{"id":8844,"date":"2015-06-05T06:22:03","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T11:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8844"},"modified":"2015-06-05T06:22:03","modified_gmt":"2015-06-05T11:22:03","slug":"epa-study-fracking-puts-drinking-water-supplies-at-risk-of-contamination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8844","title":{"rendered":"EPA Study: Fracking Puts Drinking Water Supplies at Risk of Contamination"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-field-bimage field-type-image field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/06\/04\/epa-study-fracking-contaminates-water-supplies\" target=\"_blank\">EPA Study: Fracking Puts Drinking Water Supplies at Risk of Contamination<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/blog_teaser\/public\/blogimages\/shutterstock_185522261.jpg?itok=rb4LU687\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"128\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>The Environmental Protection Agency has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.epa.gov\/hfstudy\" target=\"_blank\">released<\/a>\u00a0its long awaited draft assessment of the impacts that fracking has on the nation&#8217;s drinking water supplies \u2014 confirming that the process does indeed contaminate\u00a0water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom our assessment, we conclude there are above and below ground mechanisms by which hydraulic fracturing activities have the potential to impact drinking water resources,\u201d the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>\u00a0wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The impacts take a variety of forms, the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>\u00a0wrote, listing the effects of water consumption especially in arid regions or during droughts, chemical and wastewater spills, \u201cfracturing directly into underground drinking water resources,\u201d the movement of liquids and gasses below ground \u201cand inadequate treatment and discharge of\u00a0wastewater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agency wrote that it had documented \u201cspecific instances\u201d where each of those problems had in fact happened and some cases where multiple problems combined to pollute water\u00a0supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental groups welcomed the agency&#8217;s central conclusion as\u00a0vindication.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Today\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>\u00a0confirmed what communities living with fracking have known for years,\u201d said Earthworks policy director Lauren Pagel. \u201cFracking pollutes drinking\u00a0water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But they also cautioned that the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>&#8216;s assessment seemed likely to understate the risks associated with fracking, in part because it relied heavily on data that was self-reported by the drilling\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n<p>So, just how badly has the process contaminated America&#8217;s water already, and how big are the risks from more fracking?
