{"id":9145,"date":"2015-06-16T06:01:11","date_gmt":"2015-06-16T11:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9145"},"modified":"2015-06-16T06:01:11","modified_gmt":"2015-06-16T11:01:11","slug":"the-dark-side-of-the-shale-bust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9145","title":{"rendered":"The Dark Side Of The Shale Bust"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonsblog.com\/2015\/06\/the-dark-side-of-the-shale-bust.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Dark Side Of The Shale Bust<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The fallout of the collapse in oil prices has a lot of side effects apart from the decline of rig counts and oil flows.<\/p>\n<p>Oil\u00a0<a title=\"production\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/pet_crd_crpdn_adc_mbblpd_m.htm\" target=\"_blank\">production<\/a>\u00a0in North Dakota has exploded over the last five years, from negligible levels before 2010 to well over a million barrels per day, making North Dakota the second largest oil producing state in the country.<\/p>\n<p>But the bust is leaving towns like Williston, North Dakota stretched extremely thin as it tries to deal with the aftermath. Williston is coping\u00a0<a title=\"with $300 million in debt\" href=\"http:\/\/whqr.org\/post\/north-dakota-oil-town-it-bust-or-slowdown\" target=\"_blank\">with $300 million in debt<\/a>\u00a0after having leveraged itself to buildup infrastructure to deal with the swelling of people and equipment heading for the oil patch. Roads, schools, housing, water-treatment plants and more all cost the city a lot of money, expected to be paid off with revenues from oil production that are suddenly not flowing into local and state coffers the way they once were.<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b>Williams County Commissioner Dan Kalil says that a lot of unemployed people who flocked to North Dakota are left in the wake of the bust, something that the local government has to sort out. \u201cWe attracted everyone who had failed in Sacramento, everyone who failed in Phoenix, everyone who failed in Las Vegas, everybody who had failed in Houston, everyone who failed in Florida,\u201d Kalil said in a June 3 interview with\u00a0<a title=\"WHQR.org\" href=\"http:\/\/whqr.org\/post\/north-dakota-oil-town-it-bust-or-slowdown\" target=\"_blank\">WHQR.org<\/a>. \u201cAnd they all came here with unrealistic expectations. And it\u2019s really frustrating for those of us left to clean up the mess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Output is still only slightly off its\u00a0<a title=\"all-time high\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dmr.nd.gov\/oilgas\/stats\/historicaloilprodstats.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">all-time high<\/a>\u00a0of 1.2 million barrels per day, which it hit in December 2014.
