{"id":8850,"date":"2015-06-05T06:34:46","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T11:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8850"},"modified":"2015-06-05T06:34:46","modified_gmt":"2015-06-05T11:34:46","slug":"biometric-data-collection-evolves-and-expands-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8850","title":{"rendered":"Biometric data collection evolves and expands in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-headline\">\n<h3 class=\"story-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/biometric-data-collection-evolves-and-expands-in-canada-1.3100872\" target=\"_blank\">Biometric data collection evolves and expands in Canada<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"story-deck\"><strong>Ottawa wants to collect data from visitors of 150 countries, up from the current 30<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The federal government&#8217;s\u00a0plan\u00a0to increase its collection of\u00a0biometric data from visitors\u00a0to Canada\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/biometric-data-collection-change-in-budget-bill-raises-privacy-concerns-1.3095488\">has\u00a0been met with concern<\/a>, but the practice is\u00a0already a large part of our day-to-day lives.<\/p>\n<p>Biometrics measure a\u00a0person&#8217;s unique physiological characteristics\u00a0\u2014 including\u00a0face,\u00a0iris,\u00a0retinal veins,\u00a0fingerprints, voice and hand geometry\u00a0\u2014 to verify identity.<\/p>\n<p>Citizenship and Immigration Canada\u00a0told CBC News that digital photos and fingerprints are &#8220;the only biometrics data applicants will have to provide&#8221; under the government&#8217;s plan for expanded collection of data. Visitors will have to pay $85 to cover the cost of data collection.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some ways that biometrics already touch our lives.<\/p>\n<h2>How it works now<\/h2>\n<p>The government currently collects the\u00a0biometric\u00a0data of\u00a0foreign nationals from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cic.gc.ca\/english\/visit\/biometrics.asp\">29 countries and one territory<\/a>.\u00a0For an $85 fee, a visitor&#8217;s fingers are scanned on a glass screen and their digital photo is taken. Exemptions include those\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cic.gc.ca\/english\/visit\/biometrics.asp\">under 14\u00a0or over\u00a080 years of age<\/a>, as well as diplomats.<\/p>\n<p>New regulations expected\u00a0by 2018-19 would expand screening to include visitors from about 150 more countries, including those\u00a0visitors who need visas, work or study permits. Americans are exempt.<\/p>\n<h2>Move to biometrics launched in 2008<\/h2>\n<p>The government first announced it was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/biometric-scanning-for-immigrants-coming-ministry-1.1068237\">moving to biometrics in 2008<\/a>\u00a0because they are more\u00a0reliable than the use of subjective photo identification.<\/p>\n<p>The 2008 budget said, &#8220;Border security remains a priority for Canadians.
