Of course, he didn\u2019t word it exactly like that, but close enough:<\/p>\n<p>BRENNAN: I think the president has tried to make sure that we\u2019re able to push the envelope when we can to protect this country. But we have to recognize that sometimes our engagement and direct involvement will stimulate and spur additional threats to our national security interests.<\/p>\n<p>This is notable because the people who run our foreign policy usually\u00a0tell us that\u00a0terrorists are like zombies, driven\u00a0by some incomprehensible\u00a0force to kill and kill and kill until we take them out with a head shot\/drone strike. Brennan himself did this five years ago while \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/briefing-homeland-security-secretary-napolitano-assistant-president-counterterroris\">answering<\/a>\u201d questions from the late reporter Helen Thomas about\u00a0Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the\u00a023-year-old Nigerian man\u00a0who tried to blow up a\u00a0Northwest\u00a0flight over Detroit:<\/p>\n<p>THOMAS:\u00a0And what is the motivation? We never hear what you find out on why.<\/p>\n<p>BRENNAN:\u00a0Al Qaeda is an organization that is dedicated to murder and wanton slaughter of innocents \u2026<\/p>\n<p>THOMAS:\u00a0Why?<\/p>\n<p>BRENDAN:\u00a0I think this is a \u2014 this is a long issue, but al Qaeda is just determined to carry out attacks here against the homeland.<\/p>\n<p>The next year Abdulmutallab\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.freep.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20111012\/NEWS01\/111012038\/&amp;template=artiphone\">explained<\/a>\u00a0at his sentencing what had motivated him:<\/p>\n<p>I [attempted] to attack the United States in retaliation for U.S. support of Israel and in retaliation of the killing of innocent and civilian Muslim populations in Palestine, especially in the blockade of Gaza, and in retaliation for the killing of innocent and civilian Muslim populations in Yemen, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan and beyond, most of them women, children, and noncombatants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CIA Director John Brennan Admits U.S. Foreign Policy Could Spur Terrorism John Brennan, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, went on \u201cFace the Nation\u201d last Sunday and did something weird: he\u00a0acknowledged\u00a0that U.S. foreign policy might sometimes cause terrorism.
