        This week the latest edition of the\u00a0BP Statistical Review of World Energy<\/a>noted two important trends.<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Renewables are still the fastest growing source of global energy<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          In 2014 global energy consumption growth fell to its lowest level since 1998: even better is that renewables made up 30% of that growth. While this is positive, the scale of the challenge can\u2019t be underestimated: BP\u2019s report shows that renewables still contribute just 3% of global primary energy.<\/p>\n

          Indeed, a new report from the IEA this week called for\u00a0more policy support<\/a>\u00a0for the sector because the current rate of progress is not fast enough to meet the 2\u00b0C climate target. For the same reason, a group of scientists and economists led by Sir David King, former chief scientific advisor to the UK government, called for an\u00a0Apollo-style mission<\/a>\u00a0to make renewable power cheaper than coal within a decade.<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Global greenhouse gas emissions growth has slowed to 0.5%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            However, the emissions figures aren\u2019t as positive as the IEA\u2019s\u00a0preliminary estimates<\/a>\u00a0which showed 2014 emissions stalling at 2013 levels. While it\u2019s encouraging to see emissions growth starting to slow, we mustn\u2019t forget that what we really need is a rapid\u00a0decrease<\/em>\u00a0overall.<\/p>\n
