I am not saying, right here anyway, that civilization as we know it will collapse, but I am asking the question: \u201cCan collapse be avoided?\u201d This post will deal with global warming and the associated climate change.<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Collapse-Post-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8370\" src=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Collapse-Post-2.jpg\" alt=\"Collapse Post 2\" width=\"724\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Right now CO2 is higher than it has been in over 20 million years. But it has been higher, a lot higher.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below was published in the Worldwatch Institute\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/State-World-2015-Confronting-Sustainability\/dp\/1610916107\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1434643429&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=confronting+hidden+threats+to+sustainability\">State of the World 2015<\/a>\u00a0and the source of their data was Goddard Institute for Space Studies<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Collapse-Post-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8267\" src=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Collapse-Post-11.jpg\" alt=\"Collapse Post 11\" width=\"659\" height=\"503\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What this chart clearly shows is that global warming, so far, is primarily a northern hemisphere\u00a0phenomenon and mostly above 60 degrees latitude.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stopglobalwarming.org\/news\/arctic-still-heating-up-twice-as-fast-as-rest-of-planet\/\">Arctic still heating up twice as fast as rest of planet<\/a>.\u00a0<em>Annual average temperatures have continued to rise for the region as a whole throughout the recent slowdown in the pace of warming globally, according to a new analysis of conditions above 60 degrees north latitude.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Collapse-Post-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8371\" src=\"http:\/\/peakoilbarrel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Collapse-Post-3.jpg\" alt=\"Collapse Post 3\" width=\"718\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/climate-impacts-of-nearly-ice-free-arctic-summers\/\">The ocean, especially the arctic ocean, is warming much faster than the atmosphere.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>In fact, the loss of reflective sea ice is part of the reason<strong>\u00a0Arctic temperature has risen\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007%2F978-94-007-2027-5_11?LI=true\">three times faster<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0than the global average in recent decades. This effect, known as Arctic amplification, has consequences for nearby land ice, too.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But why is the Northern \u00a0Well for one reason that\u2019s where most of the people are. That\u2019s where most of the CO2 emissions comes from.
