{"id":9010,"date":"2015-06-11T07:07:39","date_gmt":"2015-06-11T12:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9010"},"modified":"2015-06-11T07:07:39","modified_gmt":"2015-06-11T12:07:39","slug":"more-industry-linked-earthquakes-recorded-in-alberta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=9010","title":{"rendered":"More Industry Linked Earthquakes Recorded in Alberta"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2015\/06\/11\/More-Fracking-Earthquakes\/\" target=\"_blank\">More Industry Linked Earthquakes Recorded in Alberta<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"tagline\"><strong>New seismic reporting system &#8216;a good start&#8217; but &#8216;not foolproof,&#8217; says hazard expert.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"first\">More industry-linked earthquakes have shaken up Alberta&#8217;s oil and gas fields in recent weeks from Fox Creek to Peace River,\u00a0say experts and regulators.<\/p>\n<p>In Fox Creek, Alberta, where industry\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2015\/01\/29\/Alberta-Fracking-Earthquake\/\" target=\"_blank\">triggered<\/a>\u00a0a 4.4 magnitude earthquake, a company fracking in the Duvernay Formation has reported more tremors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On May 28, an operator in the Fox Creek area reported two seismic events, of a magnitude 2.2 and 2.1 respectively,&#8221; confirmed Ryan Bartlett, a spokesperson for the Alberta Energy Regulator.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The events were associated with hydraulic fracturing operations,&#8221; said Bartlett, &#8220;and were reported to the [regulator] as required by Subsurface Order #2,&#8221; a new set of regulations to monitor seismicity set up last February.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a shallow 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred near Rocky Mountain House in central Alberta where a history of quick and high-volume gas extraction from the Strachan gas pool\u00a0has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/petroexplorers.com\/pb\/wp_c757ed4b\/Baranova_induced_seismicity_Jan_1999_CJES.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">triggered<\/a>\u00a0swarms of tremors since 1976.<\/p>\n<p>Gail Atkinson, one of Canada&#8217;s foremost experts on earthquake hazards, said the June 2 event near Rocky Mountain House &#8220;appears likely to have been triggered by hydraulic fracture operations nearby, though the details of those operations are not yet available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fracking of tight oil formations along the Rocky Mountains, says a recent industry\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgsolutions.com\/sites\/esgsolutions.com\/files\/optimizing_completions_in_the_western_canadian_sedimentary_basin.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">case study<\/a>,\u00a0can divert fracking fluids into faults with the risk of &#8220;generating induced seismicity of large enough magnitude to be felt at the surface.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Just northeast of the town of Peace River, residents recently heard a loud boom as two earthquakes shook an area where industry extracts bitumen by injecting steam into the ground.
