(And, how local?),\u201d Heinberg\u00a0writes in his latest book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0865717885\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0865717885&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=transitionvoice-20&amp;linkId=5RU7TH4NN7XQN7EH\">Afterburn: Society Beyond Fossil Fuels<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not what\u2019s new in this collection of Heinberg\u2019s essays. Anyone following the Transition movement has been hearing for nearly a decade that more active local economies are\u00a0the inevitable future once the triple threat of climate change, peak oil and economic crisis topples\u00a0global industrial capitalism as we know it.\u00a0The message came through loud and clear in 2008 with\u00a0<em>The Transition Handbook<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/transitionvoice.com\/2011\/11\/from-totnes-with-love\/\">Rob Hopkins<\/a>\u00a0and the world\u2019s local future has been a core tenet of Transition ever since.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s new about\u00a0<em>Afterburn<\/em>\u00a0is that it offers two things that Transitioners or anyone else who forecasts a more local future\u00a0needs today: inspiration and advice for the future that\u2019s better than most of what you\u2019ll read elsewhere.<\/p>\n<h3>Inspiration<\/h3>\n<p>These days, with gas prices hovering around $2.50 a gallon and all the talk about cheap gas from fracking, if you still care about peak oil, then you\u2019re going to be pretty lonely.
