Hayden Mocks Extent of Post-Snowden Reform: “And this is it after two years? Cool!”<\/a><\/h3>\n

Former National Security Agency director Michael Hayden on Monday marveled at the puny nature of the surveillance reforms put in place two years after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed a vast expansion of intrusive U.S. government surveillance at home and abroad.<\/p>\n

Hayden mocked the loss of the one program that was reined in \u2014 the NSA\u2019s bulk collection of metadata information about domestic phone calls \u2014\u00a0calling it \u201cthat little 215 program.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he said if someone had told him two years ago that the only effect of the Snowden revelations would be losing it, his reaction would have been: \u201cCool!\u201d<\/p>\n

If somebody would come up to me and say \u201cLook, Hayden, here\u2019s the thing: This Snowden thing is going to be a nightmare for you guys for about two years. And when we get all done with it, what you\u2019re going to be required to do is that little 215 program about American telephony metadata \u2014 and by the way, you can still have access to it, but you got to go to the court and get access to it from the companies, rather than keep it to yourself\u201d \u2014 I go: \u201cAnd this is it after two years? Cool!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hayden was speaking at the\u00a0annual meeting<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Wall Street Journal\u00a0<\/em>CFO Network, an event hosted \u201cby the\u00a0Journal\u2019<\/em>s senior editors\u201d for \u201can invitation-only group of more than 100 chief financial officers of\u00a0the world\u2019s largest companies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked if he thought Snowden was a foreign agent, Hayden said: \u201cI\u2019ve got my suspicions,\u201d although he acknowledged, \u201cI\u2019ve got no evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n
