{"id":9583,"date":"2015-06-30T08:07:06","date_gmt":"2015-06-30T13:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9583"},"modified":"2015-06-30T08:07:06","modified_gmt":"2015-06-30T13:07:06","slug":"new-york-state-ban-on-fracking-made-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9583","title":{"rendered":"New York State Ban On Fracking Made Official"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-field-bimage field-type-image field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/06\/29\/new-york-state-ban-fracking-made-official\" target=\"_blank\">New York State Ban On Fracking Made Official<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/blog_teaser\/public\/blogimages\/coasterfracking.jpg?itok=Wex8gQZd\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"201\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>After years of exhaustive research and examination of the science and facts, prohibiting high-volume hydraulic fracturing is the only reasonable\u00a0alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those were the words many activists in New York never expected to hear from Joe Martens, head of the state\u2019s Department of Environmental Conservation, but they were included in a statement released today as New York made the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dec.ny.gov\/energy\/75370.html\" target=\"_blank\">state\u2019s ban on fracking\u00a0official.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This step in the process was expected after the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/weather\/index.ssf\/2015\/05\/new_york_finally_issues_fracking_report_next_step_is_formal_ban.html\" target=\"_blank\">release in May<\/a>\u00a0of the massive 1,448 page report on fracking that was seven years in the making which also was preceded by the Cuomo administration announcing they planned to ban fracking\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2014\/12\/17\/new-york-governor-cuomo-ban-fracking-state-citing-health-threats\" target=\"_blank\">back in\u00a0December.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While there had been some mentions\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.capitalnewyork.com\/article\/albany\/2015\/06\/8569493\/epa-fracking-report-may-complicate-cuomo-ban\" target=\"_blank\">in the media<\/a>\u00a0that the recent Environmental Protection Agency (<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>) report on fracking and drinking water contamination might cause trouble for the Cuomo administration, it appears that trouble was limited to predictable Republican statements about Cuomo\u2019s decision being based on \u201ccontroversial scientific\u00a0studies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As explained in detail in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/06\/25\/epa-fracking-study-close-look-numbers-fine-print-details\" target=\"_blank\">this DeSmog piece by Sharon Kelly<\/a>, if you read the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>\u00a0report and didn\u2019t just rely on headlines\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/06\/05\/fracking-doesnt-harm-drinking-water-epa\/\" target=\"_blank\">in the New York Post<\/a>\u00a0to get your information, the report actually provides support for New York\u2019s decision for a fracking\u00a0ban.<\/p>\n<p>New York now is the only state with known large amounts of shale deposits that has enacted a ban on fracking.
