Researchers Predicted In 1971 that Debit Cards Would Become the Ultimate Spy Tool<\/a><\/h3>\n

We\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0in 2013:<\/p>\n

The Wall Street Journal reported that the NSA spies on Americans\u2019\u00a0credit card transactions<\/a>. Senators Wyden and Udall \u2013 both on the Senate Intelligence Committee, with access to all of the top-secret information about the government\u2019s spying programs \u2013\u00a0write<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Section 215 of the Patriot Act can be used to collect any type of records whatsoever \u2026 including information on\u00a0credit card purchases, medical records, library records, firearm sales records, financial information and a range of other sensitive subjects<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Many other government agencies\u00a0track your credit card purchases as well<\/a>. In fact,\u00a0all<\/strong><\/em>U.S. intelligence agencies \u2013 including the CIA and NSA \u2013\u00a0are going to spy on Americans\u2019 finances<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The IRS will be spying on Americans\u2019\u00a0shopping records, travel, social interactions, health records and files<\/a>\u00a0from other government investigators.<\/p>\n

The Consumer Financial Protection Board will also\u00a0spy on the finances of millions of Americans<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Various agencies are also tracking our debit card transactions.<\/p>\n

Indeed, as Gizmodo\u2019s Matt Novak notes, researchers\u00a0predicted this in 1971<\/a>:<\/p>\n

In late October of 1971 a group of academics and technologists gathered at a conference at Georgetown. They were given the task of devising\u00a0the most comprehensive (yet invisible) surveillance program imaginable<\/strong>. What they came up with sounds an awful lot like our current debit card system.<\/p>\n

This was the question posed to the researchers in 1971:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
