{"id":8565,"date":"2015-05-28T19:34:51","date_gmt":"2015-05-29T00:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8565"},"modified":"2015-05-28T19:34:51","modified_gmt":"2015-05-29T00:34:51","slug":"no-climate-protection-without-climate-justice-no-climate-justice-without-degrowth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8565","title":{"rendered":"No Climate Protection without Climate Justice; No Climate Justice without Degrowth"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.degrowth.de\/en\/2015\/05\/no-climate-protection-without-climate-justice-no-climate-justice-without-degrowth\/\">No Climate Protection without Climate Justice; No Climate Justice without Degrowth<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Shortly before the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.degrowth.de\/en\/2015\/04\/2015-the-year-for-climate-justice-and-degrowth\/\" target=\"_blank\">most crucial UN climate change conference<\/a>\u00a0after the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2009\/dec\/18\/copenhagen-deal\" target=\"_blank\">failure of Copenhagen<\/a>, it seems that the international climate-movement is finally getting its act together: resistance against fossil fuel extraction is gaining ground and a rising global movement is putting pressure on institutions to divest their money from fossil fuels to finance renewables instead. Green jobs in the renewable energy sector have been a success story and it is broadly accepted that we need to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.unfccc.int\/unfccc-newsroom\/most-fossil-fuels-must-stay-in-the-ground-new-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">keep 80% of the known fossil fuel reserves in the ground<\/a>\u00a0if we want to prevent runaway climate change.\u00a0<span id=\"more-155260\"><\/span>Last year, more than\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/09\/21\/peoples-climate-march_n_5857902.html\" target=\"_blank\">400 000 people flooded the streets of New York City<\/a>\u00a0in the largest climate march in history and, as the global development of renewable energy increases in scale and efficiency, people are starting to believe in a transition away from fossil fuel dependency.<\/p>\n<p>This is of course good news, and nobody concerned about climate change would seriously doubt that the global transition towards renewable energy is an absolute necessity. However, much as right-wing conservatives, mostly in the US, deny anthropogenic climate change, the majority of the climate movement tends to deny an equally important issue: that renewables are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/de\/book\/9781402055485\" target=\"_blank\">unable to maintain our Western growth-based consumer lifestyles<\/a>\u00a0on a global level.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cRenewable\u201d does not equal \u201cunlimited\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.degrowth.de\/en\/2015\/02\/renewables-cannot-sustain-the-globalized-growth-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\">limitations and environmental impacts of renewables<\/a>\u00a0are being discussed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.postcarbon.org\/our-renewable-future-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\">in breadth and depth elsewhere<\/a>; suffice to say here that e.g. wind mills and solar panels are very energy-intensive in production \u2013 and intensive in other natural resources too, such as metals, minerals and rare earths. Windmills for example require lots of concrete which is a highly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ei.columbia.edu\/2012\/05\/09\/emissions-from-the-cement-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\">CO2 intensive industry<\/a>.
