Energy Files: Defra report reveals extent of impacts on people living near fracking wells<\/a><\/h3>\n

People that live near fracking sites could be affected by health problems and financial hardships \u2013 and fracking might not even help climate change \u2013 \u00a0a\u00a0government report has revealed.<\/a><\/p>\n

The report \u2013 which was initially heavily redacted but has now been fully published\u00a0after the Information Commissioner ordered the government to do so<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 includes striking passages that were previously blacked out on the risks of living near a fracking well, most dramatically that:<\/p>\n

\u201cProperties located within a 1 \u2013 5 mile radius of the fracking operation may also incur an additional cost of insurance to cover losses in case of explosion on the site.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cSuch an event would clearly have social impacts,\u201d some genius notes.<\/p>\n

There are also several other health impacts and financial impacts on local rural communities that have been detailed \u2014\u00a0and are now revealed.<\/p>\n

On climate change, the report says that fracking in the UK could cause a gross increase in global CO2 emissions if the LNG or other fossil fuels that would otherwise be burnt in the UK are burnt elsewhere \u2014\u00a0and we are still emitting from burning fracking gas.<\/p>\n

Energydesk<\/em>\u00a0put in the Freedom of Information request<\/a>\u00a0for the report last summer, and repeatedly asked\u00a0Defra to fill in the blacked-out blanks in the back-end last year.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve finally been able to properly scour the report \u2014 and here\u2019s what\u2019s come to light:<\/p>\n

Health: Water, noise, light and air pollution<\/b><\/p>\n

People could experience the consequences of surface water contamination from fracking \u2014 not from drinking water but \u201cit can affect human health indirectly through consumption of contaminated wildlife, livestock, or agricultural products\u201d.<\/p>\n

Noise and light pollution from rigs could also lead to problems, the internal Defra report acknowledges. It says: \u201cSome residents may experience deafening noise; light pollution that affects sleeping patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNoxious odours from venting gases can also impact on air quality for local residents,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n
