{"id":8652,"date":"2015-05-31T07:43:53","date_gmt":"2015-05-31T12:43:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8652"},"modified":"2015-05-31T07:43:53","modified_gmt":"2015-05-31T12:43:53","slug":"the-california-water-shortage-a-case-for-aesthetic-ecosystem-and-ecological-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8652","title":{"rendered":"The California Water Shortage: A Case for Aesthetic Ecosystem and Ecological Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/aestheticecosystems.com\/california-water-shortage\/\" target=\"_blank\">The California Water Shortage: A Case for Aesthetic Ecosystem and Ecological Design<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aestheticecosystems.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/California-Reservoir-Flickr-Rene-Passet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11543\" src=\"http:\/\/aestheticecosystems.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/California-Reservoir-Flickr-Rene-Passet.jpg\" alt=\"California reservoir drought\" width=\"448\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A reservoir showing the effect of drought conditions in California<\/p>\n<p>In recent news, there has been significant coverage of California\u2019s struggle with its below average precipitation in the past several years.\u00a0 Yes, they call it a drought.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Jerry Brown and California State Water Resources Control Board have come forward with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/regulators-california-fell-far-short-water-saving-target-174213661.html\">restrictions on water use<\/a>, primarily in urban and suburban areas.<\/p>\n<p>People are ripping up lawns.<\/p>\n<p>Landscape designers are drooling (not too much) over the opportunity to redesign so many areas for better water conservation.\u00a0 Many are replacing lawns with cookie-cutter designed \u2018xeriscapes\u2019 or \u2018desertscapes\u2019 such as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.modesto-landscapes.co.uk\/ussite\/Gal_Sherwood.html\">this one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Urbanites are pitted against agrarians saying the other is more responsible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/04\/27\/402632444\/california-cemeteries-adapt-to-water-restrictions-to-avoid-going-dry\">One recent interview on NPR<\/a>\u00a0highlights cemetery caretakers wondering \u201cif cemeteries, particularly for veterans, shouldn\u2019t play by different rules than, say, a suburban lawn\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>And now, there\u2019s a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/news\/2015\/03\/31\/ebmud-blames-drought-for-pungent-taste-of-tap-water\">struggle between allowing salmon to spawn and the ability of Bay area residents<\/a>\u00a0to drink water that doesn\u2019t taste funky.<\/p>\n<p>This is where I follow up with saying, \u2018The end is near!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>OK so perhaps I\u2019m making light of the situation a bit.\u00a0 This is a serious situation.\u00a0 But we have gotten ourselves into this mess.\u00a0 We have been deliberately diminishing our water resources in the western US for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just that the thought of water scarcity is a bit more evident now.<\/p>\n<p>The good news?\u00a0 We\u2019ve gotten ourselves into this mess, and we can get ourselves out.\u00a0 But it won\u2019t be easy and it won\u2019t be painless.\u00a0 Those in California are already beginning to feel the pain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The California Water Shortage: A Case for Aesthetic Ecosystem and Ecological Design A reservoir showing the effect of drought conditions in California In recent news, there has been significant coverage of California\u2019s struggle with its below average precipitation in the past several years.\u00a0 Yes, they call it a drought.
