Previous agreements were about reducing carbon emissions from burning coal, oil and gas. This takes matters a step further by envisioning a fossil fuel\u2013free\u00a0future.<\/p>\n<p>There are reasons for cynicism: the long time frame means none of the politicians involved in the commitment will even be alive, let alone held accountable, for meeting the target in 2100; Canada and Japan\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2015\/06\/08\/canada-japan-said-blocking-g7-push-on-climate-change.html\" target=\"_blank\">watered down Germany\u2019s proposal<\/a>\u00a0to end fossil fuel energy by 2050; and many governments, including Canada\u2019s, haven\u2019t met even their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/may\/15\/canada-reneges-emissions-targets-tar-sands-production\" target=\"_blank\">current weak commitments<\/a>. But in calling for deep emissions cuts by 2050 and an end to fossil fuel energy by 2100 \u2014 \u201cdecarbonization\u201d \u2014 the non-binding pledge at least shows governments recognize the need to confront climate\u00a0change.<\/p>\n<p>Canada could show it takes the commitment seriously by heeding the advice of 100 scientists (including 12 Royal Society of Canada fellows, 22\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0National Academy of Sciences members, five Order of Canada recipients and a Nobel Prize winner, from a range of disciplines) who\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oilsandsmoratorium.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">released a statement<\/a>\u00a0with 10 reasons why \u201cNo new oil sands or related infrastructure projects should proceed unless consistent with an implemented plan to rapidly reduce carbon pollution, safeguard biodiversity, protect human health, and respect treaty\u00a0rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Simon Fraser University energy economist and statement co-author Mark Jaccard, \u201cLeading independent researchers show that significant expansion of the oil sands and similar unconventional oil sources is inconsistent with efforts to avoid potentially dangerous climate\u00a0change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another author, Northern Arizona University ecologist Tom Sisk, said it\u2019s not just about climate:\u00a0\u201cOil sands development is industrializing and degrading some of the wildest regions of the planet, contaminating its rivers, and transforming <span class=\"Apple-style-span\">a landscape that stores huge amounts of carbon into one that releases\u00a0it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zero Carbon Emissions: The New Language Of Climate Change This is a guest post by David Suzuki.
