior, it is only going to get worse and worse.<\/p>\n

In the UK, the Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group (JTRIG) is a specialized unit within the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).\u00a0 If it wasn\u2019t for Edward Snowden, we probably still would never have heard of them.\u00a0 This particular specialized unit is engaged in some very \u201cquestionable\u201d online activities.\u00a0 The following is an excerpt from a recent piece\u00a0by Glenn Greenwald and Andrew Fishman<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n

Though its existence was secret until last year, JTRIG quickly developed a distinctive profile in the public understanding, after documents from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0the unit had engaged in \u201cdirty tricks\u201d like deploying sexual \u201choney traps\u201d designed to discredit targets, launching denial-of-service attacks to shut down Internet chat rooms, pushing veiled propaganda onto social networks and generally\u00a0warping discourse<\/a>\u00a0online<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We are told that JTRIG only uses these techniques to go after the \u201cbad guys\u201d.<\/p>\n

But precisely who are the \u201cbad guys\u201d?<\/p>\n
