Peak oiler? Not Catholic? You should still stand with the pope on climate\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n

I\u00a0get it, you believe in peak oil. So do I, despite gas at $2.50 a gallon. But peak oil is\u00a0no excuse for either you or me to just sit around waiting for the final oil crash to make the\u00a0climate problem moot by bringing down industrial civilization.<\/p>\n

Even if you\u2019re the world\u2019s biggest doomer, you have to admit that the timing is too uncertain \u2014 will the \u00fcber-crash come in five months or five decades? Nobody knows for sure.<\/p>\n

So far, the puppet masters of the world economy have been pretty good at keeping the party going longer than anybody had a right to expect. Who\u2019s to say that oil wars, extreme energy production and various accounting tricks\u00a0can\u2019t keep mass consumerism\u00a0running in many places\u00a0into the middle of the century or beyond?<\/p>\n

So don\u2019t hold your breath waiting for collapse. Instead, leave your cynicism behind and let Pope Francis inspire you to finally get serious about climate, a problem that we know is already here and whose future consequences will be unthinkable \u2014 unless the world seriously changes its ways, oil crash\u00a0or not.<\/p>\n

And if you do care about climate change, then what\u2019s not to like in the pope\u2019s\u00a0encyclical that came out this week?<\/p>\n

OK, well, maybe he could have been better about\u00a0recognizing overpopulation as part of the climate problem<\/a>. But he\u2019s right that it\u2019s hypocritical for rich countries to use climate as an excuse to pressure poor ones about population. All\u00a0poor countries put together have done almost nothing to warm the atmosphere compared to the real culprits, the rich nations of North America and Europe.<\/p>\n
