This is a major problem,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2015\/06\/24\/lake-mead-low-water-shortage\/29202475\/\">as USA Today reports,<\/a>\u00a0since Las Vegas water authority&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>current &#8220;straws&#8221; glean water from 1,050 feet and 1,000 feet &#8211; leaving the first straw just 25 feet away from pulling in air<\/strong>. With the drought only set to get worse as the summer begins, the water wars are just beginning as Lower-basin states are still\u00a0<strong>taking more than the river system can sustain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2015\/06-overflow\/20150626_mead1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"444\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bad and getting worse&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2015\/06-overflow\/20150626_mead.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2015\/06-overflow\/20150626_mead_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"462\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2015\/06\/24\/lake-mead-low-water-shortage\/29202475\/\"><em>As USA Today reports,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Lake Mead sunk to a record low Tuesday night, falling below the point that would trigger a water-supply shortage if the reservoir doesn&#8217;t recover soon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;in the long run, as a U.S. Bureau of Reclamation spokeswoman said,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;We still need a lot more water.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reservoir stores water for parts of Arizona, Southern California, southern Nevada and northern Mexico \u2014 all of which have endured a 15-year drought that continues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But Tuesday&#8217;s record low signals that Colorado River water users consume more than the river provides, said water-policy manager Drew Beckwith of the Western Resource Advocates, a nonprofit environmental law and policy organization.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the check-engine light,&#8221; Beckwith said.<strong>\u00a0&#8220;It really does (make critical) the fact that we have to start changing.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For Las Vegas, the record reinforces the need for a nearly $1.5 billion project to tap deeper into Lake Mead.<\/strong>\u00a0The Southern Nevada Water Authority soon will complete a 3-mile tunnel that will suck water from an 860-foot elevation level.
