In the first quarter, it earned\u00a0$387 compared to $412 million\u00a0for the same period in 2014. However, the industry it serves with its pipelines had a collective loss of more than $600 million over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>In an e-mail, TransCanada&#8217;s spokesman, Mark Cooper said the company\u00a0cut the positions as part of a\u00a0restructuring \u00a0to control\u00a0costs and remain competitive.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper said TransCanada\u00a0needs to provide\u00a0low-cost services as its customers have been deeply affected by the\u00a0current low-price environment that has left companies in the\u00a0oilpatch struggling.<\/p>\n<p>TransCanada is working to move forward on a number of projects,\u00a0including the Keystone XL Pipeline and the Energy East pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>Both projects have faced delays and regulatory hurdles.\u00a0The company has about 6,000 employees across North America.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"storytools\" class=\"wrap8 clearfix sclt-share\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TransCanada cuts 185 jobs as it restructures Pipeline company eliminates jobs to remain competitive and cut costs Keystone XL proponent\u00a0TransCanada Corp. has laid off 185\u00a0people in its major projects department, most of them in Calgary.
