{"id":8880,"date":"2015-06-06T09:21:39","date_gmt":"2015-06-06T14:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8880"},"modified":"2015-06-06T09:21:39","modified_gmt":"2015-06-06T14:21:39","slug":"difficult-to-invest-in-green-energy-in-canada-without-big-oil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8880","title":{"rendered":"Difficult to invest in green energy in Canada without Big Oil"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-headline\">\n<h3 class=\"story-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/difficult-to-invest-in-green-energy-in-canada-without-big-oil-1.3100233\" target=\"_blank\">Difficult to invest in green energy in Canada without Big Oil<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"story-deck\"><strong>Divestiture movement continues as organizations clean carbon holdings from portfolios<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you thought the divestiture movement was losing steam,\u00a0Norway&#8217;s recent announcement\u00a0shows there still is momentum around the world to\u00a0stop investing in fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The country has confirmed that its hefty\u00a0$900-billion\u00a0government pension fund, considered the\u00a0largest\u00a0sovereign\u00a0wealth fund\u00a0in the world, will\u00a0purge some of its\u00a0fossil fuel stocks.<\/p>\n<p>Many other organizations have made similar moves in past years.<\/p>\n<p>Concordia University in Montreal launched a\u00a0$5-million fund\u00a0dedicated to divestment, social and ethical investing. Stanford University in California\u00a0pledged not to make direct investments in companies whose principal business is coal for energy.\u00a0The Rockefeller Brothers Fund pledged to reduce investments in coal and the oilsands projects to less than one per cent\u00a0of its portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>But in Canada, divestiture\u00a0may not be the best method of promoting renewable energy development.<\/p>\n<div class=\"figure col4width floatright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.3063374.1430926879!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.JPG_gen\/derivatives\/original_300\/syncrude-oil-sands-site-near-fort-mcmurray.JPG\" alt=\"Syncrude oil sands site near Fort McMurray\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">Traditional oil, gas and coal companies are creating the majority of renewable energy in Alberta. It&#8217;s a\u00a0leader in renewable energy development and uses fossil fuels too. The Edmonton-based company has more than 20 wind and solar power plants in North America.
