Fukushima May Be At Risk Of Imminent “Hydrogen Explosion”<\/a><\/h3>\n

Containers holding contaminated water at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant are at risk of hydrogen explosions<\/strong>,\u00a0The Telegraph reports<\/a>, with 10% of them found to be leaking. The discovery was reported to the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), which raised concerns surrounding the potential hazards of accumulated hydrogen building up in the containers warning that\u00a0“a spark caused by static electricity could cause a container to explode.”<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0TEPCO officials reassuringly note that they “think the possibility of an occurrence of hydrogen explosion from these storage facilities is extremely low, since there is no fire origin, or anything that generates static electricity nearby,” but this is the same company that a recent\u00a0IAEA report blasted for\u00a0“failing to implement adequate safeguards at Fukushima \u2013 despite being aware of the tsunami risk.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Almost 10 per cent of recently inspected containers holding contaminated water at the nuclear plant in northeast Japan were found to be leaking radioactive water.<\/strong><\/div>\n

The leakages, discovered during inspections by Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco), the operators of the plant, were thought to be caused by a build-up of hydrogen and other gases due to radiation contamination.<\/p>\n

The discovery was reported to the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), which raised concerns surrounding the potential hazards of accumulated hydrogen building up in the containers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the concentration level is high, a spark caused by static electricity could cause a container to explode,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0one NRA official told the Asahi Shimbun.<\/p>\n

Tepco officials made the discovery while inspecting 278 of the plant\u2019s 1,307 containers and\u00a0found that 26 \u2013 close to ten per cent – had a leakage or overspill from their lids.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is believed that\u00a0gases had accumulated in the sediment at the base of the containers<\/strong>, prompting the volume of the liquid to expand and resulting in the overflow.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
